Cell Phones

I was just looking in the flier, and was looking at cell phones, and one of them said '$0'. I know it obviously isnt free, so how does it work when they are selling phones for nothing?

They ask you to sign a contract, you pay them something like $15 a month or w/e you want and you get a 'free' cell phone with something like 60 'free' minutes to call a month. The contract usally is for one or two years.

Worse than that most of the time. Some companies make you pay $40 minimum per month for 1 or 2 years.

Rebates are always good to get stuff cheaper after you pay the regular price first. Those rebate checks take some darn long to get to me.

That wouldnt happen to be one of those Vodaphone Maxicap things would it? Ive seen that damn add so many times its been permanantly etched into my brain, so thats why i remember it :?

What every one else has said is pretty much right though, you pay $0 for the phone but you end up with a certain fee per month. Where i am it tends to work out that the better the phone, the more expensive the plan, so you might end up paying for the phone through fees anyway.

I myself have a $30 a month plan with $25 on calls and messages and $5 a month for internet on my phone or some crap, but i havent bothered with that. Also get 200 free messages from 8pm till something like 6 in the morning, cant remember exactly what it was.

Remember that if the phone gets lost or stolen, you will still be paying per month...

Or you could get insurance.

But either way, phones get outdated very quickly now days.

So i wouldn't sign up for a 3 year contract in any case, regardless of how attractive the offer is.

Well, if the offer is really atractive why not? I had my cell for 4 years, and I changed it middle of last year, and is already outdated, but I'll keep it for more 2-3 years!

Went into the shop asking about pay as you go stuff and they tried to talk me into getting a ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20/month contract, with o2. Undecided atm.

Once you go contract you will NEVER go back, it's so convinient. The free phone is a bonus too - Just make sure to go for say... an 18 month contract, I don't wanna be stuck with what I've got for 3 years.

I wouldn't want to go with even an 18 month one... I thought the standard was 12.

O2, for some reason, are idiots. Not for their service, but for their calculations. Last year I had a ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20/month contract with them with which I got a free Sony Ericsson K700i.

When it became time for me to choose a new phone, I wanted the XDA2i pocketpc which showed on their site for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã100 on a ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20/month contract... However they wanted to charge me ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã250 for it, saying that I don't spend much money with them. But I could just cancel my contract and start a new one (as opposed to 'renewing' the current one) and get it for the amount advertised on the site...

So in the end they were saying that I could pay an extra ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã150 or jump through a hoop, which makes no sense.

I went with the 18 month so I could get the first few months half price. I'm with Vodafone, and I'd never use another network, great service.

Yeah I'd probably get a 12 month contract if I was to go into a contract.

Only problem is that I don't have a stable income atm. :(

Atm I'm with o2, best service for pay as you go I've had on a phone yet. With every ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã10 /month I top up I get like 200 or something free txt messages. Problem is that I use it to call more than I txt.

Also if you want to stop the plan, they make you pay some outrageously high termination fee. If someone else in your family has a cell phone, try getting a family plan. I got my phone for "free" for only 10 dollars a month because my mom has the same phone.

you can get a cell phone for free if you agree with signing a contract where you pay the cell phone company like $50 a month for 4 years, or $2,400 total. does that sound like a free cell phone?

I personally hate cell phones. YES I have one, but more of a GPS device for my parents   . I heard in very extreme cases they cause tumors on the side of your head you mostly use it on.
