deleting rares... being told in advance?

Featured Replies

Although this would never happen, the best solution would be some kind of shop that BUYS your rares at current market price, (i.e. It would buy Blue P-hats for 110m or whatever), and then sells the same rares for almost nothing. But it would be like, a rare that was bought from the shop could not be sold back to it for the current market price.

Oh yeah. That's right.

[developmentally delayed]ed idea. Why delete them? That would be very unwise indeed. People save up for years just to buy one, and just because you're jealous you want to get rid of them? They actually do stabilise the economy. If rares were deleted, Dragon would just raise higher in price and so would ecverything else. Stop crying, if you want one, work hard.

Please explain why rares pose a problem to the runescape economy?? If anything they are creating a greater flow of cash and goods which is GOOD for an economy.

I have never seen a satisfactory reason as to why rares are bad except that most people cant afford them.

took the words from my mouth, even though i cant afford them its still fun to try n get enough money to.

I'll agree with every other person on this thread though. When I finally saved enough money to get an Easter, I was glad as hell, even though Easters have not changed in price since ... well, a long time. Then after I had sold that and had enough money for a Santa, I was even more psyched. Then I sold that Santa because I realized that rares serve no purpose ... except P-Hats. P-Hat prices go up by like, 4-5m a week. If you bought a Purple and then sold it back a month later, you would have made 10m probably. I think the REAL issue is that there are no more rares, so the people who joined after they were abolished will never get a chance to get them. Sure, Andrew said it wasn't fair for these people to be making millions upon millions of Gp selling these things, but it's also not fair for the people who AREN'T making millions upon millions of Gp because there are no more rares. Then again, after what happened with P-Hats, if there was another rare drop then it would takes YEARS for it to increase in price, since people would be like, "What if this turns into the next P-hat?", and stockpile hundreds of the whatevers in their banks.

Nobody ever imagined that P-Hats would be as valuable as they are today, or people would have just collected hundreds of them in their banks, and therefore they WOULDN'T be as valuable as they are.

EDIT: That isn't true, by the way. I don't like rares and I can afford any rare except for the P-Hats. Also the half-wines ...

Oh yeah. That's right.

please dont flame me strait away for this, just hear me out...

rares get a mixed bag of opinions from everybody who play this game, they make the game unique compared to other mmorpgs. many people think that the rares mess up the economy, and i agree most of these people are jelous 10 year olds who have 20gp in bank. other people believe that the rares stabilise the economy, that if they didnt exist, money would have nowhere to go, and would make everything else skyrocket in price. this may also happen, but most people who think this already own a rare, or are rich enough to afford them.

if rares were deleted strait away, many people would quit... jagex wouldnt want that, so theres not much chance of that happening... but i have quite a unique idea that id like to know what others think of:

23/1/05 Jagex will delete rares!

"Rares have become an increasing worry in the land of runescape, they continue to rise in price, and not long from now, it is entirely possible for some to be worth billions. we here at jagex have come up with an intresting solution for this increasing problem...

in exactly a years time from now, all rares in runescape will be deleted, all party hats, santas, masks, pumpkins, eggs, halfwines and disks will be wiped from everyones bank and inventory, and will never exist in the game again.

im sure we will get many complaints over this, but we believe it is one of the only ways to slowly and safely dissapate this ever-increasing problem.

thankyou."

what do you think will happen to rare prices if rares would be deleted ina year? i mean obviously the price would go down... but would there still be a demand?

please post your thoughts, or a differant way to save the economy, that everyone can understand and hopefully not flame.

Although I myself do not own a rare, and I probally never will, I am totally opposed from wiping them from the game completely. Like you said, rares are a 'coin sink', which in effect displace large ammounts of money around the economy, keeping prices from rising. If high leveled players had nothing to spend their millions on, then they'd spend excessive ammounts on raw materials, and they may be happier to pay much higher prices for these raw materials, effectively driving up the price for everybody, even for blue collered mid-high leveled players like myself. Sellers can't tell the difference from the rich and the not-so-rich. And that would be a VERY bad thing.

I do, however, think that Jagex should do somthing to keep the prices from rising. If the prices keep rising as they are, eventually only the most rich and elite players are going to be able to afford them. And if the not-so-elite players have nothing to spend their millions on because they can't quite afford any of the rares... then you can expect pretty much the same scenario as above, eventually. I think, that they should release an NPC, or have an existing NPC (preferably the Wise Old Man) sell rares at just above their current market price. Initially nobody will buy them, but as prices on rares continue to rise, some players might be happier buying it from the NPC, who isn't going to keep pricing it higher. This would in effect provide a ceiling for rare prices, and mabye if it tickles Jagex's fancy they could gradually LOWER the prices on the rares sellable by the NPCs as the market prices fluctuate below that price so that eventually some of the players a bit poorer than the ones now that can afford them can afford them. That way, the 'coin displacer' would be more effective and prices on raw materials would mabye even drop or at the very least stay the same.

i hope u get banned for posting fake crap about that, im going to send this to runescape/jagex and bann ur n00b @##!!!!!!!!1111

Sig Inspired by Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville.

I don't think P-hats don't harm the economy. People will buy them on their own free will. And, if the rares were deleted, many people would be upset after saving up so much GP just to afford it.

dragoon50sig.jpg

rares have stayed for all these years and theyll probably stay for the rest of the time... and rares do balance the economy cuz what are you goin to do wit 400 mil? buy runes?

