Changing Schools - A Problem

Recommended Posts

Background:

Where I live there's 2 big high schools within a fairly small area. The one I attend is considered the 'rich' school and the other is just the one where people go when they get tired of the school I attend.

Story:

This evening my father recieved an email from the head gold coach at this nearby school. They want me to transfer to their school next year (my junior year) to play golf for tham. The school I attend screwed me out of a position on the team and I don't wish to play for them. My father says he doesn't have the money to put me through college and says there's no way I'll be able to put myself through college so I need to do this in order to obtain a scholorship.

Problem:

I dislike all of the people that I have known that transferred to the nearby school. I don't think I'll be easily accepted back into my school if I decide to come back after the golf season and I'd hate to leave all my friends. I've worked to hard to get in well with everyone and I don't want to have to start all over.

My solution:

Though my solution is completely irrational this is what I planned to do when he told me he wanted me to transfer schools. My idea was to drop out and when he got the point, I'd wait till the next year and redo my junior year at the school I currently attend. He told me if I didn't transfer then I'd mess up my life, but if I do transfer my life will be messed up anyways. There's no way I can leave what I've worked to hard to gain just to play golf with a slim chance of getting a scholorship.

So, what I need is some ideas on how to get out of this.. My dad always thinks he's right and doesn't want me to grow up and make decisions on my own, but this is one thing I think I should decide on. True it would be nice to play golf for a team that is fair to me, but all I want in life is to find my one true love and to be surrounded by friends.

There are tons of other ways to pay for scolleges other than sports. Good grades, political parties, church organizations, the military and tons of other groups offer grants and scholarships for college. Visit your career counseler or whoever's in charge of that stuff at school and they'll give you tons of options. I know im different but if i were in your position i would definatly stay.

I'd do about anything to stay.. Good grades may be an option. I had an average of 3.5 GPA last year but I've been slacking this year. Church, I don't attend seeing as how I'm agnostic. Military, I've been thinking this might be the way for me but I have a problem recognizing authority. That could be a disaster.. lol. I figure it shouldn't be too horribly hard to put myself through college. Of course I'll have the student loans and such but I plan on getting a job within the next few months and saving some of that money just for college. Then getting a new job when I go off to college. I might not have all the fun things others might have, but at least I'm getting the education I need for life..

Study in Australia :) We've practically got the cheapest tertiary education possible :3>

In all seriousness, stay at your current school. Forget golf, at least for this season. It is not going to make a major difference untill you hit your final few years of school.

Just stay in your school dude.

Btw, don't get worried about cost's for college. Next year i'm transfering over to Full Sail (Game design/arts/ect. College) with a few friends of mine, and I belive the degree is 76,000. I'm going to take it out all in one loan, and I don't have any scholarships.

All I know is droping out is the stupidest thing you can do right now.

If I were in your position, I would stay too. Don't get yourself in problems that you can avoid. You need to have a serious debate with your dad, and you should always act like you're grown-up, one time your dad will see that you aren't a child anymore.

At least, I think that.

This from a man who got a firebird for his birthday?!? So on one hand you can afford a really nice car. On the other hand, you cannot pay for college.

Don't transfer. Get good grades.

Ryan, you don't have to go into the Military to fight, just to let you know. There's lots of other jobs. Engineering, communication, cooking! I think it'd be cool to be a Marine though, you just have to work your tail off, be jacked, and fight everyday. :anxious: . My brother tells me that in the Marines, you don't accomplish goals, you just kill!

Very true. My dad is in the army and works as an engineer. He basicly works with computers most of the time, and on projects he can't even tell us about (his family). >_>.

Joining the guard would be easy too. They pay for all of your college, I belive. I didn't join because I just didn't really want to, but it's an easy option.

Well, I read your post this morning and I didn't have time to post a reply, so I've been thinking on it all day. :D

Like others have said, there are many other ways to get scholarships and to even go to college. You could take out student loans and repay them later on, or you could simply get another kind of scholarship, one for academics or something else. You don't have to rely on a golf scholarship.

