Contradictory statements there, seeing as how 'twas a Russian who developed said cannon. Not that you were expected to know that, though, so 'tis okay.

Ross, it disabeled the field which was stopping the comm blockage. If we ran a test on it using an EMP like the last one and a quick missile barage at it, then maybe you'd agree?

Earth, it's the size of a system. That's unimaginably big. Even if we converted both our ships into one giant EMP/bomb, we would be able to scratch maybe 0.000000001% of it, at best.

 

We are staying away from it until we know what we're up against.

Ross, in case you forgot, it's the size of multiple solar systems now. The biomass was estimated to have reached Sol by the time we returned to Earth.

Yeah, but the more mass it garners through consumption the faster it's gonna grow. I call being the kamakaze! I want to see whats inside that thing.

Listen, do you know what's in between stars? Nothing. A whole lot of nothing. That thing grows by eating energy, right? So we're more or less safe for the time being, assuming this analysis is correct.

Stars PRODUCE energy. and remember, 7 years pass in the systems as we travel. We could end up inside the thing in all honesty.

Earth, that is incorrect. The blob's expansion is stable at just under 2x lightspeed. I think the Unity warp drive operates outside of conventional space/time, so it takes 7 years to reach our destination in normal time despite, only a month having passed for us. That would also mean we don't encounter the blob until warp is disengaged.

 

I think it's just some sort of field, possibly shutting down electronics or concealing its contents. My guess would be that the actual biomass is what Earth released, no more. It simply doesn't make sense that an organic being could expand that fast.

 

Perhaps it's like that one episode of The Outer Limits, where an audio frequency was broadcast from a distant solar system that changed humans, sometimes damaging them but ultimately mutating the race so they could survive the changing sun and new environment.

Nex, that is time dilation. It still doesn't make our ship slower. Which reminds me: nothing should be able to travel faster than the speed of light.

 

 

 

Further, the blob should not expand outwards at a linear rate. If the blob is growing by a certain area/volume, then the speed of its increase in radius is lessened (because larger circles have greater area relative to radius than small circles).

Regardless of what you say, I am restating what the AI said. For as long as we observed the field, it expanded at the same speed.

If the blob's energy also increases exponentially, then that would be very bad. VERY BAD.

It's energy lies in movement, and there are several asteroids and other such things careening through space. We also can't know if other alin ships are going to be engulfed by the blob, or if other races built little way houses for laughs, kick,s and the occasional eat.

By the way, you're speaking of a paralell dimention, if we were traveling in a different dimention then it would apear for us as if the world would shift into something else, but we'd appear to shrink into nothing for the rest of those who see only 3D. The best analogy would be the warp pipes down to bonus coins in Mario, our bearing is distorted in a direction we can't see so that the path is shortened.

So, basically, we just crushed distance into a huge bear hug to get where we need to go faster. But by doing that we lose our grip on time, which makes it slow. AND! If the blob is a machine, as Archi stated as a possibility, then it is completley logical to assume it would grow linearly. Doubly so if the things Organic covering isn't a sham.
