Are you an admin, moderator or user of these forums?

My favorite forum software is phpBB, I've made a few skins for it (Including one that TIF used to use before the switch to IPB) and it is an absolute pleasure to theme. The CSS is incredibly elegant. I've been a more or less real mod on it here, and more of a fake admin on countless local installations.

Phpbb, defnitely. While it isn't as fancy as IPB in many ways, I beleive it has some key functionality, and as Dsavi says, open source is awesome.

 

I've been a mod on IPB and phpbb, and I've been an admin on several very small phpbb installations.

What are your views?

I've only used phpbb3 and IPB, so I'm not all that experienced with them. I suppose I prefer that latter of the two, but that's not for coding or anything.

I am not after just for coding, I am after all issues, from setting up a new category to posting.

I voted for vBulletin even though i think the choice between vBulletin and IP.Board is kinda hard - i ultimately decided to vote for Vbulletin, because it was the first one i really loved to use, so i'll guess my vote was based more on "old loyalty" than anything else.

I find vBulletin to feel very old, and lacks some basic UI logic.

No question for me... I've handled Admin of both IPB and PhpBB before... and I can say that, by far, IPB kicks [bleep] for both usability and Admin capabilities. Only could have wished that PhpBB had taken a few cues in this department. :unsure:

phpbb for sure. All of the TIF pages loaded way faster with phpbb than with this IPB. Also, it worked better with my phone, which really suffers from the increased data.

Also, to prevent a myriad of polls popping up, this addition has been restricted to moderators and up. Users are always free to send a PM and request one.

Well then definitely IPB. Moderator-specific features work far better. To prevent a myriad of polls popping up, this addition has been restricted to moderators and up. Users are always free to send a PM and request one.

That's possible with phpbb too.

 

I only have administrated and moderated some phpbb forums, so I can't really judge seing as I never had access to that on IPB, most people prefer to use free software for forums.

I have been a moderator and administrator on both phpBB and IPB. As a moderator, I think both are easy. IPB might have a few more tools that can make things a tad bit faster though. As far as the ACP, phpBB was easy enough once I got used to it... but forum permissions... LOL! The first time I saw that section of the phpBB ACP it was like looking at a maze. Of course I got used to it eventually and it became like a second nature, but as for starting out, I'd say the IPB ACP makes a lot more sense and is a little more user friendly.

I was just informing the OP that users can't create polls.

Doesn't make much of a difference to me. I absolutely hate having to click "go" after choosing a forum from the drop down menu though, so just for that I am going to say whatever was used here before this software.

Yeah, the ACP is certainly confusing at first, but once you get used to it you can use it really well. IPB doesn't seem as flexible (Like the way that you can't make so that users can make polls in one forum but not another).

Yeah and you can't turn the censor off in a specific forum... :P

IPB - it looks far better and the modifications you can get for it just seem like a higher standard than those for phpBB.

^ I disagree strongly on your first point. IPB looks like it was designed by Fisher-Price, with all the unnecessarily big glossy bars everywhere.

Web 2.0 for you. I just go with the flow.

The difference is not "Web 2.0" or not, the difference is basic graphic design. IPB's designers go with the flow too- It's just that they go too much with the flow and they're four years late to the glossiness fad. Even Apple is past that, they now use smooth slight gradients and flat colors, with the exception of program icons and a few other things.

phpbb, I'm a sucker for open source and the customization possibilities are endless.

I love IPB, but if it ever came down to prices it would be SMF. I love the way you can install plugins so easily. Don't know why MyBB isn't on this list, either! It's great!!
