Hunting Penguins

Penguin Hunting

Note: This activity is unrelated to the D&D and the penguin pet.

Red salamanders are a popular hunting target due to their fast experience. The problem is that the limited location means that it's difficult to find an unoccupied world even during off hours. Instead of hopping from world to world, try hunting penguins. It offers comparable experience per hour without the crowds.

In order to hunt penguins, you must have completed the quest Hunt for Red Raktuber. It's fairly easy, and the level requirements are low.

The best way to reach the iceberg is through the Fairy Ring system. Use the code "D K S" to teleport south of the Snowy Hunter Area. However, instead of crossing the narrow peninsula to your north, go a bit further east to the dock you first accessed during the penguin quest series. Travel using the boat there.

You'll end up on the iceberg. Head northeast until you see Jim the polar bear. Just past him is a series of ice pillars that function as stepping stones to the Iceberg Hunting Area. Cross them, and you'll end up on a large sheet of ice crawling with penguins.

Penguins are the prey you are after, but there are a variety of ways you can catch them.

The best experience is from setting up net traps, although you can also track penguins from level 45-50.

Your setup should look like this:

Inventory-2.png

  • Since the Iceberg Hunter Area is classified as a polar region, a full set of Kyatt clothing acts as camouflage and increases your success rate while hunting.
  • The lunar staff is for accessing the Fairy Ring network.
  • You may choose to wear weight reducing items such as a spottier cape, penance gloves, and boots of lightness, particularly if you are tracking penguins.
  • A dueling ring or charged glory amulet is recommended to leave the area quickly.

There are two spots where net traps can be set up with half a dozen fishing rods each, so it's possible for several hunters to share a world. I find that the area along the southern edge of the iceberg is best. Just cycle between the following 4 rods:

Occasionally, you may find that you've caught a KGP agent instead of a penguin. They look identical, and while Jim the polar bear gives you an extra 2 hunter xp for each one you bring him, the long jump across the stepping stones doesn't make it worthwhile. Just release them as you would normally.

At 68 hunter, I get about 70k xp per hour hunting penguins, which is slightly higher than the amount of xp I've gotten hunting red salamanders. This figure should rise with a higher hunter level. While I almost always have to hop at least half a dozen times to find an empty spot at red salamanders, the iceberg is usually deserted.

I wanted to level hunter but hated chins/red sals but I went to penguins and at level 83 I got 95k xp a hour without an arctic bear, I'm guessing with an arctic bear out it would give 2k+ more xp a hour maybe 5k.

-------------

Paying attention 100% I got 98.5k xp and then 100.5k xp a hour at 85 hunter with arctic bear out. The bear does make a big difference. =p

If you are ever taken by a random event and lose your ropes and nets, there is a Ruined Boat conveniently located on the southeast corner of the iceberg. Search it for unlimited amounts of driftwood, rope, fishing nets, and knives.

Happy hunting!

I've checked out this area before but I had no idea the experience rates were so high. I'll definitely be going back there now, and if the xp adds up as you say it will then I think I've found how I'll be raising my hunter skill from now on!

Good guide, but I would NOT recommend these past level 80. Especially when you get into the 90+ range its very easy to catch over 350 red chins an hour, with the right techniques over 450 is possible (my record is 514) which is equal if not better exp at comparable levels at penguins and great for money (compared to the nothing you get here).

9/10

Great as an alternative to red sally's though, wish this would have been out when I was leveling to 80 because I HATED red sallys by the end of it, and this was before the update on randoms so I probably lost over 50 traps when I did it. /facepalm

I did two Arctic Bear's worth of hunting earlier, and it worked out to be just under 76k exp per hour at 71 Hunter, full camo and the boost from the bear. Highly recommended. :)

Very nice. Less intense than other hunter activities, yet a faster rate of experience. I get about 70k xp an hour as well, usually slightly more. I would use an Arctic Bear, but the timer isn't very long and I have no idea where the nearest obelisk is. Oh, and I also got one of my last 10 music tracks to unlock.

That's true, which is why I'm going to be revising my guide soon with some more information . I suggest bringing along a summoning potion (currently ~1.1k a dose) and sipping it before summoning a new bear.

In addition, I'm exploring the use of hunter potions to boost your xp/hr even more. At the extremely low price of 87gp a dose, you obtain an additional 3 levels to hunter. I will be testing this technique in conjunction with the berserker prayer and posting the results.

Strangely enough, with 2 levels more to boot and with an Arctic Bear, my xp rate per hour soared from 71000xp/hr to 98000xp/hr...maybe I concentrated more, I don't know, but it certainly seems effective :P

Excellent! :)

Btw, from the BTS

Some of the In other news... you can expect to see this month will be: adding a waypoint marker to your world map; making it easier to get hunter supplies from the penguin areas; and adding new functionality to the Orb of Oculus (machinima camera). Weve also opened RS Classic sign-up until Tuesday 15th June for any members who fancy a nostalgic trip to yesteryear.

I'm thinking that means the boat with the fishing nets and stuff. This might just accompany another update to the area!

Berserker Prayer probably isn't worth it, seeing how expensive ppots are compared to hunter potions.

Also consider bringing Magpies instead of the Arctic Bear. In 1 hour, you get 100k profit. 100k profit or 5k hunter xp (3.15 minutes of work)? You would have to make over 1.9m/hr to justify using the Arctic Bear.

I forgot about the penguin hunter area! I was going to hunt there once I was level 50 for net traps but I forgot. Thanks for reminding me and also reminding me they give great xp.

Just btw, they made that update so you can get equipment from the boat easier. What this means? Idk, you might want to check it out though.

For people that don't like hunter, the bear is worth it Zaaps.Too bad I only found this now when I've passed to grenwalls.

Even if I hated hunter, I'd choose 100k over 5k hunter xp. You can do that in less than 5 minutes.

Good guide! I was hoping someone would make one.
