December 23, 200520 yr Not sure if anyones done this before but if you've ever had a filling and for whatever reason you've eaten foil (it's bound to happen through the course of your life) you get quite an extreme pain at where the filling is. I was quite curious as to why this happened and it actually works with any metallic element supposedly the filling (normally mercury) acts as a battery. The alumnium foil and the saliva in between the foil and mercury filling causes electrons to pass from the aluminum straight through the saliva because of the salts in the saliva, into the filling and straight into the nerve and as your body works upon electrical signals the brain interprets the electric signal as pain. But yeh for those of you which haven't put a metal on a filling I wouldn't recommend it, I think it might just be aluminium though and not all metals. 99 Magic, 99 Defence, 99 Strength, 99 Attack, 99 Hitpoints, 99 Fletching, 99 Woodcutting, 99 Firemaking, 99 Thieving, 99 Ranged, 99 Prayer, 99 Cooking, 99 Fishing
December 23, 200520 yr A; I've never had a filling, and B; there's never been a time where it was necessary to eat aluminum foil, but the thought of eating foil gives me goosebumps anyway. Gamertag: King Arizona
December 23, 200520 yr Ok some people I hang around with hate when people do it.. goes through them etc, for some people it hurts them because of fillings etc. For me and one of my mates, I've had 1 filling, hes had a few and it doesn't hurt us at all.. Its just a confusing subject ^^.
December 23, 200520 yr Jammy: It depends on what kind of filling, since mercury is in the silver fillings and gold fillings don't have any (from what I remember my aunt telling me) It's really annoying to eat a mass produced sloppy joe and chomp on a tiny ball of foil o.O I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
December 23, 200520 yr Im gonna try that right now. Gimme 5 mins The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. December 23, 200520 yr Well the foil was kinda hard to chew... I kinda scared I would get cut. Kinda think of it, I think I have a cut on my tongue... But other than that, I didnt feel anything. Tastes like metal... :? The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. December 23, 200520 yr I have two fillings. They're not the metallic kind though... I remember I tried chewing on foil the day after I got my first filling... and it didn't hurt... to tell you the truth, I was kinda disappointed. :(
December 23, 200520 yr EDIT-To the other posters you have to have a filling that can be used as an electrode with the aluminum. For the non metalic those are ceramics, porcelain, or some composite mixture. However the Silver ones contain a few allows such as chromium, magnesium, mercury (the one you probably have) Or Gold ones Its a simple wet cell battery Two Electrodes (Aluminum Foil, And the metal alloy in the filling (can be gold, Mercury) Electrolyte (Saliva) When you bite you bring these together and both have potential (keyword) electrochemical difference across them.Electrons are conducted two the filling and some to the nerve endings creatinga n electrical impulse intepreted as pain In other words your creating a battery in your mouth. It works much like the standard zinc carbon battery (with Sulfuric acid ()) When Zinc is inserted the acide molecules break up into ions, 2x Hydrogen (H+), and SO4(H2SO4 When zinc comes in contact the acid breaks into two ions (charged atoms) 2 Hyrdrogen(oxidation of 1+ (H+)). 1 Sulfate (oxidation of 2-(SO4--) The Zinc loses 2 electrons becoming a postive ion (Zn++) And if you remember from chemisty, you have Zn++ and SO4-- and they combine to form ZnSO4) The 2 electrons combines with the hydrogen ions to form a molecule of Hydrogen Gas (H2) Which hydrogen bubbles form. Now you have a carbon rod and you see no hydrogen bubbles form on the carbon. connect the two and now you have a path for the electrons to flow through a conductor and the electrons sent through the conductor will flow through the carbon and combine with the H+ ions by the carbon also. The reason the electrons flow is called the Voltage difference (measure in Volts) and is the force mobing the electrons. A very similar thing happens with the saline in your saliva and the two electrolytes Al and Hg (mercury) You can also form a Voltaic pile by taking a penny and soaking a piece of tissue in a water-salt (H2O, NaCl) Solution and putting a dime on the other side, you can stack these together to form a larger voltage difference or more powerful battery
December 23, 200520 yr It doesnt really hurt, its just like a weird taste. Indeed it does... -_- The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. December 23, 200520 yr I don't know about you, but I pretty much scream like a little girl when i get a bite of foil. I have pretty a lot of fillings though. Visit my DeviantArt Page at http://vladmoney.deviantart.com
December 23, 200520 yr I had a lot, but they were all on baby teeth! :D I have one on a permanent tooth though :( I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.

December 23, 200520 yr Yep It usually happens theres something like a foil wrapper on my computerdesk and if im playing runescape or something I tend to put inanimate objects in my mouth. What doesnt help is 2 fillings and I realise within a few seconds why I shouldnt eat foil, but then find myself doing it again 2 minutes later.
December 23, 200520 yr Author I think alot of newer fillings are made of glass and powedered resin these days which aren't metal at so it won't work. It will only work if it's a mercury filling against aluminium. 99 Magic, 99 Defence, 99 Strength, 99 Attack, 99 Hitpoints, 99 Fletching, 99 Woodcutting, 99 Firemaking, 99 Thieving, 99 Ranged, 99 Prayer, 99 Cooking, 99 Fishing

December 23, 200520 yr Lol i experienced this once so i did it again like a idiot cause i was curios why it happend and if it was a one of lol.
December 23, 200520 yr You should really have put a disclaimer saying you arent responsible for any pain you cause :x . That hurt. ALOT. I like to chew styrofoam more :|

December 25, 200520 yr Whenever I eat a Toblerone bar a piece of foil sneaks in and it just ruins the whole treat for me  It's quite awful, I definitely know how that feels :x By The_Jeppoz
