Well...I suppose because it is different from pornography...

It is not, for example, pornographic to draw the male member on a text book...Doing so would be unenforcable.

Therefore laws are required to cover the industrial distribution of sexual images that are not photographic, but are not doodles either...one assumes.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

I'm just sayin' there's no society where there wont be one poor pereson. There are many reasons for this.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

There are many societies that don't have a poorest person...typically when hardship affects everyone then the idea of being 'better' than other people fades into general survival.

Also when there is no one way to harvest food and always be productive...As then one year you might have a plentiful supply, the next year you have nothing...So any 'wealth' is transient, and you are depending on the goodwill of others when your crops fail.

Ultimately any society like that breaks down because one person works out a clever way round the problem of transient wealth...for example giving someone a contract which states 'If I feed you this year then I own your land and you pay me 10% from now on' and then some clever method of enforcing said contract...Thus meaning they are rarely affected entirely, allowing them to grow.

Direct exploitation works too.

The same is true in communistic systems, as there will always be someone who is either more intelligent, stronger, faster or more adept at something than anyone else...thus they get a little fame...For example, in the Tavern we are a communistic setup...none of us gains anything but enjoyment and education.

But if I so chose (and was skilled enough), I could run Dungeoneering, Space and Hegemony games and monopolise moderating in the Tavern(I wouldn't, not even I have that much time and will power)...Then, people who didn't like the way I ran my games(so long as the majority supported me) would be forced to endure my systems or be cast out(akin to poverty in the economic example).

A lack of strong inclination...by anyone...prevents this from happening.

In the same way a 13th century village, with the alternate years of starvation and plenty, has no real incentive to expand or reorganise...Every year everyone survives...The people who don't end up dying on one of the bad years because they hacked everyone else off.

Nowadays we have a hard time getting our heads round concepts like that because of the 'WIN' mentality...the idea that if you aren't screwing them then they have to be screwing you, and every second you let them take advantage the more likely you are to 'lose'.

But hopefully the tavern example demonstrates how even in today's world purely communistic endevours exist and function without the need for a 'poor' person role.

One of the interesting points of law around this subject is that if a kid take a picture of themselves and distributes it, it is still classed as child abuse, even if they do it without any influence from anyone else.

So they prosecute the child for abusing themselves...

It is/was the only crime, other than suicide, where the state dictates what you can do with your own body.

Though I think that is out of date, since Tounge Bifurcation(I love the word) is illegal in some areas, abortion too, probably, idk.

On subject...

No. Frankly the level of flesh and crap out there is already too high...When I am waiting for a train I don't want three posters looking aluringly(SP) at me, with females covered in nothing but a handful of rose petals...I don't want to listen to ten year olds talking about how terrible their parents are for not buying them a playboy bunny outfit for their birthday. I especially don't want to constantly have girls thrusting barely contained chestlet at me.

Seriously...If you want to waste your life in front of a computer screen in your own home(Irony senses tingling) watching girls, guys, animals, cartoons, whatever going at it, then fair enough...But do you really need more? Does EVERY newsagents need to stock two dozen different magazines on the subject?

I know we are morally corrupt as a speices, but can we at least have a modicum of dignity...If we are still around a hundred years from now, I wonder how much further we will have fallen? If Earth will not just be a brothel for some Alien race we have sold out to...

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

In America, if a kid takes a picture of themselves and distributes, it's usually classified as Child Pornography (same as like exploiting five year olds or something).

And Abortion is pretty much illegal late in the pregnancy, except for extreme cases.

Because of quote limits the first couple of quotes by Mather are simply orange text, anyway I have decided to evaluate his system.

I shall now do my best to create a perfect society.

The most important part would be to make sure poverty is not a problem, for this money would be distributed by the government.

Most people wouldnt put this at the top of there priority list, there are places like new york where there is little support for people living in poverty however businesss prevail due to there efficiency. I may sound amoral but my point is relevant; if people in poverty hinder the efficiency of a city what is the point of their existence?

Im not disagreeing with what you are saying however if you wish to do this the efficiency of your city or country may be hindered.

