Thought of the Day August 29, 2013: A lot of people bash the United States for various reasons (poor healthcare, high crime, etc.) then why do so many people want to become American? I don't mean people who live on a similar level to the US, I mean people from countries where oppression and violence are common. They don't normally go, "I totally want to live in the UK one day"

Tell that to the immigrants we get here :P. Plenty of people come to Europe every day. Where you go, as immigrant, depends on what historical connections you have, the languages you speak and what countries you know to be good.

I think people are attracted to the US because the US has better marketing than Europe. By my estimation, Hollywood is more pro-US than the European cinema is pro-EU, and Hollywood is of course a much bigger distributor of movies anyway. US visibility in the Middle East and in any conflict area makes it a prime goal for anyone who is opposed to whatever the US is fighting at a given time. The US also does have more jobs available, I think, so that helps.

Also, conservative/religious people (anyone against gay marriage, abortion, premarital sex and/or 'socialism', anyone in favour of the death penalty/corporal punishment, creationism/unscientific eduction/not recognizing global warming, racism, sexism, anti-Semitism and/or social Darwinism) may be more attracted to the US than NW Europe. North-western Europe is a lot friendlier (less conservative) than most of the US, only California and NY and such can really match that. But if you're not into the friendly non-conservative thing, maybe Texas is a good place to go (guessing that from my definition of conservative, they are more common than progressives).

In the US, conservatives tend to be people over 50 (the Baby Boomer generation and older) who retain the values of previous generations. Generation X (late 70s/early 80s) and Millenniums (80s/90s) tend to be more progressive on social/scientific issues. It all depends on how you talk to though but as a general rule of thumb younger people are generally more accepting. Of course as you mentioned it can also vary widely by state, the South/Midwest (Texas, Alabama, Arizona, etc) tend to be more conservative while the North/East tends to be more progressive excluding California, Oregon and Colorado. :P Religion tends to be a good indicator of how conservative a person is for obvious reasons (religions has an opinion almost everything).

Thought of the Day September 3, 2013: Assuming that almost all of the population knows that smoking is bad (causes cancer etc) then why do people still smoke? Excluding people over 50ish who started before research proved smoking caused cancer.

Well, I know exactly one person who smokes (well enough to know), and she claims she'd rather be relaxed by the smoking and die sooner, than stressed out and live longer. That there are other ways to relax that are less destructive is, I suppose, too clever. Or maybe relaxing through smoking is just easy (but there are cheaper drugs for that, right?).

Of course there is always the mistake with this kind of questions, that is, the assumption that humans are rational :P (incidentally also why lots of economic theories don't work).

This.

In my personal experience, people don't stop smoking because it is bad for them, they stop smoking because it keeps them from getting something else they rather have. Both my grandmother and mother smoke, and the time they tried to stop for their health has failed. However, it might change this time as my uncle has a baby boy both my grandmother and mother adore, and want to see often (like have him come over to our house while my uncle and aunt go out for the night).

By that logic she would die sooner from stress anyway :P Smoking also has the advantage of being legal compared to other things.

For my mother-in-law, she started smoking at 14 or something because her brother started her on it. Every time she tried to quit somebody died (coincidence) which of course made quitting difficult and then she would relapse. It's interesting how people start though.

Do your aunt and uncle not allow smokers around their child or something?

Edit: wait, not directed at me. Still...

My grandfather died of smoking quite horribly (before I was born, euthanasia wasn't common then) which caused my grandmother to quit smoking very quickly. I think that might have discouraged most of the family from smoking (my mother absolutely detests it, as do I, we have the same lungs >.>).

Apparently another reason to smoke is that it keeps your weight down.

No. It's like their own self imposed rule or something. My uncle doesn't have a problem with their smoking and I think at least our immediate family is close. Also we live near by my uncle (like 4 blocks away) so having my baby cousin come over is not a problem. She just decided to try to stop or smoke significantly less. I remember her saying "I don't Lil Corey coming over then say Auntie's house smell like smoke." Now our apparent doesn't because she's not THAT bad of a smoker but I dunno. She said she's gonna stop smoking. I have yet to see it happen, but my mother has smoked a little less this summer.

Maybe it's actually the price a pack of her favorites that help...

Interesting, it's probably a combination of both. Also people tend to want to do better for the next generation, i.e. be a better role model.

Smoking suppresses hunger, that's why it keeps weight down (coffee does the same).
