Actually they can see ahead when they get their "critical upgrade" which is also the upgrade that allows them to run and makes them do other useful tasks such as cutting logs for you in bridge event and lighting fire in sick people event.

The critical level varies alot:

75 for Jayene and Pazuzu which is when they get dark bow and sol/fire wave

80 for Dean when he gets bandos and whip

79 for Zachory when he gets new robes and fire blast

20 for Rolayne when he learns to run and gains the ability to fight

92 for smiddi when she gets heal other*

*Smiddi's critical level is speculative, I have personally achieved all others though, Smiddi's is assumed to be that level as it is the only true "combat" upgrade she gets and all others critical upgrade is their major combat upgrade with new equipment included. Plus checking the gen discussion thread on update people got Smiddi up to 89 with no critical upgrade yet.

This is feedback for the recently released guide.

http://www.tip.it/runescape/?page=temple_trekking.htm

The description for Smiddi needs fixing.

"Smiddi is very weak, with very low defence, and does not fight back when attacked."

Smiddi will fight back, but only when she is attacked. She appears to have auto-retaliate enabled, so if nothing attacks her she won't attack.

There is a contradiction here.

In most combat events (see journey events), the level of the person you're guiding will affect how many enemies will attack.

When you guide the hardest (weakest) people you will meet 5 enemies at most combat events.

For medium people you will meet 4 enemies.

For easiest (strongest) people you will meet only 3 enemies.

In most combat events (shade, snail, swamp snake, nail beast, ghast, juvinates), the difficulty of the path you take will affect how many enemies will attack, and how strong they are.

When you take the hardest path you will meet 5 enemies at each combat event.

When you take the medium path you will meet 4 enemies at each combat event.

When you take the easy path you will meet only 3 enemies at each combat event.

The second one is correct, it's the path that determines how many enemies attack, not the character you are escorting.

Also, in the description for the bog event, it states that you can lose your branch.

You can lose your branch in the bog, so it is advised to cut off more than one if you have room for it.

However, after 20-30 bog events while trekking earlier this week, I did not lose my branch once. Could be a bit of outdated data.

Yup as recon pointed out the paragraph right below follower table about their level effecting monsters is incorrect and outdated.

The bog no longer steals sticks either.

The smiddi and Rolayne descriptions are wrong, as pointed out Smiddi will retaliate and from lvl 20+ Rolayne does attack just like all the others; he's jsut not very strong.

Plus Roylane's level 20 upgrade needs to note it makes him fight as well

And Smiddi's lvl 99 upgrade is NOT for her. Her heal other deals no damage to her; the 99 upgrade is for the player and upgrades the heal other spell to heal more and damage less.

Also you have starred the "critical upgrade" levels in the follower table, but not explained the star below eg:

*This level is the followers critical upgrade it notes the biggest increase in their combat abilities and unlocks a few new behaviours:

  • Followers can now run
  • Followers will now engage in combat more readily (with the exception of Smiddi who engages in healing you instead)
  • Followers will light a fire for you in the campsite event
  • Followers will cut three logs for you in both variants of the bridge event
  • Followers can now see ahead, see Choosing a Route below for more details.

And a few other notes that could probably be added somewhere:

1) Pre-critical upgrade followers only retaliate or actively attack what you attack.

2) Talking to your follower in a combat event, at any level, will prompt them to actively chase down enemies

3) Food is not a 100% fail safe, if they are taking heavy damage they can still "die" and teleport out

4) If you use the "escape event" path or get disconnected the follower will be waiting for you at the sign and offer the chance to continue where you left off.

5) Followers gain experience for completing events; but it is a much slower rate than for fighting.

6) Both shortcuts can be toggled and are turned off when unlocked

7) All item rewards must be claimed by clicking on the upgrade of the character at the noticeboard (applies for toggling zachory's shortcut too)

8) Ghast reward costs 50,000gp for 1 pouch and 15 scrolls

9) Follower levels start at 1 and jump to 4,8,12,16 before continuing to level 1 at a time (eg 1st lvl up gives them 4, 2nd 8, 3rd 12, 4th 16, 5th 17, 6th 18 etc)

Handling more events results in a better reward. This means that it is very hard to get a good reward when taking the easiest route, since you simply will not get many events. Dealing with a combat event is worth more than dealing with a non-combat event. The hard route is more likely to give the maximum rewards. You may get the maximum reward on the other routes too, but the chances are smaller simply because you will not face as many difficult events.

