5gb internet

Featured Replies

So, for the past few years, i've been on dialup. Recently we've discovered that we can get highspeed, but there's a catch: Theres a 5gb download limit per month

My question is, is this enough?

We'd be using the internet for the usual things: Youtube, facebook, IM...So on. But, my brothers are also wanting to play world of warcraft. Would we be able to do those things with 5gb/month?

Thanks

-Kirby

Hmm, sounds like satellite. Is that correct? If not, what is it?

It's a box you install that allows wiresless internet throughout the house, by rogers. Something like roger's HUD, I believe?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge.

Wide area broadband I guess.

I'd think that for typical uses you'll be fine, but not if you do things like downloading movies and so forth. Also check out the ping times before you commit to anything.

It's the world of warcraft bit I'm worried about - would it use much (or, any) to play? Other then patch updates.

Not sure, but I suspect it doesn't use a lot of total bandwidth.

Only issue you'll have with WoW is getting patches because they can easily be up to a gig.

I personally go through that in a day or two easily. I do a lot of media uploading and downloading. I also play wow. If you do general internet usage, you should be fine.

You won't have enough. On weekdays I usually only do that usual browsing and hour of Youtube, and I easily get up to 1GB usage and most of the times over that. But you could check for the first month if you have enough of it plus you can know your internet usage through their website (I'm also with rogers but with the 60GB limit(probably will be upgrading to the 95GB limit package which is the same but $10 more for the extra gigs in the limit, and I don't even download torrents most of the time, although I watch a lot of videos from tv channel's websites), I use their website to know how much usage I have left).

With YouTube, WoW (patches, etc), I'd say no. Not a chance.

Without downloading movies, music or other files, I hit 40gb's every month, just from browsing the internet & playing various games. Streaming video is a large portion of this, but you're going to find out you're severely limited in what you can do. And this is from when I was cutting back significantly, it is usually in the 110gb to 130gb range per month.

Though it will still be better than dial-up, even if you are limited.

Don't mean to thread-hijack, but how are guys able to figure out how much data you're using?

I find out using Roger's tool as shown in the hide tags.

Most ISPs' in Canada have a data usage chart on their website for customers. Cogeco, Rogers and Bell all have this functionality.

Nope, definitely not enough. I assume you use the internet so does the rest of your family...a boring day inside + YouTube can easily be around 1gb.

Depends on how you use it really. Coming from dial-up you'll probably feel like you're in heaven with having 5 gigs, but once that settles you'll notice more would be waaaay handier.

Either way, it's moving up from dial-up, so I'd say: do it!

It is true going from dial-up to a 5gb limit on broadband would be worth it, but after you use high speed for a little while you will see it isn't plausible to do 5gb or less of traffic a month. There are some times I do twice that in a day, and I don't even have a particularly fast connection (3mbps down/768kbps up).

I had 30gb this month. Although I did install wow like 3 times on my new computer, plus the patches.

You could get by with 5gb, but you'de have to watch very closely - youtube, and wow(even no downloads) could stack it up pretty fast.

5gb won't be enough (just to make my post a bit more on-topic).

I'm glad i got flat rate. Would annoy me very much to have to think about amount of usage.
