Your top 10 games of 2010

Featured Replies

So 2010's been a pretty awesome year and I was wondering what your guy's top 10 games of 2010 are. Feel free to just post your list here :P

My list:

#10

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Yeah I didn't think I would be putting a WoW expansion on here. However Blizzard has come a long way since the original WoW in 2004 and for the better. They've got the concept of "questing" down to a science now and going back through 1-60 was actually an enjoyable experience. 80-85 also hosted some of the best quests and storylines WoW has had thus-far.

#9

Super Street Fighter IV

I really wish I was better at Street Fighter because SSF4 was a great addition to the series.

#8

Firearms-Source

Sadly this games population really hurt the overall game, just not many people are playing it. I still thought it was a well done version of the original Firearms and I hope their upcoming 2.0 patch will reinvigorate the game and its community. We've certainly waited long enough.

#7

Sid Meier's Civilization V

I never thought I would enjoy, let alone play, a Civ 5 game. While I only played it for a few weeks it still consisted of me playing nearly day long matches. A ridiculously addictive strategy game.

#6

Minecraft

I realize that it's not technically out yet. However minecraft is still an awesome example of what one man can do. I don't even necessarily play this much anymore but I have to give this guy credit.

#5

God of War III

Full disclosure: I never played through the first and second God of War games. Despite that I found it to have a surprisingly decent story with a cliffhanger at the end but also I found it to be one of the best looking games out this year. Brilliant.

#4

Heroes of Newerth

I've taken a bit of a break from HoN but I can still say that this is the game I played the most during 2010. S2 Games has done a great job of keeping the game updated on a regular basis.

#3

Mass Effect 2

I will let you guys know, these next 3 are so close together that I honestly don't know how to order them.

Mass Effect 2 was [bleep]ing brilliant. There, I said it. The first Mass Effect was a good game; albeit with issues. Mass Effect 2 improved upon those issues but also did something that most RPG buffs would scoff at -- they took the numbers out of the game. Mass Effect 2 was not a game about finding the best gear, finding the best and optimal way to use your character. There was very minimal stats and minimal choices as far as gear went. Even though that may sound bad Bioware have actually made a brilliant move: They put back the "role play" in RPG. Mass Effect 2 is all about the choices you make in the game and their lasting effects on the world.

Knowing fully that the ending would have a lasting effect on your next game (Mass effect 3!) really does something special for a game that is a trilogy. Mass Effect really is our "star wars" trilogy for this generation; and its damn good.

#2

Super Meat Boy

It's no secret that I love Super Meat Boy. Hell, I've bought the game twice (bought it again on PC when it was on sale on steam). Super Meat Boy is a ridiculously hard platforming game. What sets it apart from other "hell platform" style games is that while it can be exremely difficult it never feels like it is punishing you. You don't have a set amount of lives, your character spawns right back at the start of the level when you die. You can get into this almost trance-like state just trying over, and over, and over to beat that one level or get that one bandage to unlock the games host of indie favorites. To make things even better they have been constantly updating the game for free, deliberately bypassing microsoft's standard "DLC options" just so they can give you the content.

#1

Limbo

I love indie games. I really do. The fact that they can take so many artistic risks with them means that you can often times get gems such as Limbo.

Limbo is a game that shows the true artistic potential that video games can have. In a way Limbo can be thought of as Braid's darker, moodier cousin. The game has ridiculously brain-bending puzzle challenges but never feels too difficult or frustrating. Instead you get to go through this incredible Journey of a boy trying to find his sister. There is a lot to Limbo's story (way too much to talk about here) but the smybolisim in it is excellent. Even though Limbo is easily the shortest game on the list it is the one that will probably stick with me the most.

1. Red Dead Redemption

2. Mass Effect 2

3. CoD: Black Ops

4. Limbo

5. Heavy Rain

6. God of War III

7. FIFA 10

8. Mafia 2

9. Bayonetta

10. Bioshock 2

Honorable mention

Fallout: New Vegas

Halo: Reach

Fable III

Formula 1

p4570437.jpg

2. Minecraft.

1. Mass Effect 2

2. Red Dead Redemption

Im to tired to make a list now...Ill work on it tomorrow for sure.