Bold bit: This is also inaccurate; the number of events is entirely random. I've had all easy roads go on for 5 or 6 events while I've had hard only routes last 1 or 2 events. Going hard is no guarantee of a longer trek.

Italic bit: Also sort of inaccurate, by watching follower levels it is clear the campsite event gives a massive amount of xp and thus is giving more than combat events. Would be better to clarify Combat events usually lead to better rewards, and even then i'd doubt its truth. My rewards seem pretty balanced some skill events add a lot to reward eg campsite while some combat events eg vampyres and vyrewatch and boat monster add very little as the follower does nothing.

Underline bit: Rather misleading again, follower level/tier plays a huge factor it's fairly common to get red rewards on the easy route with Smiddi and Roylane into the mid 20s and equally in the early levels even Pazuzu and Dean can give the odd red on easy. Conversely at 80-99 on hard route Pazuzu and Dean often give blue and the odd yellow but almost never red; maxed out even Jayene and Zachory are skimpy on the reds on hard routes.

Also that entire paragrpah seems oddly placed, jsut sort of wedged in under the hints for no good reason.

Just wanted to add that the bog can still steal sticks, but the chance for it to happen is obscenely, obscenely low - I have 4 characters maxed, Rolayne at 42, Smiddi at 62, and I've only lost a single stick so far. I would wait on more confirmation, however - I'm the only one saying it's possible versus two who say it isn't, so I may be incorrect, although I'm quite positive I lost a stick at one point.

Other comments...

For the snelm/giant snails event section, I believe it would be smart to include a comment saying that the snelm isn't as good at protecting you against the attack of the hard route (level 139) snails - they tend to max at about 60-70 for me with near perfect accuracy still, so it may be better to just pray ranged against the hard path ones. Easy/medium path ones are fine for snelm usage (easy ones max at maybe 1-10, medium maybe up to 25, it's extremely low).

I'd recommend adding some form of teleport to the suggested gear section as well - house tabs, for instance, if you have an altar and a portal back to Canifis is nice, plus it acts as a just in case you do end up nearly dying and having to teleport out mid event (which is fairly rare, I would think).

I'd also recommend adding in - either to the recommended gear or to the campsite event description - to bring stackable food of some sort - a sack of potatoes is what I personally use for campsite events - the campers will take any sort of edible food from what I've seen.

Maybe add a comment under the juvinates/vyrewatch descriptions saying that none of the NPCs will attack them, due to the monster's immunity to everything except silver/flail would be a good idea - I saw a number of people asking about this in HYT over the past few days. They likely will auto retaliate against them, however - I personally have not seen a juvinate or vyrewatch attack my follower yet since the update, but the possibility is likely still there.

Small error in the shade event description - the villagers can heal your LP, boost your combat stats, or refill your prayer points - when they restore LP/prayer, they seem to do so to full. When they boost my combat stats, I end up with 108/99 for melees, and 102/98 for mage, along with 102/93 for range. What they choose to restore/boost is completely random - you can easily get all three restoring the same thing in one event. I also noted that attracting the shades to you sometimes isn't enough - I had one attacking me but still managing to destroy a door/kill a villager from several squares away - this is likely a glitch, but I make sure to hit each shade once before I proceed to killing them all.

The aggression for snails is extremely... random, to say the least. Sometimes when I hit one they'll stay aggro on me, other times they lose aggro entirely and wander off to be attacked by my follower and aggro back onto them instead. I'm unsure what causes this. Just a note, since snails are one of the ideal events to powerlevel your NPCs - so long as they're attacking you, anyway. Snails also have a higher health regen than normal - you can see this quite clearly if you have a lower level Zachory Bragg attempting to kill one on a medium path - he won't be able to do it because they just heal that fast.

Vyrewatch have the same aggression issue as snails, they occasionally just stop attacking and fly away. Just a random note, it's not needed for the guide or anything.

For the other events...

