Firstly, yes it is safe to download Firefox, 100 million downloads can't be wrong. Firefox has been in the news, and all over the web. Read the download.com review if you still don't trust it ;)

More to the point, is it safe to use Firefox? It's time for me to tell you that it is Intenet Explorer which is not safe to use :!: ActiveX and OS inegration make IE an easy target for virusses and spyware. Firefox, however, does not allow AcitiveX to run :) Firefox also has an excellent history of patching security exploits in the browser, wheras Microsoft has often left known security holes in their browser for months on end.

Most likely, however, you don't want to hear technical waffle and statistics, you just want the web to work, and as Firefox is streamlined and user friendly, it'll do just that. It's a tiny download (5 MB,) installation takes seconds and it automtically imports your favorites and settings from IE *thumbs up*

Once you're off and browsing, be amazed by the simplicity of the default theme, (or download other themes to make it look however you like) and marvel at the beauty of tabed browsing - keep your taskbar tidy and save your PC's RAM for other more improtant things.

Are you perhaps sick and tired of popup windows getting through IE's popup blocker? Firefox's is far more advanced. Want a special feature that you think might be useful? Install extensions. Check your gmail/yahoo mail automatically, show the weather in your status bar or automatically download all the links on a page - with extensions it's all possible, but only if you want it.

I could go on for a while here ;) Just download it and try it, if you don't like it you can just uninstall and continue using IE as per normal.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post back here :D

Use anything other than IE for browsing the web. Just stopping ActiveX already increases your security. Then there's the holes where spyware comes through on IE and just gives you popups even when you're not online. I personally use FireFox with the AdBlock extension for no banner ads and the NoScript extension so javascripts won't work unless I allow the site. I do this because sites can sometimes contain unsafe (dodgy) javascripts.

Download Internet Explorer, thats a great browser 8)

I agree.

PS: No sarcasm from me though. :?

I prefer Firefox because of its extensions, but yes, IE is a good browser - if configured properly. The problem is that not everyone knows how to do this, and you two (Chris and Sharper, seeing as I'm quite sure you both know perfectly well how to secure IE properly) are outnumbered by a vast amount of people who don't know that. Take a look at the number of 'I got hacked' posts in RS general if you don't believe me ;)

Why is it pointless? He's looking for info, and this is where he'd find it.

Firefox is just basically a better internet explorer.. it's a whole other program, so you can still use IE if you wish (I still do for pages that aren't exactly Firefox-friendly). And you get tabs. Very fun.

a lot of people say that ie is less secure and everything, but i never noticed that part. i just like ff better because of tabs and everything being more compact. i never had a problem back when i used ie (like 50 years ago  ), just firefox looked better. if ie was the exact same as ff, except it had more security flaws, i would have continued using it because i already was using it. its already there, no need to change.

Meh. True, to an extent. I prefer Firefox over IE because on Firefox I can develop webpages easier, work on software, debug software, use tabs, and generally have a better browsing experience. That's just me though, most users don't need these features, though a lot of people like them once they get used to them.

Firefox IS safer from spyware, I can assure you that. I've had vast experience testing that out...

The only complaint I have about firefox is that it tends to be a bit more of a RAM hog than IE.

Other than that, I love firefox.

Huh? I have found IE to be more of a hog than FF.

fire fox is vastly superior to IE, user friendly speaking (IMO). plus, there are so many extensions available to firefox users (for free, of course), that you can customize your browser to your own needs and wants. i personally have the adblock extentsion and a counterpart for it, no script, foxytunes (an extenstion that allows me to control my media program from the browser), mouse gestures (total time free-er upper), an IE tab extension, which allows me to view IE pages in a tab in firefox, and soo many other things that make my web surfing soo much easier. it really is worth the little time it takes to switch. as for opera, i have no idea how it flies, but from what i've read, it seems ok. (i'm still a firefox fanatic all the way)

I think IE is a fine browser. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s pretty nice, but kind of slow. The only reason another browser would be better than it is if you weren̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t just the regular person who doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t need all that extra stuff.

I agree that I find Internet Explorer to be slow some times. I remember running a test between IE/Firefox/Opera and you could definately tell the difference between IE and the others.

Meh, I just didn't like Firefox and Opera enough to want to change, but I do like alot of their features. I just decided to make do with Internet Explorer since it's just there, and it works.

Maybe when Google finally make a browser it will be l33t and simple :)

Use tabbed browsing and Firefox will use far less RAM than IE.

I think there is/was a bug (might be fixed in 1.5) where if you left the browser going forever and never closed it, it chewed up memory over a long period of time (like, days on end.) However, this can be easily solved by just closing Firefox once in a while :)
