You can only report players who..

"For that rule you can only report players who have spoken or traded recently."

Wth, why? I tried to report someone who had a name I found rather offensive, involving female body parts. (I am female. :P) Seems AWFULLY pointless that someone has to talk before I can report them for their offensive name?

I sure miss the old days where such names gave a permanent ban >_>

If I'm not mistaken, there's a sticky somewhere in the Danish community forum where you can report offensive names. Makes me wonder why they haven't made one on the English forum yet.

Who cares about offensive names, tbh?

Never, EVER use someone's username to judge a person. You won't BELIEVE the countless number of times I've been called a Sonic fanboy just because of my user... <_<

Just like with regular comments, a line has to be drawn somewhere. It's not necessarily about judging people by their name, but about judging the appropriateness of the name. Names can be offensive and inappropriate just like comments can be.

More on-topic - I agree that it is annoying :( It has happened to me once or twice that I tried to report a bad name but couldn't.

A username is an indicator on someone's personality. I can guarantee that someone with a username of "I_luv_vachina" is likely not old enough to be driving a car, let alone having sex.

For example: My username Omali is a deliberate misspelling of Omala, Greece, the only landlocked community on its island. It also happens to have a strong pronunciation with O'Malley, an Irish surname, as well as being the first name of Omali Yeshetela (I misspelled that on purpose, the E in "shet" is an I), the leader of the Uhuru Movement in Florida, the African People's Socialist Party, a liberation front seeking African intellectualism. So you have African, Greek, and Irish connections of absolutely no relevance to one another. Needless to say, I love messing with people, mentally.

Really? I thought Omali was just insane.

Darn kids these days need to learn some respect! Whatever though, I'm sure eventually his name will get caught, or changed, or banned, or whatever Jagex does in that situation. What really bothered me is the inability to report in that situation? :S The "What is your level ... " idea is a good one. :D

Don't get me wrong, I very rarely use the report button, and seeing someone with an offensive username doesn't bother me.

I'm just making the point that people with immature usernames are rarely mature people.

I found someone with a seriously disgusting name and I have to agree, it's pretty stupid that you can't report someone without having spoken to or traded with them recently. Most of the time, the people with those names are just running past you or something.

Haven't had that problem.

Maybe its a PMod fringe benefit?

I do report obscene names.

I'm just not going to look at your failed account if one right click followed by a quick couple of lefts and your gone.

As others have said, a line needs to be drawn somewhere.

I don't get offended by usernames, but ones that have obscene words in them shouldn't be aloud. Not because it's going to offend every single person that sees it, but because those are the rules. Rules are made to be followed.

But i personally think that there is a certain tolerances for names like this.

Way back a long time ago when i was PC'ing on my main(I'm talking 2+ years ago) i saw someone by the name of "The Holy Ass". Personally i thought this name was hardly offensive at all, but actually funny. And he was at least over 120 combat, so he had that name for a while.

But i checked that name on the highscores not too long ago (before the display name update) and it wasn't listed. So i think maybe he got banned for his name or other reason. If it was for his name, i think that's a shame.

So, i think there is a certain tolerances for names like that. But someone who's purposely just putting obscene word one after another in their username should have it changed to whatever Jagex sees fit. And be banned from the display name changing feature permanently, no questions asked.

so you are saying you are offended by your own body parts?

No I found his NAME offensive. His name wasn't just [insert female body part]. It was quite a bit more explicit than that. And if you payed attention to what I was saying, the biggest problem wasn't that his name was offensive, it was that I wasn't allowed to report him simply because he hadn't said anything, which is really illogical and pointless for an offensive name report.

Grow up, it's just a username.

How about YOU grow up, read past the first 2 lines, and stop looking for free post count? The title of my thread wasn't even "OMG offensive names r offensive??" It was about the report feature..

There shouldn't be any offence that could only be reportable if somebody has spoken recently, unless it's an offence the requires talking, such as offensive language. This is even more of a problem on the German language servers, unless they've changed it since the last time I used those; you literally can't report anybody for anything if they haven't talked since you have to choose what you're reporting out of a listing of your chat log. Personally, I couldn't care less about bots, but macro reports aren't possible without it being an auto-typing macro. You also can't report somebody for scamming unless they were advertising the trade: say for example, you are trying to buy a super-poisoned weapon and they swap it out for an unpoisoned version, obviously worth less, and you don't notice. If you had been saying that you were buying a dds for max trade and you wind up with a regular dagger, and they never spoke, unless you can report the [x] wants to trade with you message now. All of these efforts being taken to set up an automated customer support really seem to be ruining the game a lot more than they're aiding it.

way back a long time ago a famous (?) or at least very high ranking runecrafter was named [kitty] Crunch

I dont know if Jagex banned him or made him change his username (this was long before the name changes), but I would say this player would be the exception to the rule. In fact a lot of players prior to name changes had names they made as a kid that they grew to regret or hate

Lucky for me, I came up with this name while trying to find a way of having "halo" as my name without any numbers, and I ended up sounding like a bit of an intellect by having a name after a scifi book. Or just Ring Worm to people that dislike me,...lol

See, but the thing, I don't find Kitty Crunch offensive. Whereas one of the negative effect of the name change are immature little boys (ok, maybe girls too, idk) changing their name to something immature and sexual for [cabbage]s and giggles, knowing all they'll get is a slap on the wrist. (Think it's how it works.) I think someone with offensive names should get their name changing ability revoked to once per year (i.e. one more change so they don't get stuck with 32957 after they get caught.) If they choose an offensive name AGAIN, they can be stuck with 3252 for a year.

And I definitely once started a conversation on Ape Atoll just because someones username bugged me. Just a quick hi, lol.

I also agree that someone shouldn't need to speak. Although the scamming one is kinda dated.... hard to be seriously scammed these days with the "Fair Trade" thing.

If you find that happening, try and get them to talk. For example: Ask them if they have an item up for sale or something.

And if they are muted, you aren't gonna have much luck with that.

I could imagine that people who are muted do things like this just to give Jagex the proverbial finger. :???:

I do actually enjoy some of the clever spoonerisms. But for every clever name there are 100 crude, vulgar, racist wannabees.