I didn't buy a lot of games this year (sort of, I hope it's fine to put games I bought this year, and not released this year)

Warhammer: 40k (and its expansions) - PC

- It's a good break from the usual "harvest this and harvest that" crap. Have to give them credit for making 6 distinct races. Easy but tedious campaign though (they give stupendously long objectives).

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - PC

- Was playing this for the better part of the year. It's not that great, but if you can see past its flaws, it's addicting.

Starcraft 2 - PC

- It's fun, but not worth $100 (in local currency, it's about 70 or so USD if I'm not wrong?).

Tekken 6 - PSP (get the PS3/360 version, they offer more)

- Can't wait for TTT2.

The Orange Box (Half-life 2 + episodes, Portal, Team Fortress 2) - PC

I guess I should do 1 for each game.

Half Life 2 (with ep1 and 2)

- I've never even heard of the HL games before I bought this, but it has a decent story, at the expense of a few boring but tolerable levels, thanks to findable secret stashes and stuff.

Portal

- Short and sweet.

Team Fortress 2

- To be honest, I haven't even played this game a whole lot, but it's real fun, the comical relief it provides (stupid things they do) is refreshing.

Left 4 Dead 2 - PC

- Got this from being wrongly banned from MW2. It's zombie killing. Not that noteworthy.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - PC

- Singleplayer is great (encompassing singleplayer zombies, though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that). Multiplayer is ass, but I haven't seen people complain a whole lot on consoles, so I assume they don't have that big of a problem. Lack of local dedicated servers, freezing graphics (happens in singleplayer too, maybe my card?), sudden lag. I can't recall the number of times I got frustrated when a guy killed me while I was pumping bullets into his face when in the killcam it didn't show up as anything.

Halo 2 Vista - PC

Borrowed from a friend, and it doesn't need a disc so... I kinda bought it? Games for Windows ruined it though. Would like more Halo games on the PC, but that probably won't happen unless Microsoft retires the 360.

Maybe not ten, but my favourite games of 2010 are:

A shadow's Tale

Not out in the US yet (i think), this game is pure genious. Increadbile atmosphere, a story reminiscent of team ico games, outstanding art directions, 30-40 hours long and has some devilish concieved puzzles, would definatly cut my top 25 list if it was out sooner

Donkey Kong Country Returns

I never knew what nostalgia was until DKCR showed it to me. It's increadibly hard later on and has a god multiplayer to boot. Really awesome.

Limbo

Great atmosphere, good gameplay, awesome layouts and all around a good experience.

Super Mario Galaxy 2:

Platformer perfected, even if that seems hard considering it's predecessor (which i still regard in higher grounds).

Assassins Creed Brotherhood:

I've always wanted an AC online, when AC was out i was weary at first, since it was the first time i was so itchy to try an online feature. Thankfully it worked out, and i love it.

Epic Mickey

I don't know why so many people felt disapointed by it, i mean, it's definatly not perfect (the camera is a real pain), but it features good gameplay, apart form the mention camera issues, great story and some good fan service, both for disney fans and videogame fans in general (i've actually found a zelda reference early on)

Mass Effect 2:

While i don't know why people say this is an RPG, since it kinda feels more like a third person shooter. Regardless of what it is, it's awesome, can't wait for number 3 next year. I just hoep they don't slap in an unnecessary multiplayer.

Red Steel 2

You are a samurai in the old west firing rifles wih explosing bullets against chaingun wielding ninjas.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom/SSF4

Both great fighting games, one is more over the top, the other is more classic. I really can't find the better one.

Side Note: While i bought Super Meat Boy on steam, my PC can't handle it aparently. so yeah, no very hard platformer for me until next year, donkey kong aside.

Is this just games that were released in 2010 or your general top 10 of the year?

Games that were released in 2010 preferably.

Most of the games I bought this year were from 2009 or earlier.

