I'll stay as the USA, and I will be annexing Canada (just Canada, revoking the other stuff). Here's my cover story (surmized):

Given the quite radical shift in American Politics and Demographics I am gonna say it takes 20 years, and causes 15% infrastructure damage every 10 years(so 30% overal)

So essentially any penalties and benefits from the annexation will be calculated in the budget around 19 years from now? So if the next budget in around 9 years, I pay 50% for infrastructure, then the penalty doesn't count against me, but I still only stay with the US IAG for the next budget.

Year 1: You state your intent

Year 10: You pay the fee and your infrastrucure increases by whatever amount you paid for.

Year 10: You gain the territory and recieve a 50% infrastructure hit.

Year 10: Your new budget is calculated

Year 20: Your new budget is calculated normally

Year 20: The target countries IAG is calculated

Year 20: Both of the IAGs are added together and the average infrastructure of both countries is taken.

Also, please remember that all annexures are subject to the rule change, so annexing most of South America will wreck your Infrastructure entirely.

That sounds a little pointless, in my opinion. I can see how it provides some benefit, but it doesn't keep people from just re-arming.

 

Personally, I would have just kept the armies like they were (although perhaps the US army would have been scaled back a little bit so it isn't too intimidating to wage war). It's a lot better and makes more sense to have the military and require people to forcefully annex places than the peaceful annexation that is going on right now.

 

If everyone started off the same (which is basically true with the current restrictions), the game will start off too slowly, possibly leading to a lack of interest. I personally am fine with the rules regarding annexation since it helps keep things from going too quickly, but it's seriously a low blow to have the armies cut to nothing right off the bat.

 

Honestly, you have the potential to recreate the fun environment of the original Hegemony (before half of the people that play this game even started the original). The rules that we experienced in Empire (and again in several other experiments) will only serve to damage interest in this game. Of course, the rules aren't as restrictive, but they're close.

Anyway, we can't really go back to the first Hegemony....there are not the people joining and leaving that there was, so people don't inherent swathes of land.

Anyway the whole point of removing all the armies is to stop people using it as an excuse for having a massive army...Example:

I want a GDP the same as the USAs.

The USA has an utterly ludicrous GDP, but everyone wants the highest figure.

 

People can rearm, that doesn't really bother me, but they should rearm to some reasonable standard...not just:

'That country has a big army'

'That country is also 5 times the size of you'

'I am gonna have a big army like that country.'

 

It also means that people don't suddenly find 500 tanks they didn't know they had...and then find them again next week.

Summary of the first official decade plan

 

We are annexing Kyrgyzstan, which will cost us 650,000,000. It is a small, yet underdeveloped country. We expect this will take a 10% infra. hit.

We are annexing Azerbaijan, which will cost us 2.6 billion. It is as advanced as Kazakhia, but culturally different. We expect it to take a 15% infra. hit.

We are spending Half (11 Billion) of our income on Infra. This will leave us at a 1.25 infra. level in 2020.

 

That leaves us with 7.6 billion to spend.

 

We are developing a new line of guns, which will take 5 years. (0/5)

We are restarting our army, which will cost 3 billion to have a force of 150,000 recruits, to be ready by 2015, equipped with our new guns.

We are restarting our air force, which will have a base cost of 1 billion for a base, plus 40 KAF-10's (f-16 E/f variant) @ 25 mil. a piece, for a cost of 1 more billion) plus the factories to make them (.5 bil.) =2.5 bil.

 

which leaves us with 2.1 billion to spend on other research.

I honestly don't consider V2 (or even the latter part of V1 for that matter) to be the original Hegemony. As far as I'm concerned, the original Hegemony was the period when it was first created in Off-Topic (and thus had like over 20 players) up to the point where I joined. The rules were pretty straightforward and lax, and it worked for us because people were.... well not morons. It went downhill when we experienced growth, although it would have died if it weren't for that growth, ironically.

 

Anyway, I see your point. I'm just afraid that re-armament would take over a week, which would cause people to possibly lose interest in the game. The creation of alliances and the waging of warfare are the only fun things about Hegemony. Waiting around and doing nothing while a random person says "starting X project to do X for X days" isn't.

Heh that reminds me 1/2 of the surplus that I have is used to rearm the military (this is over a 10 year period mind you) while 3/4 of the other half of the surplus is used to promote key industries (ie steel manufacturing and pharmaceuticals etc.)

Do other countries have militaries? NPC countries...

Yeah, they get 20,000 soliders to defend each city(red dots on the map), plus a randomly sized army(not larger than the population) to retaliate against countries invading it.

Annexing gets rid of this whole lot...and Conquering gets rid of this whole lot as well.

If I was temporally insane then yes, it could, theoretically, spawn an army of 80 million.

 

Far more likely is between 100,000 and 1 million. It would depend on what its neighbours were doing...France building an army of 20 million and stationing it on the Franco-German boarder would mean Germany would raise an army bigger than 1 million.
