trapical
A year or so ago there were massive posts and debates on the PSP vs the DS, but as of late I havent heard a thing about the PSP. I saw a pop up banner saying "free PSP if you hit the clown" and it reminded me that the PSP even excists, all my friends have a DS. Does anyone have any idea how the sales are doing globaly? Did the DS or PSP officially win the battle?
cjlhdevil
Oh god now it starts again, Anything games console debate is going to end in this being locked. I think DS outsold PSP in japan by a long long way but rest of world PSP outsold DS, I have tried both and i'd rather play my GBA SP than the DS, PSP for me has been for more outstanding graphics, games and movie wise. trapical
Yea, let me clarify just in case; I'm not looking for opinions on why the other system is horrible, etc. I'm just curious as to what the facts regarding sales are
vladmoney
in US its all PSP, mainly because US is major sony fan, and because of the big screen and the ability to play movies attracts many users. The graphics are amazing, i dont have one but i know people who have. And the fact that u can mod it, and go on the internet is big for some people. Its really easy to use too. I know a person who sits by me in study hall plays PSP with his friend everyday, who sits all the way across the room. I must say it gives a good first impression, and I think thats why they have sold more in the US. Bubsa
I think it depends on what people want. If people want a better games console, they get the DS. If they want a good games console which can do all other nifty stuff, they go for the PSP. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you. Ruzbeh
In Japan, DS is leading big-time. It's doing enormously well. It's sold ~3.4 million, while PSP has sold ~1.8 million. In the US, the DS is leading as well by approx. 200,000 units (I expect this gap to grow bigger). In the US, the DS is leading with ~2 million units, the PSP is at ~1.8 million units. The PSP is doing a lot better than I thought in the US. I don't have any numbers for you in Europe, but the DS is leading there as well. I'm thinking the PSP is doing well in Europe, just like the US, except it's being sort of held back due to shortages (Sony tries, but, apparently, not hard enough). The numbers I gave you are very recent. Also, the PSP hasn't sold that well in September (last month) in the US, disappointing numbers. I should note, Nintendogs were released for Nintendo DS in late-August in the US... In Japan, PSP was leading (not overal sales, it was catching up to DS sales quickly) until... Nintendogs were released. Ever since, DS sales has been extremely good. Nintendogs is the first real killer-app for DS, it has a massive appeal and it's selling very well in all territories. DS is leading in terms of world-wide sales, I don't expect this to change anytime soon. In five years from now, I expect the DS to be leading in overal sales. The one, main advantage the DS has over the PSP is cost. The success of the GBA was thanks to it's price (sub-$100).
RebelAssassin
in and around Southampton ive seen countless PSPs and not 1 DS. And overall in europe i would say the PSP has out sold the DS (i havnt got any figures, im assuming) when GTA:LCS comes out it will outsell nintendogs in the US and Europe, i can garentee it to you www.PETAkillsanimals.com

Queballz
Who really cares about the sales lol but i would say the DS and PSP came up pretty close because the DS touch screen feature was very "nifty" and the PSP, though having a pixel malfunction, did have some amazing games. I didnt care for the DS ive seen bout 2 round here but the PSP is all around me. Really i would pick PSP cause the DS reminds me of a sega gamegear lol
Ruzbeh
Who really cares about the sales lol Who cares about sales? Well, it says a lot of things. For example, if a certain product is selling very good, like the DS, you can expect a continuation/sequel to the product in the future (enhanced DS, like GBA and GBA SP, or a new DS in a few years from now). It also tells you how well the product will be supported by third parties. Now, if the DS was selling a lot worse than it is now, and PSP would be leading the way, there would be more third party support for the PSP, and not for DS (and since it is DS that is selling best, it has the most third party support, surprise surprise). As for software sales, it tells you a lot as well. For example, if Okami (PS2), a new game by Capcom (Clover Studios) that's yet to be released, sells very bad, they will forget about developing a sequel. If it sells extremely well, on the other hand, it will be likely that they will create a sequel for it on the PS3 or something. If Okami would have been a multiplatform title and would appear on both Gamecube and PS2, and if it turns out to sell a lot worse on Gamecube than on PS2, they'll forget about releasing the sequel on the Gamecube (or Revolution). Mr_Putter
DS is leading in terms of world-wide sales, I don't expect this to change anytime soon. I'd say the contrary. With PSP's Killer App coming out a week from Tuesday, I bet that PSP sales are going to go up exponentially. GTA games have always done alright in Japan, but extremely well in North America. I can't really say how many people are getting PSP's just for this game, but I'm betting on a lot. Then they'll tell friends...And so on.

