He's an idiot. A freezer would destroy a HDD because the moisture in the air would form ice crystals on the serface and in the electronics inside. While its possible to supercool a hard drive to inprove performance putting one in a freezer is a foolish way and would only serve to degrade it.

It's true that sometimes you can recover data by cooling a hardrive down, but to leave it in a freezer is still a bad idea. Although, if it's already broken. What's the harm in trying. :)

No need to call names, but that is a very unintelligable thing, a myth, and not the way to fix a harddrive. if you dont know what you're doing, and you do need things from the harddrive, just pay to get it fixed, people can access your data almost always, although the more damaged, the more expensive and difficult usually.

It is possible to recover data from a hard drive that is broken IN A CERTAIN WAY by putting it in the freezer for an hour. And it should only be done as a last resort.

 

 

 

It does NOT fix the hard drive. It simply makes it temporarily usable (approx 10 mins), during which time you can recover essential data.

The theory is that the drive platters and arms will contract slightly in the cold, overcoming any physical issues such as chips, debris, and troughs in platters caused by head slaps or malfunctioning actuators. Of course this is only good for as long as the components remain cold enough, so the time window is very much limited. I suppose if you have an overheating drive it might also give you an extra few minutes before the critical temperature is reached. Either way I've not seen it work personally, and only heard of it working a handful of times out of the couple hundred failed drives I've helped people through over the years.

 

 

 

If you've got a toasted circuit board, thrown bearings, or severe platter/head damage, it's not going to save you. Also, some drives that fail to initialize or perform properly due to physical issues (e.g. chittering drives) generally respond better to being mounted upside down or sideways. I've had a number of these over the years as the units reach EOL and the remounts buy a few extra weeks of operation. Stuck heads may be freed by hitting the side of the drive firmly with something hard but not overly massed, like a screwdriver. That I've only done once, to no good effect; the drive spun up after that, but was still beyond saving.

my uncle works for MS so i wasnt really worried which is why i didnt want to ask him without sounding like an idiot, i havent seen him in like 4 years so that would be a bad impression(works somewhere in washington)

Yes but we were under the impression you just 'found' a harddrive in the freezer giving us no clue he was proffesional or that he was in the process of a short cooldown not sticking it in the freezer like a glowstick. Its VERY rare the freezer will help, and almost always will damage it more, so its not recommended.

 

 

 

 

 

+ you said it was in a plastic baggy, which makes you think sealed plastic baggy. A sealed plastic baggy would fog up and water would collect...Not good for eletronics
