Real Screamo vs Bad Screamo

Featured Replies

These days the term 'Screamo' is misused so much, and to be fair, it irritates the [bleep] out of me. Bands such as Alexisonfire, BMTH, Alesana, and even Hawthorne Heights, are being labelled as Screamo, and quite frankly, they're further from Screamo than Britney Spears is.

Real Screamo, is a genre that stemmed from Hardcore Punk and originated in the early 90s, with bands such as Orchid, Envy, and Saetia. This music has much more profound lyrics than the bands being labelled as Screamo these days, and the style is very different. The guitars tend to be chaotic, and the music usually progresses from slower riffs onwards to faster more dynamic, downtuned riffs. The thing that in my opinion, is most predominant in real Screamo, is the vocal style used. It tends to be very high shreiks and screams, and sometimes spoken vocals are used.

The music being labelled as Screamo these days is very different. Most of it is Post Hardcore music which in my opinion, has crappy, teenage angst lyrics, and even the bands themselves do not wish to be called Screamo:

Bert McCracken, lead singer of The Used, stated that "screamo" is merely a term "for record companies to sell records and for record stores to categorize them."[34] The groups generally prefer to be described as post-hardcore.[35]

So basically I think people should stop overusing that term, and educate themselves.

Personally, I don't really enjoy pure screamo, but I don't disrespect it as a genre. I prefer post-hardcore stuff like Enter Shikari.

Ugh why do people take these labels to heart so much. They are meant to be a way of definining a broad genre, not tiny differences between bands. Heck we may as well remember the names of the bands as they all seem to want their own genre. Any music where the 'singer' screams is screamo.

Big thanks to Stevepole for the signature!^

A singer who regularly screams = screamo.

No need to be a genre-[bleep].

You right, dude  I/m with you  I prefer post-hardcore too, and in my opinion Screamo is just a copy of this genre with a minor modifications, and so do not make it into a separate genre of music

Ugh. This thread already.

Is the concept of genres so hard to grasp for some of you? They're not intended to make you sound like an elitist, but they are there for a very good reason. They are there to aid in classification - and when bands such as The Used get misclassified, it leads to this whole war between "true" and "false" screamo fans; the same applies to metal or just about any genre that branches out widely. Usually, it's not the fault of the fans but the fault of the music press - most mainstream music magazines and publications have zero clue of what they're actually talking about and it leads to all this bulls**t that I would assume most of you hate. Genres are not even hard to get right so these publications and critics that should full-well know what they're talking about have no excuses.

And no, any music where the singer screams is not necessarily screamo. Sigh, Darkthrone and even Muchuumu are not screamo bands.

It really only seems that the people who [bleep] and complain about bands not being a true example of a genre are the ones who want to separate themselves from bands popular from the masses.

I do admit, however, my description of screamo was somewhat flawed, but it usually tends to be the case.

So wrong.

I don't really like a lot of the music that these guy's would lump into either a "screamo" category or Post-Hardcore. It's just not really my thing. Does that mean I hate all music that has screaming in it? Of course not.

It's a classification system, that's all. It's got nothing to do with "separating from the masses" and more to do with actually clarifying what a certain band or group does. It's a lot easier to get recomendations for music / talk about music if you don't have to try and lump everything into one incredibly broad genre. It would be like talking about a new truck you got and when asked what brand it is you reply "Oh, it's a truck".

Genres are useful, he was just being a douche about it though. Honestly, a lot of post hardcore and screamo is actually pretty close, there's no need to be so elitist about "real screamo vs [cabbage] screamo". I would support what he was saying if he wasn't coming off as such a whiny [bleep] about people mislabeling.

Same opinion here. OP himslef says it isn't screamo, it's post-hardcore, but calls it "[cabbage] screamo".

There's nothing wrong with trying to categorize certain music from other music for the sake of clarity. But it just seems like a lot of the people that complain about a certain band not being a representation of a certain genre are music snobs like the OP. His complaining isn't so much about bands being miscategorized than it is about the popular bands being "[cabbage]."

I really didn't pay much attention to the OP. I just wanted to say that it's not just being elitist to classify music under sub-genres.

Neither did I apart from the bit about misclassification. How did I miss the irony.

Also post-hardcore and screamo are vaguely similar but there's quite a definite distinction between them to me.

Post-hardcore.

Screamo.

Not to be an arse or anything but they are really not much alike underneath what you'd find in your local music shop. Post-hardcore is typically closer to alternative/noise/indie rock whereas screamo tends to be closer to old-school hardcore punk, albeit extended and more metallic.

Gotta be trolling. Screamo has been around longer than Enter Shikari, mate.

@mEb/Skull Emblem, way to contribute.

@Istolethepie, MY OPINION is that I don't like Post Hardcore that much, modern Post Hardcore anyway, and therefore I don't like the label Screamo- A genre I do like- being tainted by bands being classified as it, which arent. Maybe it's elitist but whatever, fact of the matter is, it's still putting things in the wrong genre, which is stupid anyway.

And i called it bad screamo, not [cabbage] screamo. Bad referring to 'mislabled'.

@Danqazmlp

'Any band where the singer screams is screamo'

This is exactly what I mean. That's like calling Death Metal Screamo, since a lot of Death Metal and Grindcore bands use screamed vocals. They're from completely different musical roots- Metal and Punk, you wouldn't call Social Distortion metal, and you wouldn't call Deicide punk, it's the same concept.

Best sceamo:

Whats sad is I own the original cassette from back then, somewhere.[/hide]

What annoys me a bit with it all is when people go Nazi on the whole thing, where everything MUST be sub-sub-sub-classified into a theme or else it doesn't belong 100%. It's like when I need new songs from my friends 80GB something-rather library of songs for using to host with, I ask for say "something with a bit of scream but more of a punk rock to it" then im given the lecture on the EXACT definition of each band and what they fall under. sure, some things need to be split to tell the difference on certain levels, but when you have to listen to each song from the band just to determine their own genre for themselves (which seems to be what its like these days) it's a pain in the ass.

You changed the title of the thread, it was originally "Real Screamo vs [cabbage] Screamo". Doesn't really matter though.

was a mod then, its better that way anyway >.>

Screamo can be good, but I have to admit I much prefer Metalcore and Post Hardcore, which are both usually conglamorated under the same label.

We get it. No new music can be considered screamo.

In 10 years kids will be whining about "real post-hardcore".

OT: I like some "real" screamo, but mostly post-hardcore.

CTTS is new, and is considered Screamo, and plenty of other modern bands are too.