What's really holding the PSP back from exploding in terms of sales is the price. You'd think a lot of people would get PSPs just to play GTA (I like GTA, personally), but they will say "no" to the $250 pricetag. GTA:LCS will cost $50, so that's basically $300 to play a game based on an extremely popular franchise. It's also possible that constumers perceive LCS as an updated GTAIII and not as something new (it doesn't have a new style like Vice City and San Andreas). But it will very likely be the best-selling PSP game, and will definately drive up sales of the PSP for a while.
weezcake
I always thought that the DS did horrible in the US. I only know two people who have bought a DS. Ruzbeh
Oh no, make no mistake, it is doing horrible in the US, in my opinion. It was released back in 2004, November 21st, yeah? Yup. Took so many months just to get to 2 million. Nintendo of America needed Nintendogs very badly. In a few weeks (14 November), Mario Kart DS, Nintendo's first online game, will be released, along with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. I'm thinking it will give Nintendo DS that little extra boost to keep it going strong and keep it away from the clutches of Sony's PSP.

unknownmasterofnothing
I thought it was about equal in sales. But currently the main line up for the nintendo ds is coming up with the wifi connections, mariokart ds, castlevania ds, sonic rush, etc.. Right now PSP games are lacking variety and in general. But they've gotten a firmware upgrade I think that made things better like web browsing access.

Ruzbeh
Sales in the UK, last week: Nintendo DS - 24,492 PSP - 18,723 GBA SP - 8,799 Looks like the Nintendogs had a good effect, to say the least. :P
Ianbur
Hmm.. I thought that DS was much father ahead in the US. I'd expect the PSP to beat it in terms of sales worldwide...
Ruzbeh
I'd expect the PSP to beat it in terms of sales worldwide... Knowing what I know now, I don't think that will happen anytime soon. Someone disastrous will have to happen to the DS if the PSP beats it world-wide.
Exarch
Just an important tidbit regarding the DS: October 17, 2005 - Nintendo of America on Tuesday will announce a groundbreaking partnership with Wi-Fi provider Wayport to make available free Internet access to DS owners at McDonald's restaurants across the nation. Nintendo and Wayport will offer complimentary Wi-Fi hotspots at McDonald's establishments, enabling DS owners to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which launches November 14 in the states, to play online games with or against each other. Bubsa
What the hell? McDonalds tries to make out how they're all healthy eating nowadays and then makes this promotion, basically giving people a reason to sit on their arse, eat their food and go online. Ridiculous, it shouldn't be allowed. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
trapical
*whistles* Ingenious marketing move. McDonnalds will gladly foot the bill for the WiFi since there will be kids wanting to go there to play and Nintendo gets a massive bonus. Now they can say you can play wirelessly in everytown... what does almost every town have? A McDonnalds!. Lol, brilliant. Sucks for PSP.
indy500fan
Ridiculous, it shouldn't be allowed. yeah, i agree. we should have somebody who is smarter than everyone else tell us exactly what we should eat, and be punished if we dont. we should also have someone punish us if we decide to play games rather than work out in the fields. i mean, really, if someone wants to go eat at mcdonalds, let them, its not your choice. i personally cant stand the place and have been mcdonalds free for around 3 years.
