VPN program useage

Recommended Posts

Ok so unless you have been living under a rock then yu know a lot of players use VPN's specifically for very easily AFKable things such as firemaking, harps, woodcutting, mining, etc. I specifically use them to do my crystal tree, dragon maw, ports and spins daily. Ironically I stopped a few days ago because ive been hooked on this summoners war phone game. But normally you could see me log in using the free version of teamviewer to access my computer and do my dailies after reset.

Now what I noticed recently is a lot of people posting on reddit about this recieving bans. Some people are saying certain free VPN's are what gold sellers have been using and this is what has been tripping the botwatch.

So now what I'm asking is what the players think? What does jagex have to say about these recent bans? A while back jagex was aware of player useage of VPN's. They seemed to express no concern for VPN use through their lack of reaction to players queries on the subject.

So what i am doing is creating a seperate topic for this to prevent discussion flow on other threads. I am also charging everyone here to share information on this and to post relavent links and information here.

Thanks for your concern and cooperation.

I say good job for spreading awareness and would advise others to discontinue use of a VPN indefinitely until Jagex gets their act together and forms a coherent response/way of dealing with these. Otherwise, if something does happen, it will be harder to get it fixed. Have no JMods responded to any of these alleged bans for VPNs?

They have made some vague unrevealing responses in the past regarding mostly account safety. Their main concern at the time seemed to be a breach in their authenticator system. Players who have set their authenticator for their computer for the thirty days are technicallt vulnerable if someone hacks their VPN. They'll no doubtably make a response in kind to this.

Player queries have beem largely based around whether it breached any rules. Most of them being around the 1:1 rule.

I think you misunderstand what a VPN actually is. A VPN is different from remote access software.

Everyone wants to be a tech guru.. The both do the same thing. The big issue is jagex doesnt like players masking their whereabouts. Thats the downside to VPNs.

Regardless of what VPN you are using it is apparently an issue with jagex.

They do not do the same thing. And understanding why they are different is critical in understanding the situation as a whole.

Well then please let us know what they do and the differences. I've delved into them a bit and it seems as they do. I could be wrong, but please for the sake of the community please enlighten us.

I don't know the specifics as to how both function on a technical level, but to put it simply, a VPN functions sorta like a proxy, in that you connect to the internet through it and it shows as you accessing the internet via that VPN, rather than accessing the internet via your actual address.

TeamViewer (or any other remote access software) just controls your computer from a different device, but the game still very much runs on your own computer at home.

If you use a VPN to play the game, Jagex will see you as connecting through that VPN.

If you play the game normally, without a proxy, without a VPN, then Jagex sees you as playing from your regular IP address at home.

If you use TeamViewer to control the game from a different device, then you're still connected to the game from your regular IP address at home.

Reason why they ban people who play through certain VPNs is because gold farmers would connect through a VPN in order to hide that they are playing from China. They know that, so they go the lazy way and assume that anybody playing through a VPN is a gold farmer trying to hide that they are playing from China.

I'm not entirely sure if they would ban people who connect through any VPN though, surely if you have access to your own, private VPN, you would be safe, since gold farmers use the free VPNs you can find on the first page of Google search results. If you were using one of those free VPNs, then they'd probably assume you're one of them, but if you have your own VPN or are paying for access to a private VPN, they'd probably see you're different. I don't know if I would risk it though.

I see now... I'm not trying to be salty lol.

I always saw them both as the same thing, but one as a different more extensive type. I saw stuff like teamviewer as VPNs and the others more as "proxy servers." I don't know why they are both called VPNs though.

Hey, @Urza285, any chance you could provide a link to the Reddit thread you're speaking of?  Nobody can easily check it and pick up on what you're talking about if you don't!

Go to the runescape reddit, show the newest posts and you'll see a couple threads talking about it. I dont really feel like hunting down all of them.

I've been living under a rock in regard to Social Media such as Reddit.  (I'm probably not the only one.)  Can you at least provide a link to the top level of the RuneScape Reddit, as I'm rather certain I can't find my way there on my own? :(

So you make a topic based on faulty understanding/knowledge of how technology works, and then refuse to back up your claim?

To be honest, I don't see asking for a link as an unreasonable request. The whole point of forums is to have a discussion and inquire/share different information, after all :P. It's not like each topic is a doctoral thesis to be defended and needs a bunch of precise citations to raise a valid point. And for the record, I don't know off-hand how to find the RuneScape subreddit. I'm sure I could figure it out, but you get the idea.

Anyway, getting back to the discussion at hand, I guess I can see the point. Gold farmers use these as proxies to do their business and Jagex sort of takes the easy route out in blanketing them all rather than looking through on a case-by-case basis. Hopefully they'll come to their senses and either review them more thoroughly or at least tell players that they are not allowed/not advised to use a VPN!

Honestly that would be very disappointing, a quick/lazy fix, and essentially the same thing they are already doing, just now making the blanket official.

Gold farmers use them for illegitimate purposes but don't ruin it for normal players. If they ever come out with a mobile/tablet friendly version (html?) VPN's wouldn't be needed anyway.

I still think it would be better for people to be properly informed that such-and-such a convenience is illegal than to be blindsided by permanent bans issued for gold farmers. But maybe that's just me.

I skimmed through  the thread but I didn't see an outright comparison of the two...

REMOTE CONTROL software allows you to control your computer from another computer/phone/device. For all intents and purposes, when you use this, you are playing the computer from your computer where you usually play.

VPN SOFTWARE is effectively a proxy. Rather than going the normal route (home -> ISP -> game), it tunnels through another system to make it look like you are in another location.. So, (home -> ISP -> server in europe -> ISP -> game), making look like you are in europe rather than america

With VPN software, if there are a bunch of bots that use the same vpn, it would look like, to jagex, you are logging in from the same place as the bots, ergo the ban.

With remote control, you look like you are logging in from wherever you usually log in from. The only thing that could possibly flag you as a bot is using it on a touchscreen and clicking in the same place, which does not happen very often at all

Whilst yes, I agree with you that it is lazy, and just poor form in general, the general rebuke to that is "it's easier to target the mode they use to do something, than the rule breaking itself". If 90% of botters are VPNing, it's easier to say, well we can detect VPNs to a much better accuracy than botting, so we'll ban people using them. Yes, poor form. Yes, casting a much wider net will catch much more people. Unfortunately, people seem to be more concerned about a lack of bans for bots than about false bans, so Jagex will likely be slow to respond.

Pretty sure somebody got onto my account somehow through a vpn, jagex guardian showed me an 'unauthorized login' with an IP that was really sketchy, and three days later I get 'account still logged in' upon waking up, and a perm ban 6 hours later.

Cool beans, never macro'd or anything. :(

Should have reported that straight away to Jagex. They can lock your account till you have secured it once again.
