Maturity

EDIT: Due to some jokes and other misunderstandings, I'm pointing out we're discussing mental/emotional maturity, not physical maturity.

My own interpretation of maturity is acting appropriately to the situation. Someone who might act like a [bleep] at a party but solemn at a funeral for example.

Someone who isn't an idiot and does things just to annoy people. Maturity, in my opinion, is considering the feelings of other people. Wether it's their views on a topic, or their feelings in a certain situation. Being able to understand and act appropriately.

 

Not being silly all the time, and being responsible.

Serious =/= mature, IMO.

 

I agree that at certain cases maturity requires seriousness, but the two are not the same.

I'm not sure. People say I'm mature, although I laugh at sex jokes and play tag and that sort of thing. Although I do know when to be serious, and when people think you should be serious but it's better not to be. I sort of create my own rules based on those society has established.

 

All in all, I find maturity to be more a vessel for some to feel better than others - the same as such imaginary concepts as being "civilized." I would rather use other reasons to be pretentious based upon my own merits than others' faults. Perhaps that's maturity - judging others against yourself, rather than against created ideals.

Maturity really depends on the context of the situation. People may show maturity at certain times and not at others.

I'm assuming you mean emotional maturity, as I don't consider physical maturity to be in the same boat at all.

I interpret maturity as compromise between seriousness and humor. Life's short and it isn't going to be fun to be serious the entire time. However, this pretty much depends on how much respect you have for other people, so you'll know how to act in any situation accordingly.

 

In OT, maturity is fairly existant, immaturity tends to be dismissed or ignored in order to let the poster know his attempts at attention fail.

Really, "maturity" is subjective. You might be 20 years old and still pull pranks on your teachers, or you might be a 9 year old antisocial. It depends a whole lot really.

This is quite a good way of putting it. Seriousness when the situation calls for it is a sign of maturity although being serious all the time isn't, in my opinion.

Maturity is a relative thing...someone really isn't just "mature" or "immature". In general, I try to be mature, but I have moments, like everyone else does, where I say or do something immature.

I'd say kinda, i am when i need to be. If im out with my friends or something im a bit immature but if i was working or something then i've got my mature face on.

Maturity is one of those things that can be judged better but those outside then yourself. I try to be a mature, and think I acheive this at times, but other times I don't. It's something that everyone needs to work on, and I don't think anyone ever achieves "perfect maturity"

No im not. I can act like it if i want to but im not mature, and i like it.

In my opinion it just depends of the situation at hand. When the mood is serious, or I am around certin people (Family, teachers ect...) I will be as mature as possible. Another thing I try to do is always listen to what people have to say, even if you don't agree with the person in question. However, once I am around freinds or in certin situations (IE forum games) I am very laid back mellow person. I do however keep a certin amount of maturity to show that I am not compleatly stupid.

I am mature when I need to be. However, I don't often need to be. At work, where I should technically act serious, I act immaturely depending on who I'm working near. Why? It makes the day go by more smoothly.

I'm studying Biology so to me being mature means being fully developed, and my huge [rooster] assures me that I am.

However some people like using the word to describe complete mental development, and this post tells me that I am not yet at this stage.

I was originally going to post my strong views against mature people but I'd rather not attract their oppressive gaze.

 

Well I have to pretend to be mature when I'm around people whom I value the judgement of. A way of seeking approval, I suppose. Always seen it as being too down-to-Earth because you realise as you grow older that the world is a pretty boring place and there's no Santa. I find maturity to be kind of boring, to be honest. For example not being allowed to laugh at sexual things? Please. I'm here to make the most of my life, I won't let some killjoys ruin it for me just because they think life is important. Maybe I'll edit this when I can think of something better to say but generally I'm saying that maturity is fine; my issue is that it's not necessarily going to contribute to much happiness. That's what I think of MENTAL maturity anyway. Physical maturity can't be helped so it's not something you should criticise, really.
