Kemios flies onto the roof of his castle, and starts building a trebuchet using earth magic.

You ride on your cold-fire stallion eastward, where you see a mighty battle raging. The Lichtens appears to be trapped on Jen's mountain, surrounded by legions of undead.

You have a strange feeling that the nice Lich has turned evil after acquiring the white elm staff of Necromancy from Grim. When you reach his lair, there doesn't seem to be anything there.

You continue charging.

You manage to summon five skeletons, though they seem rather weak. The incline seems to go on for quite a long while, and you make it half way up.

You quickly learn that most light magic is already rather pure, and that it would be too hard to mimic at the current level. The staff seems rather easy to use, though it has charges which recharges over time (recharges automatically).

The cloaked figure heads up the stairs of the tavern into its room, and beckons you to come.

Your limbs seem rather fine now that Iey healed you. When you scavenge through the corpses, you find one of the people still living. The figure seems to be of a male around the age of thirty, with a small logo emblazoned on his robe, one that you recognize comes from the Ivory tower.

You make the handy dandy frames of a trebuchet, though it seems to require some people to run it.

i keep climbing, while pulling out my bow, and trying to make bows out of necro energy for my skeletons.

I call Iey over to heal him, and help him to his feet. I ask him if he knows what's going on outside, and why he's here.

Grim uses his geomancy charge to smash the reserves of the liches and attempts to hit one of the lesser liches with a beam of compressed abyssal fire.

Igos searches the lair for any manuscripts on details for becoming a litch.

(paul, level 20 necro. although, with your artifact, you may become one at level 3. damn you, i wanted to become a litch with that.)

Kemios digs up his stock of bones, and tries to animate a few skeletons to help him run the trebuchet.

New stave in hand, I try to figure out how to activate the charges within and what to expect when I do. While doing that I notice Nex's discovery. I do not offer to heal him as I do not yet know if he is friend or foe.

Right, I suppose you wouldn't. The Ivory Mages are... were.... some of the most powerful good mages in the game. They were destroyed by Golemzilla.

(ah, ok. Well I change my secondary action to healing him before toying with the stave. Earth, even if my blessing wont work on you my inflictions on the enemy will make it as though you were casting acid on a normal target)

You tumble back to the bottom of the incline, and knock yourself out.

The figure doesn't seem able to talk without healing.

You manage to smash a few dozen skeletons, but it barely dents the enemy forces. The enemy Liches seem to blend in with the hoard, making it hard to target them. You miss horrendously and the hellfire burns into the mountain.

One of the passages in the lair's massive collection of books jump out at you.

 

"...and in a time of great strife and upheaval, the boundaries between the living and the dead are often blurred. This makes becoming a Lich that much easier, but often travelling to a land where the dead are more common than the living is the key. Then one must perform a ritual with an artifact of necromantic ability and a willing human sacrifice."

The figure whispers in your ear, before disappearing in a flash of smoke. A red gem and a bag of silver dust falls to the floor.

 

"Place this gem beneath the sun tower of Ikana, and sprinkle the silver dust in a counter clockwise circular pattern around it. After you have done that, the bartender will give you the reward."

You manage to make a crew of skeletons, enough to operate the trebuchet.

A bit of knowledge jumps out at you from the back of your mind.

 

"In order to activate a magical staff, it is often necessary to point it at the intended target and push in some relevant magical energy, to jumpstart the reaction."

 

You have the idea of asking Nex what the staff does.

Kemios walks a good distance outside the city - a.k.a into the middle of nowhere - and tries to create a sonic bomb with sound magic, earth magic, and transmog.

 

And no necro xp for the skeleton crew? Darn.

Grim fires beams of compressed abyssal fire into the greatest enemy troop concentrations. He then charges a geomancy spell.

i try to wake up. (ffs.)

Igos returns to Ikana, telling Rocco to stop. He asks an Ivory mage to take a look at the substance. If this doesn't work, he gathers the dust and takes the gem from around the sun tower.

Walking over to heal the injured man, I let the first words to my new found friends flow from my lips ever so gently "May I ask you what this stave is capable of?"

Almost as an afterthought, I realise how rude I have been "Oh, My apologies, we weren't introduced properly. I am Maj'la'Tairn, daughter of the Lunar Tribe. May I ask your name?"

You begin making a bomb and test it. It fizzles out, unsurprisingly, because you have no bomb making experience or knowledge.

A great flood sweeps through the area and begins washing you away, along with the rest of the undead army. The Lichten leader seems to be casting a powerful spell.

You encounter Rocco and tell him to stop.

You manage to heal the injured man substantially, though he seems rather drained from lying there so long.

The man sits up and recounts his story.

 

"Back in the day, I was one of the Ivory mage apprentices, studying necromancy and darkness magicks. I stumbled upon this tunnel complex, apparantly created by some adventurer. I thought it was the perfect place to practice and do experiments, so in I went. One day I encountered several ghouls, which I readily dispatch. I quickly realized that the adventurer had opened one of the sealed portals to the land of the dead, by accident or on purpose. I moved to seal the portal once more, but a giant spider overtook me and here I am today.

 

Can you tell me what it happening in the world outside?"
