Best Cover Versions

So I'm sitting listening to the Radio One Live Lounge album, where bands will play a few covers in their sets, and it got me thinking about all my favourite covers. You know, the kind that are better (read: more enjoyable) than the original. I'm sure I can't remember all of them, but some of my favourites would be...

Radiohead - Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd Cover)

Rush - The Seeker (The Who Cover)

Metallica - Tuesday's Gone (Lynyrd Skynyrd Cover)

Metallica - Turn the Page (Bob Seger Cover)

Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar (Thin Lizzy Cover)

Metallica - Astronomy (Blue Oyster Cult Cover)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails Cover)

Rainbow - Still I'm Sad (Yardbirds Cover)

Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin Cover)

Tool - You Lied (Peach cover)

A Perfect Circle - Imagine (John Lennon Cover)

I'll add more as I remember them I guess.

So, what are your favourite cover versions of songs?

I agree with most ones here. A few I didn't hear, but I'm gonna have to get a hold of them.

Imo, some great covers are:

Sonata Arctica - Die with your boots on (Iron Maiden cover)

Thunderstone - Diamonds and Rust (Judas Priest cover)

Johnny Cash - It's not me babe (Bob Dylan cover)

Nightwish - Over the hills and far away (Gary Moore cover)

Nightwish - High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) -- a totally different feel from the original, but very powerful imo. Marco's voice rules.

Children of Bodom - Bed of Nails (Alice Cooper cover)

"Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

dream theater do an awesome version of hey you - pink floyd.

That reminds me, the Dream Theater live cover medley is great. It goes (in order)... Pink Floyd - In the Flesh, Kansas - Carry on my Wayward Son, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Journey - Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin', The Dixie Dregs - Cruise Control, Genesis - Turn it on Again.

It's really really well done. Good transitions.

Sonata Arctica - Fade to Black (Metallica cover)

Respect - Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding cover)

Travis - Hit me baby one more time (Britney cover)

The Vines - Miss Jackson (OutKast cover)

Twist and Shout - The Beatles (Isley Brothers?)

Tainted Love - Soft Cell (Don't know the original artist I'm afraid)

Honourable mentions: John Cale and Gavin DeGraw covering Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, but the real genius is behind the song. Also, when at a gig I watched The Stranglers do an absolutely amazing cover of Dust in the Wind by Kansas. I've never heard it again, but I so wish I could. It was beautiful.

EDIT: Smegging hell, almost forgot One - Johnny Cash (U2 cover). Surpasses the original in so many ways.

Sonata Arctica - Still Loving you (Scorpions cover)

Therion - Summernight City (Abba cover)

Video of the Therion cover... besides being a pretty weird video, it's also a really odd interpretation of an Abba song...

I really like Dream Theaters cover of Master of Puppets.

*shudders*. The singing in that one is horrible  .

For the most part others already posted what i'd say. Most of the covers Sonata Arctica and Dream theater have done are great. :D

I lovee many of Placebo's covers; Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush), Where Is My Mind (the Pixies), 20th Century Boy (T-Rex), Daddy Cool (Boney M)...

The cover from Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley is great too, it's probably also more known than the original song.

Ouch, the vocals on the Master of Puppets cover really hurt my ears. But the rest of it is basically the same as the original.

Deftones version of Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd did the original) is pretty incredible in my opinion. Not sure if it's better than the original but it's certainly a good representation of it.

They also did a pretty good job of covering a Sade song (No ordinary love), which i thought was a wierd choice before i heard it.

Goldfinger's cover of 99 red balloons is pretty decent too, i'm not a ska/punk fan but i like it.

Oh, and can't forget Throwdown (hardcore band) covering Sir Mixalot's 'baby got back'.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

Shinedown did a really really emotional cover of that, in dedication to Dimebag. If the intro monologue doesn't bring a tear to your eye, I don't know what will.
