Necromagus
Ladies, gentleman and others, by this time next year I will have my army of flesh-eating monster chickens. Just two days ago, news reached me that scientists have succeeded in taking the first step. Chickens ftw :D My Tip.It Times Articles (10 and counting) || The Varrock Library Author Index projectDo you dare to dream? - Part 19 added. || The Hospital (WIP) - New story!Necromagus looks like a viking ... with glasses. misterxman
To the people who posted "why?": You beat me to it. Seriously, are these chickens going go be 100% healthy thanks to these mutations, or are they gonna have a messed up life? If the latter, I don't think it's worth the fun these scientists are having, and instead focus more on trying to find more helpful results like cures for diseases. Adam007
Why? Just because we can. Curiosity I guess. I love everything related to genetic engineering - must be the mad scientist in me. @mxm - I think the article said that none of the eggs were allowed to hatch. The real point seems just to confirm that they are related to crocodiles, and explore the possibilities of using that gene to better humans with teeth problems. I doubt a chicken would have any worse of a life though having teeth. Mutations aren't always a bad thing. They're the reason species evolve. This is sort of stuff makes animal testing seem more cruel that usual. I am not against animal testing on medecin, i mean i value human life over animal life any day  . This is sort of useless experimentation has no usefull points in it, ok so it can grow teeth like a reptile yay! Greatsilverwyrm
I want better pictures, darnit! I also want to know whether or not they're actually what could be considered teeth, or simply growths on the beak.

Necromagus
As for the 'why' argument: First of all this proves a very essential point of the theory of evolution. It shows that genetic information from the chicken's primitive ancestor is still present in its genes even today, and not just under the microscope but in real life. Second of all techniques like these may be key in effectively treating diseases that are caused by genetic defects. What you see as a waste of money may save thousands of lives one day - and gives us valuable insights on the way life on earth developed to boot.
