It's sad how religions get led astray from their basic teaching and get turned into armies that commit atrocities. Many religions have good teachings and I would challenge you to look at the ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâfounding documentsÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ of a religion (for Islam, the Koran, for Judaism, the Bible, for Christianity, the Bible {New testament especially}) and see if people now are actually following what the religions teach. If not, I don't see how the religion can be held responsible for their actions.

Shadow I think what you're saying is right, but the way you're saying it is wrong. What I gathered from your arguement is that Islam is a barbaric religion. The things that happen in the Middle East are wrong by our standards and we would never allow it. However they have a totally different community. There's is based on religion and ours on politics. I consider some aspects of a muslim life in the middle east comparable to a christian life in the Middle Ages of Britain, eg. the use of brutal punishments and extreme interpretations of Holy Books. I believe that homosexuals were openly abused in our society as well until fairly recently (and in some places still our).

 

 

 

So yes it is a barbaric and cruel society but what can we do about it? When so many people are blinded by a religion what can you do?

 

 

 

Note - I am not saying that Islam is wrong, I am saying that the middle eastern society based on Islam is cruel. Islam in the Western World seems to be fine, I know a fair few muslim people and they arn't extremists by any stretch of imagination.

ShadowFax, every major religion out there has atrocities to its name. Throughout history, Christianity has been used to justify just as much violence as Islam. The middle ages of the Holy Roman empire were just as oppressive as today's Middle East. If you need examples, try the crusades, or look at the Catholic / Protestant violence in England around 1600.

 

 

 

I agree with Ragen. Middle Eastern society might be cruel compared to our Western standards, but it has nothing to do with one religion being better or worse than another. Don't go claiming that Islam itself is evil; a claim like that is inflammatory and false.

 

 

 

A little more on-topic... a ton of kids have all these political opinions that they have inherited from their parents. That was me for a while (I had no clue what I was talking about), but I like to think I've become a little less ignorant of American government. Now I've found my own reasons to believe what I do. Comparing what Christians did over a millenium ago and what the Arabs are doing now is laughable. You're only proving my point that Arabs are living barbaric lives whose societies should've been demolished a long time ago.

 

 

 

Anyone condoning the violence by the Arabs to the Jews is a fool. See the Americans and the Native Indians. The land that is America now was taken by force by Europeans centuries ago.

My only objection is that you (ShadowFax) seem to categorize all Islam believers as being uncivilized. You blame the religion for the lawlessness. I think this is unfair and destructive. Do you think Islamic people in your neighborhood are all uncivilized? Of course not. They are just as moral as Christians or Jews. Judging them harshly just because they share a religion with a violent Middle Eastern culture is, forgive me, kind of bigoted.

 

 

 

Other than that, I agree that Middle Eastern culture is in many places atrocious and a source of much of the violence in the world today. It doesn't help that the area is of such strategic international importance.

While you cant deny that many of the terrorists in recent years have been muslims you cant blame the entire religion thats just absurd. Many horrific acts have been done "in the name" of all the different religions but that doesnt mean they preach it.

 

 

 

I do think however, that there is a lot of work to be done in muslim western communities to stamp out this kind of hate that is brewing as well as pressure put on muslim governments by the UN to stop disregard for human rights in their own countries, especially among women.

 

 

 

I have read some of the Koran, id like to read some more but i dont really have time. It is my personal interpretation that Islam is not quite the loving and peaceful religion it claims to be but that doesnt mean i'm going round insulting people over their beliefs.