Pokemon HG - Pokemon Gold/Silver remake on the DS? I was sold in 2009.

Mass Effect 2 - If Bioware's facebook page is to be believed, it's winning a [cabbage]ton of awards for being awesome. I agree with them.

Fable 3 - Short but fun, and actually had an interesting story compared to 2.

Dragon Age Origins: Awakening/DLC - It's Origins but you're completely overpowered by the end of it even if you're not a mage. What's not to like? The DLC does a good job of actually expanding the game as opposed to padding it with stuff that should have been there from the start. Fable 3 wasn't so lucky in that regard.

2010 was the year that gaming tried to convert me to a Bioware fanboy. Just need to find a copy of Baldur's Gate or something now...

In no particular order.

Fallout: New Vegas

Mass Effect 2

Super Street Fight IV

God of War 3

Heavy Rain

Bioshock 2

Call of Duty 7

I didn't really play that many games that came out in 2010 but all of these game were fun.

lighviolet1lk4.jpg

I Don't think I've even played 10 new games this year. Still, I loved

STALKER: Call of Pripyat,

Amnesia: The Dark Descent,

Penumbra: Plack Plague,

Mount & Blade: Warband

And of course, Minecraft.

10. Call of Duty: Black ops.

Was an awesome shooter, and a great story line. Just kinda burnt out on shooters.

9.Split second.

Awesome arcade racer. So much fun with the game play.

8.Plants VS Zombies.

Oh my, so much fun to play when you pissed at another game.

7.R.U.S.E

Amazing RTS. So sleek and simple, yet an awesome gameplay and story.

6.Fable III

Really great ending to an overall good game. Nothing special, but still lots of fun.

5.Need for speed: Hot Pursuit.

You havn't crashed a car untill you crash a porsch at 220 MPH. so simple, yet amazing racer.

4.Golden Sun.

Oh my, one of the best RPG's for the DS. Still playing it now, and I'll never get tired of it.

3.Battle Field: Bad Compnay 2.

Maybe not the best story line ever, but dear lord the ,multiplayer was the best part. I could still be playing it if I was not bored with FPS's in general.

2. Red dead Redemption.

Ah, such an amazing game. Truely loved it, could play it over and over again.

1. Fallout: New Vegas.

By far my favorite game of the year. Such much to be done. In order to get the total packags of the game it must be played through again and again. Worth the money.

Yeah, but the person above you only cares about inherently terrible shooters.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.

I played [bleep] all new released this year.

1. Minecraft.

2. Assassin's Creed 2?

3.

I have Black Ops from christmas but haven't installed yet. SC 2 looks good. I think for PC Gaming, 2011 is looking far, far better. In 2010 we got, what, Mass Effect 2? Minecraft, Super Meat Boy? Heroes of Newerth? I mean, they are good games, but not many truly good PC exclusives were released. I suppose, though, there isn't a big market for them. Next year, though, Dragon Age: II, Portal 2, *hopefully* Diablo 3, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood will be making it to PC, and I know, a lot more.

Just my 2 cents.

lampost_sig_stark.png

I agree, next year looks very promising for mostly all platforms. I'm looking foward to ME3 and DA:2 mostly since Bioware has yet to disappoint me.

Low_C.png

Minecraft, Mount and Blade: Warband and Starcraft 2 are all the new games I've gotten last year, and they are amazing. I probaly have spent most of time time on Quake Live/Quake 3 still.

Doomy edit: I like sheep

Portal 2 won't be an exclusive I'm fairly sure. But still, I am looking forward to it greatly as well.

I second this. Portal 2 is coming to the PS3, xbox 360 and PC. Plus, i also think Dragon Age 2 will also be for the 360, but i'm not sure about that.

I'm just going to name my favorite.

Fallout: New Vegas. Though sometimes it is plagued with bugs (which will hopefully be fixed) it's still amazing. On a seperate note to anyone whose played the game, I was walking out the door at HELIOS One and as soon as I walked out Old Lady Gibson (apparently sitting in an invisible chair) appeared with 3 dogs and 2 mole rats. Lolwut?
