Kenshinjapan
Hello, I enjoy playing games in my spare time and my current home pc is simply not able to cope with the high requirements of these games. The only reason that I need a pc is for tip.it forums and gaming so I want to buy a nice pc solely for gaming. Could anyone give me some good ideas on the ideal computer for around 1000 dollars? Thanks :) YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE!
Orpheus
It'd be nice to know a few more specifics, like what games you plan on running, if you want to future proof, any specific specs you're aiming for, etc. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal. OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.
Kenshinjapan
Umm well the main game would be warcraft, I want a computer that will run smoothly once the expansion comes out and I might add on a few other games eventually. Future proof? Sorry but I'm very computer illiterate so don't know most of the lingo. If you mean that it would become obsolete in 2 years then yes, I would like one to last for some time. YOU! Orpheus
Hmm, future-proofing basically means having it be powerful enough to where you could run games even a few years from now. Still, $1000 is quite a bit and would get you something quite nice, but I have classes in the morning so I can't quite make a good parts list for you. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. Kenshinjapan
That computer does look nice and does have a nice price tag, but some of the reviews troubled me. I'd like a good customer service and it seems alot are having trouble with the installation. Also, none of the reviews talked about using games on it, I'll look around for more info on it though :). @Nifl, it's cool, thanks for your help :) YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE! Skeptical
Costco does have an awesome return policy. "Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security." Kimberly
Costco does have an awesome return policy. Don't they require a membership to purchase there? That's a drawback for most people. Honestly, if your budget is truly that much, you could build yourself a PC that will last a good, long time. I would give it serious consideration. SixFootOne
http://www.hardware-revolution.com/1000-gaming-computer/ This is a really good, detailed article for building a gaming pc for about $1000. It has links on where to buy all the parts, what parts to buy, why to buy them, as well as links helping you understand the concept of each part. If you don't want to build it yourself it should at least give you a good idea on what you can get for around that price range. Also the author keeps the article up to date. He upgrades the parts occasionally when prices drop/something better comes out. If you want to order a gaming pc online that they build for you but you choose the part i would recommend cyberpower. Bought from them before and had great experiences. When choosing to buy parts, or looking for reviews on the parts i always trust newegg.com. Hope that helps. OldJoe
Odies pc has a weak gpu. Do you want a cusom list? Also, you don't need 1k for Warcraft to run smoothly. Kenshinjapan
I'd rather just buy all of the stuff together. Knowing me, I'd break something since I'm not too tedious :P YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE!
Kaphias
Do you need a new screen, keyboard, mouse, and speakers etc. as well? If so, these will drop down the possible price of the actual computer at least $150 or so. 8,325th to 99 Firemaking 3/9/08 | 44,811th to 99 Cooking 7/16/084,968th to 99 Farming 10/9/09 | Runescaper August 2005-March 2010Tip.it Mod Feb. 2008-Sep. 2008 | Tip.it Crew Sep. 2008-Nov. 2009
CaJ
Some PCS go for $3000-4000, so a good PC for $1000 seems reasonable... Unfortunately in today's market you have to keep buying them in order to keep up. My Windows XP can no longer handle present day games due to the sheer amount of RAM and speed they require in order to play.
OldJoe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883147193Bit more power than Odies gpu, but i'd still like more. The same computer is available with Intel i5 3.2ghz, but i would not pay an extra 200$ for that cpu. I cannot access Hp homepage atm... No response, but i'll try later and see what custom options they have on their site. The Phenom's a very good processor too. Tbh I wouldn't touch a Gateway PC with a bargepole anyway.

jasignhagj
I find it funny how people hate on Gateway, but generally like Acer. Gateway is owned by Acer, a Taiwan based company. Too many people on the internet get one bad computer, and go on a crusade against the company who made it. As for those computers, x6 is overkill. In gaming, a 3ghz x4 will destroy a 2.6ghz x6. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227288Good for the price, although buying from iBuypower can be risky. Gateway, Acer, Packard Bell, Compaq, etc etc. etc. Wouldn't touch any of their stuff. No need for crusades, if people want to waste their money they can do exactly that (which inevitably they do). As far as your comparison goes with the HP without putting it directly under the tekky microscope the HP has an extra 2gig of RAM and extra hdd space. Your intel is a 2.8Ghz not a 3Ghz and the debate still rages at which is best - speed or cores. If that applications aren't written to utilise the cores they become redundant. However I'd just keep watching this space on that issue. Personally I wouldn't buy any of them, I'd do my own build. But if I had to choose one of them as they're similar prices, it'd be the HP. OldJoe
He said prebuilt, so diy is out of the question. I have to say, maybe it's me who's imagining, but the prices on prebuilts seem to have gone up.... I've helped a few with prebuilts before, and i thought i had more and better choices some months ago. jasignhagj
I wouldn't touch HP either. They get packed full of so much crapware it's almost funny. They also use low end motherboards, which have no room for expansion. if you don't want to diy, try and find a local computer store that will build one for you. It may cost more, but you will get a computer with the specs you want. 4 gigs of ram is good for any game out there today, I'd take the more powerful processor (gaming wise) and the better graphics card any day. OldJoe
Every computer company puts a [cabbage]load of programs to their computers, not just HP.And yes, of course they don't buy Foxconn 300$ mobo's for their computers, you want to make as much profit as possible, and every other computer maker does this too. jasignhagj
I wasn't singeling HP out, I was just replying to jrhairychests post where he said he prefered HP. Dell is the best manufacturer IMO, but you certainly pay for it.
Sbrideau
I would strongly advise to stay away from newer Dells. The tend to break for nothing. And to those that are going to bash me because I say that, I'll take an example of my own experience. Dell WAS a good brand, but for a few years now has been making computers that doesn't have quality and that break fast. Yes they have extremely good support, but that's why they have to cut the quality on their computer parts. At work, all the computers are Dells. The old ones still work very well and are still pretty fast. For the new computers though, because I'm part of a new team, out of 11 computers, 2 had the motherboard die on them and one keeps having blue screens. Also they're pretty slow for the specs they have: Windows 7 Pro, Intel Core i5 (can't recall the number of GHz), 8GB of RAM and an ATI card should be faster than my main desktop, which in fact is much faster than the work computers, and has Windows 7 Ultimate, Intel Core i3 2.93GHz, 4GB of RAM (I upgraded that to 8GB this weekend) and a Nvidia 9800GT. Also for my friends, one had a 3 month old laptop Dell at the time, and the hard drive failed. Another of my friends had a laptop screen die on her, and I could continue for a while. Dell is not a company that I would call the Best, considering their pretty high failure rates. On topic: Are you looking for a desktop or laptop? Of course a desktop will be much stronger and cost less than a laptop, plus won't overheat on games after a while. I would say that building (or at least have a shop build one) out of parts that we can make a list here would be the best bet, better bang for the buck as people say. But if you want to stay on prebuilts, out of the ones that have already been mentionned in this thread, I'd go for the hp.
