In-game map changes: good or bad?

In the heat of the double quest and glitchy botany bay update we might forget that there was also a change in the in-game map.

The black squares (still visible in the tip-it map downloads) are gone and eges of certain areas look smoother now.

But does this destroy the possibilities that these black areas gave on the map expansion?

For example: now we know the posion waste is not that big, the desert stops shortly south of menaphos/sophanem, and the area east of piscatoris and north of priffdinas is just coastal, nothing more. South of MA the map also just rounds back to oo'glog.

What do you guys think of this? No more map expansions like in the past (like gu'thanoth -> feldip hills -> oo'glog over several years)?

Is it sad or a good thing now the map finally looks a bit 'complete'?

Thank you in advance for your input!

Wozzels

p.s.: show the elven crystal city prifdinnas already! It's so long overdue it's unbelievable...

They could just expand the land or drop a mass into the sea if they wanted to add more to the game map :P

Chances are, now that they've filled in various cities (Priffdinas, Sophanem/Menaphos, Meiyerditch, the Poison Waste - Aprosandra etc), they'd be more likely to have a design plan in place for those areas and we might see progress on them soon.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Q: Now that the borders of the world are filled, which were once very much speculated, will the new places be used for actual content? Also, are these all the expansions to the main land that will happen?

Mod Engstrom: Come on, we can’t tell you all our secrets! We felt that it was important to give the map a ‘finished’ look, but that doesn’t mean the map can’t change...

wozzels, I'm only going to say this once... Watch and see, because we all know the map has hit the fan in the past... hard. :geek:

With the update, the black boxes around icons on the minimap returned for me :(

In the lastest Q&A we were actually told that work on areas like Priffdinas haven't even been started yet so I don't know if that theory is correct. Still, we can dream we'll one day see Priffdinas. One day. @_@

Off Topic: I ran out of likes or I would like that post, Kimberly.. at this rate I fear it will not happen :c

On Topic: The map can always change later. This way it looks complete and less rough... but they've changed whole "completed" areas before for things like city reworks and tutorial updates...

Who says they have to extend landmass to add content?

They could always start a new island.

Or a new continent.

Called SolomonLand

On a more serious note, tectonic activity or sea level changes can increase the size of the land. Relax.

Jagex: Sorry folks, due to recent global warming, sea levels have risen and inundated Priffdinas as well as the Eastern Lands. All the inhabitants perished and the cities will never be shown.

Or, you know, a good old-fashioned retcon. I'm pretty sure they've done that in the past.

Yeah, they have... several times already... and they're still doing it... scary stuff. :boohoo:

Unavoidable, considering the medium, and usually for the best. Look at Al Kharid for the positive effects of that sort of thing, where they replaced a fairly bland "save the prince" quest with one that expands on existing lore.

How long have they been working on the Eastern lands for now? 4 years? That's the problem with this game they don't release 'expansions' just updates randomly, which allows them to get away with putting stuff off for as long as they please. It's really disappointing that this game never really see's new cities or new territory. IMO Jagex's priorities aren't where they should be.

They've also used tectonic activity to explain the appearance of the god wars dungeon.

Point is, they've got so many ways to add in new land (new islands, new lands, retcon, natural phenomenon) that there's no need to be worried about it.
