Zealot
I fail to understand why it's such a big deal. Logistically there are problems to overcome. Maybe we have to find a way to increase the privacy individual service-members have at all times. Maybe we have to require that like women, gay service members can not serve in direct combat roles if they are openly gay (because it is frequently impossible in said roles to provide much privacy at all, and many service members are not going to be comfortable with wondering if their gay foxhole-mate secretly wishes that they were more than trench buddies). Nonetheless, I see absolutely no problem with not viewing sexual orientation as a barrier to service to one's country. "He is no fool who gives up that which he can not keep to gain that which he can not lose."--Jim Elliot "You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England. I did not then see what is now the most shining and obvious thing; the Divine humility which will accept a convert even on such terms. The Prodical Son at least walked home on his own two feet. But who can duly adore that love which will open the high gates to a prodigal who is brought in kicking, struggling, resentful, and darting his eyes in every direction for a chance of escape? The words compelle intrare, compel them to come in, have been so abused by wicked men that we shudder at them; but, properly understood, they plumb the depth of the Divine mercy. The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation."--C.S.Lewis

Vulxai
I'd just like to point out while the repeal has went through, it has not yet actually been repealed. You can still be discharged from the military for being gay right now. Rainbows
As a gay guy who's currently in the process on joining the military (Basic is in March, and not, thankfully, the US one) I'm probably rather bias, but it doesn't seem to have effected the efficency or fighting ability of our armed forces to any degree. Admittedly, we have a rather more liberal society than some parts of the US - so that probably plays a role. Undoubtedly, militaries the world over have a pretty macho culture, but people suck it up (no pun intended) and do their job.

You can still be discharged from the military for being gay right now. They're waiting for the "right time" to actually implement it. Actually the new law just hasn't gone into effect yet. Generally in the United States, laws are set to take effect at some specific future date, and if I remember correctly this one will take effect in January, 2012. Congress gave the brass a little time to work out the logistics of the change. Don't worry, the US Armed Services will figure out how to impliment it and will be in full compliance long before the deadline. I suspect that in units where there are not moralle problems related to homosexuality, discharges may already have stopped, though I can not swear to that. Anything which takes a soldier's mind out of the fight--even for a moment--can get him or her killed. Anything which gives a soldier reason to wonder about whether his trench-buddy really has his back--even if the wonder is baseless--will damage unit cohesion, and make the unit less effective. In the end, we'll make a way through because in the USAF, all branches are very good at adapting to new situations.
