cardsfan
just so nobody is confused, this is a quitting rs post. many of you dont know me. My rs name is chess1991, and i have been playing for 4 years, even though my stats are mediocre. I am NOT going to tell you about how much money i made over those years, or how cool my stats are, because thats not what this post is about. Instead of writing this post about how cool i was in the game, im going to write this post on a more meaningful subject-why i should quit. Runescape is a trap. It lures you in with its exciting and diverse gameplay. It causes you to play hours on end trying to achieve a "higher" level of pixels. It draws people into the exciting "omg that armor is so cool", or "omg i wish i could make that potion" aspects of the game, and lures you away from how much time it takes to achieve that. That alone ruins the game. There is no possible way to get those hours back that could have been spent doing more productive activities. my views may seem harsh to you, but im sure that you will agree with me, no matter how much you want to disagree. as many of you probably know, runescape is a VERY time consuming game. the later levels of a skill take multiple hours to level, and the harder skills may take weeks to get descent exp in. How much time are you willing to spend to get that extra level. I used to fall into this category. I would sometimes give up studying time to level agility, or instead of going inside i would train magic, and for what? now that i've quit, i have nothing to show for those crazy hours spent. Now that im in highschool, my 90 range does nothing to improve my grades, and my agility sure doesn't help in sports. however, i dont think runescape is all bad. It DOES increase how social you are, and it DOES teach you about the economy. at least to some, it teaches that you have to earn what you want-you cant just sit like a bump on a log and get a dragon chain body. so yes, runescape is a productive game, but dont let that blind you from the truth-runescape takes up a major chunk of your life. i myself spent 200 hours at least playing castle wars, not to mention the other hours of training, leveling, and hanging out with friends. dont forget, that is only a year of the time ive spent on runescape. there are still *3* years that ive spent on that game. amounting to a staggering number of hours spent on a non-productive recreation. with that time, i could have gotten straight a's (i maintain a steady A and B average now), and i could probably be a very descent athlete. For those of you who have forgotten or still havent figured out, this post isnt about saying goodbye. its not about leaving my rs character behind. its about the bigger picture. Its about saying I have to grow up and spend my time more wisely. I have to give up this game and find something else. after all, instead of playing this game i can be exercising, or reading something, which is far more productive than sitting in front of a computer. So please, for my sake, try something else. Try spending one less hour a week on runescape, and spend it on either reading something fascinating, or doing something outside. Im not trying to get everyone to quit runescape, and im not trying to tell them that the game their playing is pure evil. Im simply saying that we get so caught up in it that we lose sight of what really matters. Will this game ever pay the bills (legally...)? will it get you into college? will it ultimately make you happy for the rest of your life? No. So please, for your own sake do something else for a change. try spending a little less time on the computer, and try spending a little more time studying something that interests you, or spend it with your family. im positive that you will be happy for that choice, as i am happy about quitting. ~cardsfan/chess1991 R.I.P. jackjonson
i agree, i think people just need to learn to manage time better. i personally use rs just to get away for a little bit, 16+ hour days with school and work and housework gets to be too much, its always good to imerse yourself in something fantasy for a while dont you agree? I would wait until the weekend to play, and then i'd find myself getting 8+hours on that game. I think that that is way too much, and completely kills the original intention for the game. R.I.P. Gogeta5
I agree that runescape is a trap, and a rather addictive one if you ask me. Been around since about 2001 on various different characters and I have quit many a time, but yet here I am again :? . chars used to be... hmm Gogeta5003 Darkpyro953 Wykyngveda and a few pure pkers etc.. but here I am yet again on a new char -.- Well man good luck and I hope you can stay away from runescape longer than I could :P Then again at least now I'm spending LESS time than before, just a few hours a day. And maybe if the arizona cardinals did a little better, id be spending my time watching their games at the new stadium instead -.- heh. Then again at least the suns arent doing too bad :P

jackjonson
yeah, 8+ hours is too much, something most of us myself included know all too well. ive cut back and i browse forums from time to time and play maybe 2 hours a week total, it makes the game much more fun too if you ask me, you dont spend any time worrying about it, you use it to get away from your worries
cardsfan
