Barihawk
If Pokemon and "The Loonatics" (<-- Worst abomination of TV ever) can pass off as educational TV, sure...why not Runescape? My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. CelticQueen
I think there are a lot of benefits to playing a game like Runescape. I know people of all ages play Runescape, but there is no getting away from the fact that a large percentage of the players are teens/kids. These days many parents are reluctant to give their kids freedom to go out and about, or in some areas even spend time in the back yard because of there being so many dangerous people etc about. Then there are the kids who live in rural areas and it isn't as easy for them to join youth clubs etc or see friends, so the game provides an opportunity for social interaction. With something like Runescape, you have the opportunity to explore lands from the safety of your computer, everything from the desert lands of Al Kharid to the snow capped Wolf Mountain. Then of course there are the quests which are great fun. Many can be done alone but some require the help of others, so you have all the social side of it as well as the thought and logic that needs to be used to solve quests. Not sure about the loonatics, but pokemon is definetly education (and not just the games) You can teach how to control your dog at fighting, jk. How? I've only seen snow ONCE. 1. UNO. FOT. When I was like 4. Yet I can imagene snow and other things by games. And RS shows how people work in order to buy things, like what someone would do for a job. Pinkbullet3
Assignment for tomorrow: -Complete "Romeo and Juliet" quest -Get to level 45 woodcutting *Failure to complete these assignments will result in a detention* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- At home... Mother: So, what did you learn today, honey? Son: I learned how to runecraft Natures. Mother: You learned how to runecraft Natures??? What the flip is that? I thought they were supposed to teach you English, and Math, and History... the usual school subjects. Son: Well, I learned that calling someone a "n00b" can make them mad, but calling them a "newb" wouldn't as much, and that when I reach lvl 40 runecrafting, I can runecraft 84 minds instead of the normal 28, so I can runecraft 3 times as many, and I learned that there are 3 gods that started RuneScape. Well, I think 3 gods started it... is that what Mrs. Cassie, who, by the way, has some nice eyes, said? Mother: I'm going to see your teacher tomorrow. Go do your homework. Son: (enthusiastically) OK! ^ Blog.
wolfboy
Is runescape educational? In some ways, yes. Merchanting, for example, teaches basic economics, like supply and demand. Should runescape replace reading? No. I think RPG's, as part of a child or teen's leisure time, will help them be more rounded adults. Too much reading will leave them with almost no social skills. Too many video games will make them...well, would you like fries with that? Ok, I know there are a lot of people who make big bucks from the video game industry, but they didn't get there just by playing them all day. Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown; ignorance can be educated and drunkeness sobered, but stupid is forever.

shade_bandyt
duke and anime, geez, have a sense of humor for once... to me the biggest lesson in runescape is the results of labor vs business. with a job, you can make money, but its limited to the amount of time you put in, i.e., your hourly rate. if you work irl for $15 an hour, and work 40 hours per week, then your weekly pay is $600. if you want to make more money, you have to work more hours. because hours are limited, your income will be limited with a business, such as rares investment, or hiring workers, you make money based on the size of your workforce (also called leverage), regardless of your personal effort, you still make money. that way you can make money even when you are offline and not limited to the amount of hours you spend this is a very important difference. lots of people leave school and go out into the workforce irl thinking that a good job will make them rich. the fact is that with bills and expenses (unfortunately lacking in runescape), a job just doesnt cut it, which is the sad reality. if people could explore this in runescape, it could actually make them better prepared as business people in the real world, at least with a better perspective of the difference between a job and a business in terms of income Are you a member with a full bank and cancelling your subscription? Dr_Elephant
this is a very important difference. lots of people leave school and go out into the workforce irl thinking that a good job will make them rich. the fact is that with bills and expenses (unfortunately lacking in runescape), a job just doesnt cut it, which is the sad reality. if people could explore this in runescape, it could actually make them better prepared as business people in the real world, at least with a better perspective of the difference between a job and a business in terms of income I work in the financial industry. I interact with people every day who did well in school, got excellent grades, went to college and did well there too, but now their credit is ruined because they were never prepared for the reality of economics. Runescape can do that a little, but only to a certain extent. No matter how poor your avatar is, it's always easy to rebuild wealth in the game. Even if your account was "hacked" and your bank was wiped clean, you can still muster up the strength to take down a goblin for a few gp to buy a pickaxe and mine your way out of poverty rather quickly. What do I propose? RS debt. We already have banks in RS. Why not implement a loan program through those banks, complete with interest? The youngsters will get all excited to borrow a quick 100K to afford that Dragon Long they've been wanting. Then, when they start to ignore the repayment plan, repossesion begins and their RS credit suffers, negatively affecting their ability to borrow money again. That's the kind of lesson I'd like folks to have learned before they come to me in real life. Edit>>> Lest anyone think I'm taking this too seriously, remember that it's harder to convey my dry sense of humor in text form.
