10 May 2006 - The New QuestHelp System Next

Introducing the QuestHelp system!

We know it can be very frustrating to get partway through a quest only to hit a puzzle you just can't solve. However, we also know that simply resorting to looking up the entire solution can take all the fun out of the quest and often results in you seeing more solution than you wanted to see. This can leave you with the feeling that you didn't really solve bits you could have done.

Therefore we're proud to announce the launch of our new QuestHelp system! The system looks at your current progress in the game to identify your exact position within a quest and then offers hints on how to get past the point you are currently stuck at.

Even better, the hint system is able to give 'cryptic' hints, which are just enough to get you thinking in the right direction, but still allow you to enjoy solving the puzzle for yourself. If that's not enough it can then give a more detailed hint to help you get past the sticking point. Additionally, some hints contain maps and images that provide excellent visual clues to aid you during your quest.

The system will give you up to 4 hints a day. Of course you don't have to use all 4 and for maximum enjoyment of the quests we would recommend only using the QuestHelp system when you find yourself otherwise stumped.

For the moment the QuestHelp system is a beta and provides help for all of our free quests. We will be looking to add the members quests next, just as soon as we can get all those hints written! So you can look forward to those being released in batches in the future.

There are a couple of reasons we started with just free player quests. Firstly, the majority of our game related queries are from free players. This will hopefully free up a significant part of our Customer Relations team, who can then be re-shifted to focus on processing game abuse and cheating reports even quicker, improving the game environment for all of our players! During the beta version, we also hope to get your ideas and suggestions via our forums to make the QuestHelp system as helpful as possible, which we can then look to take into account as we update with help for all of our members quests.

You can log-in to the QuestHelp system from the main front page and also from the Knowledge Base.

For more information about the QuestHelp system, view the QuestHelp Knowledge Base article.

thats stupid, what are quest guides on fansites for? I think its dumb the way jagex is trying to do the work of fansites as well as making the game.

i guess its ok in ways, but few poeple will use it, most will just use a guide if theyre stuck

The problem is not that I don't know how to read a quest guide, the problem is I am not sure where the hell I am up to. I'd rather not start the quest again and then work out where I am, so I just never finished up.

dude, what you could have done is gone to the ingame quest index, clicked on the quest, and it tells you what youve done so far in that quest.

seems to me like this will make new quests even easier to do, because its pretty rare for a veteran player to get stuck 4 times during one quest, so like a team of 3 players doing the new quest could just take turns using their questions...finish a quest in about the time it would take to use a guide lol.

it says it resets after your 4 points are up, but im not sure if you get another 4 or what... its a lil strange to me

Yeah, or they can wait an hour and get a guide from someone who's already done it. It's not exactly hard atm.

This update is for people who don't like to be walked through an entire quest, but occasionally get stuck. I do think it's a way of trying to wean people off fansite walkthrus, but not necessarily a malicious one - it's to the benefit of general gameplay if people can get small hints without having to spoil everything with a walkthru.

Won't use it myself, i hate doing quests even semi blind (what's that, i've walked all this way and now i have to go all the way back and get an iron bar? i hate you!), but i thik it's a good idea.

In a little hilltop village they gambled for my clothes

I bargained for salvation and they gave me a lethal dose

I offered up my innocence, I got repaid with scorn

Its nice that F2P got a update that was really mainly for them, most members have either done or know about tip it.

On the whole though...its hardly an update. More of an attempt to make people use runescape rather than other fansites. Sitting down on chairs, now theres an update!

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

In their Database, it says that they mainly implemented this system because so many people send queryes about quests to CS. This system would allow CS and other Jagex staff to check more abuse reports and be more efficient in that area. Pretty good idea imo.

well i log into runescape today aftera long grueling half-week and think well at least runescape might update today. so I look on the news page and think wow! f2p quest guides! as if they wearnt easy enough already! and look you have four points to spend Oooo the joy of boundries. so I go on there and it seems that oh wait ive already completed all of the nonmembers quests as has most of the other paying members. oh joy the rest of the members should be filled with glee.

If your going to make a f2p update make it usefull for your members too!

half of the f2p population is too stupid to look in the knowalage base anyway. theyd rather follow higherlevels around begging for info! to me this might go down as one of the most worthless updates of the year.

Well it does say that it will have members quests when they get a chance to write all the hints for them. And until then you do have tip.it's guides for members quests.

And on the other matter about Jagex trying to "get rid" of fansites. Fansites shouldn't really be the place that someone goes for more information on a game than the game's official site. Fansites, in general, should be more of a compliment to the official site, than the official site complimenting the fansites. This is just their way of trying to become more involved with their own game. More than just basically a link to the game. The game has grown so fast that they haven't been able to keep up with all aspects, which is why fansites popped up and grew faster than the official site. Now that they are turning their attention that way, people assume it's only because Jagex doesn't want fansites around.

But shouldn't the offical site reflect more about the game than the fansites?

If Jagex ever made a perfect update, there would be players complaining about nothing to complain about.

I understand you perfectly.

Nick off and get us a million-gazillion goblin amours from Fallador. And guess what? You can colour with dye. Oh and you'll have to walk.

(Thanks for the tip:))