Wow, too many ppl are quiting....... But its sad to see u goits always sad to see a member of the same community leave, but i dont want people to be said for me. instead, i hope that they can take something away from what ive posted to possibly improve their life. im in no way saying that that you should live the "cardsfan says to do this" lifestyle, i just want to open people's eyes to something that they may not have noticed. yeah, 8+ hours is too much, something most of us myself included know all too well. ive cut back and i browse forums from time to time and play maybe 2 hours a week total, it makes the game much more fun too if you ask me, you dont spend any time worrying about it, you use it to get away from your worrieswell done! i too browse these forums, and i play age of mythology instead. i think age of mythology is better because there is absolutely no goal that you can haven unlike rs where you can choose to be teh best fighter, the best in castle wars, the best in a certain skill, the best in a certain monster, etc. instead, in age of mythology you can only be the best in the game that you are playing in. there is no long term goal, unless you want to be #1 on the highscores, but its a step in the right direction, seeing that runescape has a #1 for like 20 different things. People like that really piss me off especially if its on RS2. I played during a time when it was a lot harder to train (rs2 is just about 4x the xp of rsc, at least last time i checked) not to mention you had to click (and no not that bs click and your whole inventory is cooked or fletched. Also back then the RS world was what, half the size of what it is now. Thats part of the reason I came back, just to show them how stupid they really are - not to mention the real definition of a "newb" which is a new player, and considering they can't name the first 3 people to 99 smith or something that was a real milestone for RS back in the day I would guess that makes them the "newb" compared to me. But anyway enough ranting about that. Sooner or later I will quit, most likely when I get into college, right now I'm just using it as a getaway from highschool life. Really really random question: did you ever play on pokerstars.net under the name 'cardsfan'?even though i have left runescape i intend to be active on these forums, so in a sense im not leaving  as for your really really random question, cardsfan refers to the saint louis cardinals, not to the playing cards, so the answer is no  R.I.P. Woe is me! =) Well my fellow quiting buddy, I wish you luck in the real world and in all your educational and future endevours in general. Yes this game does take up a lot of time if you hit the addiction, but you meet some great people and have some great times along the way. Silverchipmunk
Personally, insted of quitting, you might consider playing very casually. Maybe and hour or two every few days, or less. But we must realize, runescape is not life.

zerosouls
What about those that live in a rather small town with a bunch of posers (emo is the trend right now) where it's snowing all the time well at the moment it's really wet outside from melting but still i mean what could i do? I don't feel like reading, i like to play sports but i really dislike hockey so not much else is left in the winter here except for curling and come on lol. Anyways my point is it may be addicting and it may be pointless but i still love playing, i hang out with friends all summer playing basketball and i don't play rs really at all but in the winter out here theres nothing to do except drugs and drinking which isn't my cup of tea (in winter anyways lol) so i play rs and i'm starting to get back into making graphics in photoshop which i used to enjoy. Lord_Gromit
Well personally, I spend maybe 2 hours daily on the game. I am easily maintaining a 4.0+ GPA. My stats aren't the best, but they're not bad for only 6 months, and Runescape hasn't taken over my life, and its fun. And that's all that matters. :P
Guest Xyrho
Yes i agree with u intirely. Ive been playing since 2002. Everytime i would play then id quit but then somhow i just seem to come back to play it again. Although i agree with u i still say that it is the persons choice to play this game. They play this game for there own reasons....like to escape their horible life, to experience things that u cant outside of the game. This game is like a place to relax, forget about ur troubles, and just play for the sake of it. Personally i like to play this game, learn more about the quests origins like the dragons and elementals and such. I do play a lot but i still manage to finish my homework with A's and whenever theirs tons of homework or a test i do quit wat im doing in rs and get to studying. Chaudproto
I find it kind of ironic that you quit runescape so that you can do other more "productive" things with your time yet you say you play age of mythology instead. You go from one game to another. Yes you probably don't play as much but that's still time you could use for reading or exercising which ultimately has no real benefit other than achieving things you want. Reading for example, is nothing more than diving into a different world and spending all that time not gaining anything but a story unfolding before you. If that's the case then you can obviously say that a game is the same way. Yes reading will increase your vocabulary but so will playing a game more often than not. It's still not really producing anything other than pleasure in your mind. Exercising can extend your life expectancy but there are several people who just simply use the walking they do during the way as exercise and are perfectly healthy and live a long life. Exercising to gain muscle on the other hand gives nothing really productive. Yes you have increased muscle, but what are you going to use that muscle for? Are you going to enter a contest where muscles are the main requirement? Those are still just things you want to do. Not anything you have to do to live. You could say that the muscle would help you move the things around the house and various other things. Well for example when are you going to try to move a large screen television by yourself. You would normally have somebody else help you and two to three people can handle something like that. The point im trying to make here is that that time that you spend playing rs COULD be used for more productive things but you more often than not still only do things that you want to do and not have to. caskade
I just have to say this: No matter what you do in life, do what make you the happiest. Do whatever it takes to fill that void. If this is what makes you happy, then good on ya'. Some just like to escape for a while. That's why we play games, to escape reality, and that makes some happy to be able to get away. If its what you want, then grab it by the horns and take a ride. Sig Under ConstructionCurrent Goals: FIshing 91/99 Cooking 93/
