gpa

EDIT: Vov...you say 4.6GPA = 86% Average? This doesn't make sense. It sounds like different areas give different GPA's...which is completely pointless. How the heck do Colleges/Universities determine who to accept, if someone from some noname area has like a 5.0 gpa, but in reality would have marks lower than that of a 3.7 in another area?! Wth? :wall:

I'm over at UOIT in Oshawa.

I honestly don't understand the GPA system, most of the highschools in the GTA do not use it. In highschool they never mentioned it to us, for every report card we just got our number grades for each class and an average [ex. 90, 86, 94, 83, 97 = 90 average].

When we got our handbooks at the start of the year at the university it was explained that 60's = 2.x GPA, 70's = 3.x GPA, 80's = 4.x GPA, 90+ = 5.0 GPA. After speaking with some American friends I've found that the American system is far different, they consider marks in the 80's to be 3.x and 90's to be 4.x.

Me = :-k

I know the price. I pay it gladly.

Because if they compared people by percentages, it would clearly show those who actually try compared with those who play the system to get a 4.0

And I like playing the system. And not having to do that whole effort thing.

Untrue. That's the flaw in education as a whole...I don't study at all, but can pull 90's without a problem. It's not cause I'm a super genius, so I'm not being cocky, it's just because I "soak in" whatever is said in class, and I complete homework. After that, tests are a breeze.

However, many other people who have the SAME marks as I do (thus, they are considered equally as "smart") do the homework, but still need to study for several hours each test. I put in little effort, they put in a ton of effort. The end result is the same.

As a result, since maybe last year (grade 10) I realized that grades mean NOTHING. Two people can have 99% averages, one can be naturally smart (gifted or something), the other can be a great studier. I'd view the gifted student as actually smarter in reality, but since the grades are the same, Universities value them equally. Completely stupid in my opinion, but there isn't really a solution. That's just how it works :wall:

To play the system requires some effort :P

and it also means you have some brains to figure out how to play the system

I'm not arguing...just confused.

A GPA is based on your percentages. You still have to make A's (around 90% and up) to get a 4.0 just as to get a percentage average in the 90's you'd have to average in the 90's. How is it easier to get a 4.0 than it is to average your percentage in 90's?

BMW, what I'm saying is it would expose the difference between the gifted who don't try much, the not-quite-so-gifted who try hard, and the gifted who actually try and pull the 99% in everything thing.

For me, I know an A is an A whether it's a 89.6 or a 105%, so I'll go with the minimal effort required to get a 4.0, in most cases.

Lucky, an A for my county (and devils =P) starts at 94 (ok, 93.5 if you round).

I've always wondered how America makes it equal. Where I live (on the east side) an A is a 93.5. On the West side it's a 90 (or I guess 89.5). So If this is true how is it equal for a college to admit a kid (over another perfectely equal student) who got a 90 on the West coast and got an A, over a kid who got a 92 on the East coast and got a B.

My mom told me that maybe the schools make things harder on the West coast but I think that just sounds like a crap reason. Numbers are numbers, when you divide a certain amount into another amount its easier to get a 90 over a 93.

I dunno, wouldn't make too much difference for most people as for west/ east coast. It seems like most people stick to their regions, unless you're going Ivy league or something. In which case, a good dosage of luck is more necessary than anything.

I think colleges are suppose to take into account where you live and stuff like that to know what you had to do to achieve those grades

they dont care about gpa this has been stated already, they care about class rank.

No, I'm pretty sure they factor in both. I know I've seen college admission factors from several different schools that list a different percentage for both class rank and GPA. What was stated is that they don't care that much about weighted gpa.

you might be right, but i think they look at class rank a lot. I think they might factor in both, cause then its unfair in small private schools (where people usualy get high grades). I donno whatever, it probably varies from college to college really.

In 9th grade I had a 4.0 all year. 10th I made a B and dropped to like a 3.96.

11th (last year) I made another B and dropped to a 3.9 or so.

At my school there is usually a few people in every class who make about a 3.7 or higher. The majority of the people usually have between a 2.0 and 3.0

Then the rest usually have less then a 1.5

End of '05 I had a 3.554 Cumulative GPA. Pretty cabbage really.

I'm hoping for a 4.5 or close to it the end of this year :-?

This semesters results got realeased :D

I ended up with a 5.25 GPA for the term, and a 3.8 cumulative gpa :D

So if I get close to the same results again, I'll have a 4.1 GPA when I graduate :) 4 7's is a little outside my grasp :(

Read his previous post about the way his GPA is calculated...it's different than you might be thinking.