The Bridge event seems to be about 50/50 if it'll have undead lumberjacks or not - I never really kept track of the % difference since I have 2 sets of the clothes already :P I will note, that you won't always get a piece of clothing per event - it's a really high chance you'll get one, but not always. I've had a couple events where I don't get any pieces.

Overall, it's a good guide. I'd love to see some more strategies listed, though - recommended gear/inventory screenshots, how to level up your NPCs the faster way (meatshield/tanking while they kill), and such would be nice. A section for choices in familiars to take for trekking would also be nice - I personally use a yak so I can carry more snakeskin/nail beast nails and not bank as often, but others may wish to take combat familiars instead, particularly if they're looking for sheer speed.

Temple Trekking is likely my favorite minigame, so I am really interested in helping wherever I can :) If you need screenshots of certain things (gear setups and the like) I could upload a screenshot or just list off what I normally take if that's preferable. Anything I can do to help.

Just a note to say I've got all levels as you other than 31 roylane and 41 smiddi and I have had a lot of bogs without a single branch lose.

But yeah rest of what you say is good stuffs too, hopefully crew come by here soon to sort out the guide that kinda has a lot of flaws/lack of info atm.

Oh and couple more detail to add that would be handy:

The message about firm/soft in bog event comes up quite early in the animation but the animation takes ages. If you have use branch ready once this message has appeared you can click another spot (further into the bog if firm or beside you if soft) to get the second test completed instantly with no animation.

Druid pouch is not strictly necessary any more, other than food wastage, as the followers all carry one and expose ghasts for you.

And vampyre events talking to follower:

You're alone on this one. I have no weaponry to deal with these. Sorry!

So yeah they don't attack, and the vampyres seem to leave them alone too, followers also don't attack the boat monster and lumberjacks.

Skeletons in the graveyard also seem to be ignored.

All these monsters equally ignore followers.

Graveyard also worth noting the holy energy radius reaches to 1 square outside the central fence

Nope. This has happened to me twice. You can lose your branch. Happened on the hard routes on both occasions, so might be depending on the difficulty of the trek.

No. I've had 50-60 bog events pretty evenly split easy med hard, not a single branch lost; safe to say difficulty is not a factor in rarity.

i also have had a single stick lost in all the time ive played since the update. it is unlikely that it will ever happen to many players but it is still an Extremely Remote possibility. you could pretty much put it as a side note rather than a main part of a guide, but as ive said it is still in the game. given it is so unlikely that they might as well remove it entirely...

And Smiddi's lvl 99 upgrade is NOT for her. Her heal other deals no damage to her; the 99 upgrade is for the player and upgrades the heal other spell to heal more and damage less.

I can confirm this.

I have Smiddi to level 99 and my heal other spell effects are increased although it is hard to tell with just 1 cast.

However, after a few rounds of friend healing it became quite noticeable as he was restored to full hp and even I healed a bit from the 160-180 we both started with.

More testing will likely be required to understand the full effect of the upgrade

In the guide it says: "As long as you don't teleport out of the game, all foods that were unused are automatically transferred to the next companion, so nothing goes to waste!" This should add that if you gave the person much food and it gets attacked by many monsters at the same time and uses its ring of life while still having food left the food is gone the next time you talk to them. This happened to me only once so I am not 100% sure.

Edit:

At the shades event it states that a gadderhammer is very effective, I tried using it, but a normal dragon scimmy is already much better. Also it says that on some routes you encounter people in the houses, shouldn't that be on all routes? I am 100% sure that on the medium routes you have always 3 people there and the times i did the easy route I also saw them every time. Also it may be nice to add that they sometimes boost the same stat (two of them boosting prayer, or all three of them boosting your combat stats etc.).

Edit again:

I can confirm about loosing the branch in the bog, I even have a screenshot if needed. It doesn't need to be at a hard route because I lost it on a medium one.

Also there seems an additional reward missing at the far end of the page. The shortcut from zachory (level 99) It is mentioned by Zachory on the page though but not at the end of the page.

