I'm not the only one to think of it though, so I guess great minds think alike

I've been wanting to test this out for awhile and well... with just a pin[puncture] for a half second I could probably get a very powerful attack out of it.

I don't think entering it would cause a devastating attack.

Facing away from me. While the plane of shadow was just shadows I would think that the fire plane would be a raging inferno. So if I were to open even a small hole odds are a blast of fire would emerge hopefully far more powerful than what I would be capable of before.

Well the shadow didn't leak out of the shadow realm, so who's to say the fire will.

No, but think of it:

A mage creates a tiny portal to, say, the center of the sun. He then creates shielding going in a line between him and the enemy, the exact diameter of the portal. Because of the intense raw heat and radiation, anything in the path of the attack would be destroyed.

 

Think of it as a kind of... dimensional revolver.

That reminds me nex while your analogy is correct a simpler one would be this: if you have ever watched bleach (or read the manga) then you should know what a cero is. Imagine my new attack as a beefed up cero on steroids.

I tried to do a cero in this game, still not high enough level :/

When did you try that? anyways with a little luck I can create a portal to the plane of fire and well hopefully it won't end up as a blast that obliterates everything in a 1/2 mile going 120 degrees from the point of entrance (because then I could not use it against anything except armies and it would probably bring down the roof of a dungeon)

Hmm that would take a much higher level. On a note to retech I am not sure how effective a gate to the plane of ice would be.

Maybe I could open a portal to the plane of water and flood the entire place. Or maybe the plane of ice and unleash a fearsome blizzard (and maybe some vicious creatures? :D)

We still dont know if the magic leaks out of the portal.

Well there could be two types of portals one that lets physical magically present beings pass through that requires far less energy and another that would require a level of 10+ simply to open it up to the size of a fist for 1 second that lets the magical force come through.