If you like where you are and like the friends that you have, (your girlfriend goes to your school, right?) then I see no reason why you shouldn't stay where you are. Explain to your dad that you are comfortable where you are right now in life and that you don't want to go through the stress of moving to another school. Tell him that you'll find some other way to gain a scholarship or find the money to go to college. I'm sure he knows there are other ways as well.

And since you are going to be a Junior next year (I'll be a senior. ^_^) try and think about your future and investigate financial aid and colleges a little bit. The more informed you are about college life and the money required, the better you'll feel, and it could also help to have some information under your belt should you talk to your dad about it.

I hope things work out for you.

@Fad: Yeah, I know if I join I don't need to go to fight, but that's what I'd want to do if I decide to stay with the army. If I decide not to stay, I'll only stay as long as required then get my a* out of there. My gf's friend just came back from Georgia today. He joined the army 6 months ago and hurt his back recently so they sent him home.

@Kayla: Glad to see I was on your mind all day ;) Hehe.. Yeah, I've done a bit of research into the college I plan on attending and I've got a decent idea of how much it's going to cost to attend school there and I also plan on getting a job in January which I'll save some of the money from to put toward college. I always hear about scholorship chances for seniors on the school announcements but I don't pay much attention now since I've got a few years to go before I really need to look into them.

@dark: Heh, my parents took the money out of their savings to pay for my car.. I don't think they'd be willing to drain all of their savings for my college expences.

Also.. I think my dad figured out I really don't want to transfer. He hasn't mentioned it to me today and usually he doesn't give up easily.

@My bro: Yeah, bio is a b* but I was lazy last quarter.. I plan on my a* in gear this quarter.

@Fad: It's only a stereotype that everyone in our school is rich. It's not true, but it is fun to take see someone from my school take a $100 bill to an away game and try to buy something small :P

Comon, even if I slack off almost all the time I still get a B(Guessing if I didn't do labs). You must have a bad teacher or I'm just lucky.

Yea, I slacked off in Bio and got a B too. Lol.

My advice:

Switch schools. You gotta' do what you gotta' do, and in the end, if you don't like people there, or they don't like you; it doesn't matter, and it's actually for the better...You'll be able to concentrate more on studying and less on talking, which was my problem in school. :P

Don't drop out, no matter what your plan is. You'll regret that.

Just switch, play golf, get your scholarship and rock face in college.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

cant you stay on your school and play the golf for the other one without getting transferd and get the scholarship? (bye the way in the netherlands evry one gets a free scholar ship wich just is enough money for paying school costs aint there such a thing in amerika?) or second option after school work 1 year then do collage and work and use the money from that other year.

iv had to switch schools 6 times... it sucks so bad..

6 schools in 6 different places all together... having to start out again every time..

Don't switch - do what you have to do, but dont destroy your life trying.

Another problem is I don't see many people at all getting golf scholorships and I know I'm not the best. It's not that I talk too much during school, it's that I'm just lazy when it comes to homework though I know I need to get my a* in gear. And besides, I've worked hard to get all the friend I have and there's no way I want to leave them all and have to start over.

Nope.. I'm almost positive I have to change schools to play golf for them.

Heh, I've recently thought of becoming a counselor instead of a photographer but I don't think I'd be able to keep up with the work of a counselor :P

I'm going to do my best to stay out of it. My parents don't know I'm considering joining the army and I know they really don't want me to for fear I'd be shipped off to war. My gf also doesn't want me to go for that reason and that I'd have to leave her.. I haven't told any of them I'd actually like to go fight in a war, mostly just to prove something to myself.. So if I'm forced to change schools and don't get the scholorship, I'll be headed for the army ;)

i dont see a problem. your not moving so it doesnt matter if you switched schools you still live in the same area and could hang out with your old friends and make new ones too. plus you get a golf scholarship to college its really no choice. switch schools

My carbon footprint is bigger than yours...and you know what they say about big feet.

if you are worried about college volunteer ALOT. Try to join programs were you can help others by being a tuitur. Join as many clubs as you can. Go on mission trips. It appears like its alot of giving but these activities give back more then you can ever give them.

If your only source of college is this scholarship you are in for a heck of a stressfull senior year.