Bumping this as the guide on site still includes many errors and lacks info on various things (all of which this topic covers nicely) and its been weeks now with no fixes to certain MAJOR issues (eg the paragrpah about follower level effecting number of enemies which is just completely wrong)

I also would like to mention about the requirements list it includes things like a knife but doesn't about a tinderbox (which is less easy to get then a knife in the minigame)

And about what Sy said, it is the route you take that makes the difference in enemies. Medium gives 3-4 enemies, easy gives 2-3 enemies and I don't know about hard. It doesn't matter who you take with you.

And the vyrewatch and juvinates info should be updated with the new weapons

Hoping to see this updated soon.

Here is one description that is not yet in the guide (first time I saw it also and I am nearly finished with this minigame so it is not strange this one has slipped through).

It was as you can see the middle route:

[hide]schermafbeelding2011090y.png[/hide]

It were the vyrewatches at the mort myre gate.

Also worth mentioning is that Smiddi Ryak uses the heal other spell while not hurting herself with it.

Edit: Got the event now a second time and got Juvinates on it.

How have you all been? Feels like its been forever since I wrote/contributed to a guide. Here is a useful guide for figuring out whether you get easy/med/hard reward. I saw this on RSOF, but haven't verified it independently. NOTE: My changes are all in brackets [ ].

Trek rating - What is it?

QFC: 98-99-498-62916988

Trek rating determines how much of a reward you get. The greater your trek rating (Maximum 100 [points]) the greater the reward. Trek rating is awarded per event. If no Trek rating is received (No events are completed and are skipped) you will just receive 4 [points]. Trek rating [points]:

A friendly events gives NO trek [points].

Lumberjack events give NO trek [points].

Bridge, bog and river events give around 5 to 8 trek [points].

The hardest path swamp monsters adds 50 [points].

The hardest path skeletons are assumed to add about 25 [points].

The rest work as following:

Easiest path:

Base of 8 add 4 per follower difficulty.

Easy Follower: 12 [points].

Medium Follower: 16 [points].

Hard Follower: 20 [points].

Medium path:

Base of 15 add 8 per follower difficulty.

Easy Follower: 23 [points].

Medium Follower: 31 [points].

Hard Follower: 39 [points].

Hard path:

Base of 28 add 14 per follower difficulty.

Easy Follower: 42 [points].

Medium Follower: 56 [points].

Hard Follower: 70 [points].

SneakoS' guide also claims that there can between 1 and 5 events per trek and that the actual number of events is determined randomly. In addition, the guide didnt include the breakdown of how many points it takes to get each reward, so additional testing would need to be done to determine how many points you need for a blue/yellow/red reward.

Thanks,

Bits and peices have been used, but as I re-iterated in a newer thread about vyres + blisterwood lot hasn't including some of the very worst inaccuries.

eg it STILL has a paragrpah saying follower effects enemies on the route which it categorically DOES NOT

Some bits that have been used, but easily overlooked:

Above people table it now says what the star is and what they gain at this point.

Skele event now mentions radius of the blast

Mentions companions will not attack vyres as they lack silver weapon

mentions companions can make ghasts visible

I think I'm going to make an AoW that covers strategies more in-depth and the rewards. I'm nearing 99 with all followers now (like 20 total levels left) and at that point I'll start experimenting with rewards and and clear times. Anyone think they would be interested in helping out with data and the like?

  • 1 month later...

I've updated the guide with as much information as I could gather from this thread and my personal experience. Things to still look into are:

  • Does it matter what type of food you give your companion? I'd like to know if using cheap cabbages or onions has the same effect as using rocktails or tuna potatoes. Has any research been done on this already? If so, what were the results?
  • How exactly are the rewards calculated? I've seen the guide SneakoS made on the RSOF, but I wonder where those numbers he mentions come from. Are those perhaps numbers that were valid during the 'old' temple trekking mini-game?

As always, comments are appreciated, even if it may take a while for them all to be processed properly.

They do seem to heal proportional to the food given up to a certain point (around shark/swordfish area I think).

Second one gonna be a nightmare to work out, I've not seen any guide that could produce anything substantial in terms of proof/reasoning behind its numbers.

Side bar: bullet point list of rewards at bottom item 2-6 seem to lack the pre-colon bolding the rest have. Plus in 100 total levels Paterdomus and Nature Grotto need capitalising.

Thanks for the insight. The errors you mentioned have been fixed. The rest needs some thorough research first. Thanks for the input.