-People are paid based on the physical or mental work required by the job, meaning theoretical physicists and construction workers are among the highest paid people.

I completely agree with this, this solves the issue of not having enough laborers yet it doesnt punish the intelligent. In a perfect society the theoretical physicist is equal to the laborer.

-Anyone physically and/or mentally incapable of working will be given a grant depending on the severity of their condition.

I agree with this to an extent but this can be abused extremely easily. A women who acquired cerebral palsy due to lack of oxygen at birth managed to receive seven million pounds out of the national health service.

-Anyone unwilling to work will be given a minimum grant.

I would replace this with food coupons, alternatively a prison sentence.

-While companies may have leaders their income goes to the government and a percentage goes to the leadership of the company.

Agreed, this system would be helpful for everyone.

-Gambling is permitted but only with up to 10% of one's monthly income or 5% of one's fortune.

I like this idea; it would be extremely useful in your society due to the way money is handed out and such. People get addicted to gambling; if the government imposed sanctions then people would be less inclined to do so.

-The police is permitted to carry equipment based on the tier of the crime.

this is a good system, it prevents weapon abuse which happens in America frequently where police are permitted to carry guns and Tasers.

--Tier one: Mugging, vandalism and unarmed assault: Batons, mace and Tasers.

Straight away there is excessive force. What you havent actually thought about here is that police quite often abuse their weapons; many brawlers become police just so they can have a big fight. I really dont understand why vandalism requires police to have a Taser.

This is one example of Taser abuse:

--Tier two: Unarmed robbery and gang-assault: Tier one equipment, beanbag guns and baton guns.

I completely agree, this is the right tool for the job.

--Tier three: Armed assault: Tier one and two equipment, handguns and Kevlar vests.

Police dont need guns to apprehend a criminal; I know that it is common to believe that equal force must be required however dont you think that a more efficient system would be to ban firearms like in Britain? This effectively removes the threat of armed assault. Police need Tasers on this occasion.

--Tier four: Armed robbery and murder: Tier one-three equipment and shotguns.

Same as above.

--Tier five: Bank robbery and multiple homicides: Tier one-four equipment, bullet-proof vests, assault rifles and snipers.

Bank robberys dont require the state to kill them, if there is a hostage situation then snipers may be necessary but the most powerful weapon is a voice.

--Tier six: Terrorism: Whatever force necessary*, backup from military forces. (*Collateral damage is to be prevented at all costs)

This is basically a good excuse for the state to take libertys.

-Prisons are divided into the same tiers.

--Tier one: Six months sentence.

--Tier two: Nine months sentence.

--Tier three: Twelve months sentence.

--Tier four: Five-ten years sentence.

--Tier five: Thirty years-lifetime sentence.

--Tier six: Death row.

A civilized society does not murder people. If a person is in prison they are just as deadly as a person dead; thus the death penalty can only be in revenge.

-Weapons are publically available.

Why?

There is no need for them to be publically available, you will counter a lot of shootings if you simply ban guns like we have done in Britain.

--Weapons must be carried and stored only in locked metal, ABS or carbon fiber casing and may be taken out only for cleaning and maintenance or to be used at a certified firing range.

Good

---Any weapons improperly encased will be confiscated and bought by the police on behalf of the government.

--Any illegal weapons will be simply confiscated, the owner will receive a fine.

Agree

Then there are the miscellaneous things that make out the normal day.

-During the second stage of education (middle school) a councilor will help the students find their best skills and help them decide on a job that would fit both their interests and capabilities.

This is a fantastic idea, it would be easy to implement and would generally just improve life for everyone.

-Tobacco is banned, marijuana is permitted and no drinks may contain more than 20% alcohol.

Marijuana should be banned, its addictive, creates psychological problems and just creates a general group of potheads. Agree on the alcohol thing.

--One must be 16 to drink alcohol or smoke marijuana but one must be 18 to buy it.

Personally I disagree, I see no reason for a sixteen year old to drink or smoke. By saying this you are encouraging young children to create a problem for general society.

-One may legally view hentai after the age of 13 and other pornography after the age of consent; 16.