A way to keep rares from being COMPLETELY unbuyable?

Perhaps Jagex could slowly make rares avaliable to a select group of respectable players (no lv 50 noobs with 10 gp in the bank), but stop releasing them once the price starts to change. Then wait till the price is back up to where it used to be and repeat the process? Alternatively do this to keep a steady price for certian items? Eg: add the odd santa hat to keep their value between 4 and 6 mil each.

Please dont flame me too much about this () but at least tell me your opinions.

If jagex delete's rares, i'm quitting.

As is my brother.

With 2 accounts each that's $20 a month they're losing.

As are my 14 school friends who play.

As is another 3 kids from the city. We can convince them to quit.

thats $105 a month from ONE town.

And RS ain't so popular in this town. How much do you think Jagex will lose?

I heard about this on the official rants forums. 3 out of 5 people said they would quit, either because they got ripped, cheated, or because they will have nothing to work for.

Reducing this ratio to 2/5 for the overall rs member population, assuming 500k members, 200k will quit. That's losing 1 MILLION American dollars PER MONTH. So for all you who want rares to go away, dream on.

rares are not "a threat to the rs economy"! they save it! what is the point of earning money? to buy better RARER items. thats what everyone saves money for. it rares were to be deleted many people would stop playing because there would be nothing to gain.

as for items "soon being worth billions" that wont happen. if it did the item would be traded back and forth by the 5 people in all of rs with enough money to pay each other for it. deleting rares would be one of the worst moves jagex could make.

What your talking about is sort of counting your chickens before the eggs hatch. Basicly said, you have no idea if it will be worth "xxx" money when you sell it.

but like I said before, the actual party hat item does not lose or gain any money, thus, it's realy pointless to argue about or upon that, delete.

No. I didn't buy my party hat for it to become an investment, though it

is one. I bought it because it symbolizes wealth, which in turn gets respect in the game.

And how does that saying fit in now? I know for a fact that a party hat can get to the 40 mil range. Counting my chickens after they hatched is the more proper way to say it.

If you mean when I bought the hat for the first time, then, it would've fit better.

I never said you bought it as an investment. All I was saying is you never know when the price could drop.

There's nothing bad about that. It's pretty much like playing with stocks irl.

and, yet again, where did I come off negative? The only semi-negative thing I said was the fact that those who merchent the hats end up buying them a lot, just in incresing ammounts of money, and that didn't apply to you.

I have nothing wrong against them. They are in the game. Hell, if they were a billion each, who would care? If they rise to that price it means one thing, people can and will buy it. And then the rich will just be trading in terms of a billion back and forth, for the same old thing, driving it up, but realy not getting anywhere.

Anyways, i've said this way too many times, Jagex will never remove the rares, first off. It would be a stupid idea. Rare's do not hurt (nor realy help) the economy. You say that if rares wern't so much than people would jack up the prices on other items, such as dragon stuff. Well, that doesn't work that way. Rares are discontinued, meaning, you can't get more. Unlike a normal item, say a Dragon chain, which can be found, rares can't anymore. The Dragon chain will suffer from a price drop unless it has a solid market for said item. However, rares will increse in value. Sure, some trigger times (holidays for one) increse their price, but for the most part, they steadily rise. Yeah, merchents drive this up as well, but it's pointless.

Thing is, that rares don't effect the economy either way. They don't help and they certainly don't hurt it. To remove them or not to remove them is a silly question. Keep them in, of course. If you were to remove them, nothing would change. People just... wouldn't have party hats. There would be no loss or increse of money, unless you count the few k the hat's alching value would be. Basicly, they do nothing but look good, and alterntativly are a large collectors item.

Like you said, rares are a 'coin sink', which in effect displace large ammounts of money around the economy, keeping prices from rising.

Tell me, where does money go when you buy a rare from someone? It goes to the other player, right? well then, how is it a "coin sink", the money isn't going anywhere, it isn't taking a vacation as soon as that trade is accepted, it's simply shifted to another player. If they were bought from the store for a high price, that would be a coin sink. The money will go to an NPC source, and be gone from the server. When people buy hats the server doesn't gain/lose money, it just... stays there.

Rares are equivilent in real life to the stock market. The event which you have placed before us is what's called the "crash"

Vary nice analist, i belive the same, but they should probly bring a few more rares in after as a "recovery" of the "crash", otherwise it would be like killing off quite a few merchants, and posably making many people who have saved that 80mil for a blue phat quit strait out.

Sorry mate, it's just that Scharzenneger confused me a little.

No hard feelings Shadow, i'm also agrivated because people have no idea about economics at all :/

grr i had 19 blue phats on my noob acc

geez why the hell BAN rares out of rs, just re-drop them and prices will decrease to...phats have a nice look so why completely take them out of rs

 do a new drop of phats an everyone will have one and make them untradeable and be able to get them back from some guy

 i.wub.phats

Gee, I wonder how you cat over 2billion worth of items onto a noob account ... no, of course, I'm sure you followed the rules for that. No drop trading at all.

to be honest i think its a lode of rubbish they wont delete them because that would be many people years of hard work to get the money wasted and so many people would get angry and quit ( i would ). so many people would quit and so many f2p that were going to get membership wouldnt. jegex wouldnt do it because they would lose thousands a month with people quitting.

if they do i will be sending more than one complaint. im not spinning 50k flax for nothing lol