I agree with the age of consent thing but drawn pornography is just as bad as standard pornography, what you are saying is ridiculous and it will encourage a boom in the hentai industry.

--There are no rules for drawn pornography, but no real pornography may contain actors under the age of 18.

By letting people draw young children in sexual acts you are encouraging it, almost saying it is ok to do. This could be interpreted the wrong way.

As you said, a person that is in prison for life is essentially as dangerous as a dead person. However, imprisonment costs a huge amount of money.

I think I remember hearing a quote about the fact that execution actually costs more, I don't know how its possible but I'm sure that someone else would know more about it.

Edit: Rocco's got it.

Retech,

I don't want to make a personal attack against you but you have basically said that it would be better to kill somebody to save money then keep them alive, people don't want to die.

What could be potentially be a better system is letting ALL people out on parole with an extension attached to there ankle, this would monitor location, heart rate and adrenaline. If a surge is noticed in heart rate or adrenaline and if they are in an area they shouldn't be then a camera will monitor what is happening. If something bad is happening then a high power electrical charge will incapacitate the person on parole.

This ankle monitor will stay with them for the remainder of there sentence.

Archi, there's a difference between legal and on TV, if you don't want it then just don't search for it, easy as that.

Yes, walking around train stations with my eyes closed, that sounds like a recipe for success

Practically speaking any form of society that uses written laws is fundermentally flawed.

1) Laws are like spiderswebs, they catch poor houseflies, but are torn to shreds by rich lions.

2) The Law is open to interpretation.

3) People lie.

Not using written laws also leaves you in a fundermentally flawed situation.

1) The judgement maker can be brought.

2) The Law is entirely subjective.

3) People lie.

It is, thus, that regardless of what system of law you use, it will fail because:

1) Money will destroy law

2) People interpret things differently

3) People misled people for advantage.

Thus, the problem is greed, difference and fear.

...And we wonder why crime figures are so high in a Capitalist, Multi-Cultural, and Unforgiving world...

Sentencing and such...WWND, the only answer.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

People don't want to be imprisoned but we do that anyways. Also, I was not suggesting that we would use the US legal system. Get rid of appeals and just imprison them. If any new information is found that could acquit, a panel of three judges can look to see if there is enough new evidence to merit a new case. An alternative would be the following:

A) Family + Friends must pay for the imprisonment of the life-sentenced inmate

or

B) Execution following ten years imprisonment (so that if they discover any information that acquits the person, then they can let em go)

----

Another option would be exile, which the Russians did particularly well. If one does not deserve to live in society, then make sure that they get no benefits from the society or harms the society. Exile removes them from society and prevents them from reaping its benefits. It would not cost society more than the cost for a small backpack of rations and tools (like a hundred bucks maybe), and if they are found to be innocent at a later date, they can come back to the society if they choose.

We shall put the prisoners on ELBA!

A) Horrible idea, imagine if your mother was accused of something and was carted off for life imprisonment.

Or your son...

B) Worst of Both Worlds, Best of Neither?

Exiles = Terrorists.

Yeah, I like the exile idea better. And A and B were supposed to be a choice thing.

Actually, this reminds me of an idea that I had from before. Prison factories! Prisoners pay for their imprisonment through hard labor.

Untrue. The kind of hard labor is no longer practiced (or very sparsely practiced) in the Western world, because wages have increased. It would take jobs from third world countries.

Basically the economic advantages are great for hiring these prison workers. The labor is cheap, the transportation costs are negligible (within regions, rather than across the world), and it would fix the present prison cost crisis.

The balance of trade is already destroyed. That is why countries like China have lined their pockets already.

That is also untrue in a sense. Prison riot = Prisoners not working = No food for the prisoners to eat

In the end, we wouldn't lose GDP compared to the death penalty (loss of GDP due to loss of the prison workforce though) because the prisoners have not been contributing in the first place. It would save on welfare costs, social security, education, and prison costs. Essentially an overall wealthier and more secure society.

It is true the economy would shrink, but not compared to the number of people. Individuals would not feel much of a difference.
