New Rap = Funny, not Good

MyPurpleCrayon

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about this the other day, new rap is not good. The only talent it really takes is putting it together on a computer, which is complicated of course, but not actually musically complicated. Rap groups and musicians like Run-D.M.C., Eminem and Tupac actually takes skill. I mean, they at least wrote their own music, unlike every person nowadays.

All of this new stuff that is coming out like Jibbs and Dem Franchize Boys simply sucks. Sure, I listen to it because of how funny and horrible it is, but I don't listen to it because I actually enjoy it. It's bad, and I think it's pathetic that there are good musicians that are trying to be spotted, but they are overshadowed by this crap. I don't know if I'm the only one bothered by this... <.<

I don't think that 'good' musicians are overshadowed by bad rap musicians. If you've got talent it will come trough eventually. And how do you mean talented musicians, as in talented in the rap genre. Or do you really think that the overkill of bad rappers influences, let's say, rock musicians?

I'm not really into rap music, I do enjoy it sometimes. But not everything appeals to me. Somebody I recentely got into is Lupe Fiasco, he's pretty cool IMO.

Oh, and the rapper usually doesn't make the beats himself. It's the producers job most of the time. And it does take quite some talent and a lot of musical knowledge. There's more to 'musically complicated' than being able to play a guitar or beat the drums.

I mean talented in the rap genre, for the most part. But honestly, bad rap and like Merc was saying, hip hop, takes over the radio and what most kids listen to. I know I can't do anything about it, and I don't even listen to the radio, but it still annoys me nonetheless.

By the way, I know the rapper doesn't really make the beats himself, but they could at least write their own music. They don't do that anymore, and it sucks! I'm not that much into rap myself, but I do enjoy it some from time to time.

This is just a little rant of mine... hah :P

Well, you can rant the same thing with the other type and style of music.

A lot of the popular mainstream artist aren't nessarily good singers and mucisian. The only thing that they need to worry is to get their support from their company (in other words, money goes first, not creativity.)

You can rant in every domain for incompetent singers who has no singing skill. They can all become rich as long there's the fans supporting them.

@the Rap topic:

Yes, there's lots of them sounds like the same thing with similar or different beats. I can freestyle and imitate two or three rap songs with and without beats. It's also true that you need little skill to attempt to rap just to sound like the acutal artist.

That's one reason I don't like following the mainstream {I used to listen Hardcore rap and other less known rappers.} Yes, there are still talented and creative artists among the group, but it should not be overgeneralized by the mainstream artists.

However, there are still other rapping styles in different cultures that doesn't make the entire Rap industry horrible and unoriginal (french, spanish and asian rap for example.) There are still other subtypes and styles within the main Rap branch that does show some talents.

I was just thinking about this 2 days ago. I love rap music, but this new stuff is flat out garbage. It seems now that if you can make a beat, and know how to say "my bling on my twenty fo's", you will be a successful rapper. And how people think that Jibbs guy is good is beyond me.

These new guys like Jibbs and Young Joc would not be in business if Tupac and B.I.G were still around.

Well said. I stopped watching MTV a while ago, most songs lately just suck. Bunch of scrubs trying to act tough and get a name for themselves. I think the last new song I watched on MTV that I enjoyed was "Just a Moment" by Nas feat. Quan

Rap music died with tupac, even though he wasn't that good imo.

All the good rappers have gone down the drain, mc hammer dried up, ice tea and public enemy are doing that reality tv rubbish on VH1, rage against the machine fell apart and became post grunge.

Yeah, I guess that's my main point. If we got new rappers that had talent like those guys, then I wouldn't have a problem whether or not it was mainstream or whatever.

I'm not so sure if you can apply this argument to any type of music though. There is still rock and music that is being produced that takes a lot of talent, I just haven't heard much rap or hip hop though.

These days it seems people are focussing on trying to make their tunes "club bangers" excuse the term, but you know what I mean. Less emphasis seems to be on the content, but more of the beat. With the beat follows a certain dance, and therefore in a club becomes successful as it gets people dancing. I am very much into rap and hip hop, but these kinds of songs I agree, are pretty poor. I have a much greater interest in talented rappers rather than these quick cheap pop songs. (Lupe Fiasco :3> )

i gotta agree with ya. a lot of new rap sucks...but isn't that why we listen to the good underground stuff like j dilla's new cd "the shining" trae "restless" (i dunno if y'all agree with me on trae but i love his music) and common "be" and dj hi tek "high teknology2" instead of that crap on the radio?

Sure the majority of rap thats being played on major networks like MTV isnt great but it sells. So who is to blame the people making money from what they do or the people who buy what is considered to be a poor product? I like rap music but even I cant stand some of the stuff that gets played at the moment.

There is alot of good rap music around at the moment its just a matter of having to look for it, for example the new Jay-Z album is pretty good and it lacks his usual boasting that people criticise him for. Im also looking forward to the new Nas CD coming out.

Or then we all could just listen to alternative-rap/hip-hop which has always been good AND selling (I.E gorillaz, kanye west, gnarls barkley, beastie boys, beck, massive attack, giant robot ect.)

Unless what you mean is oldsk00l hc-rap with capital R, there's very many good artist nowdays, with way more creativity than what ye olde good rappers ever had.

I wouldn't consider Gnarls Barkley rap/hip-hop nor good. His music is more pop-ish.

And as for the creativity part, new rappers have no creativity. The only thing they rap about is "bling" and money and women. They don't rap about anything creative.

LMAO! Eminem,,, Talent? Anyway at least modern rap is better the the emo crap other people are listening to.

You can't seriously claim that Eminem doesn't have talent..... If you honestly believe that, then you have much to learn.

my friend has a shirt he wears a good amount, it sais "true rap is DEAD"

and i agree with it. rap used to be the voice of the streets, the "CNN of Black America" not anymore, now all these cookie cutter rappers sound the same, have the same lyrical content, and are all just there for "teh bling and teh [bleep]es"

Even at my school... a mostly white surburban connecticut high school, the morning announcements are rapped once in a while...

hopefully, the trend will die off, and some GOOD rap will re-emerge.

I was thinking about this today. I don't want to say all, because there are a few exceptions, but nearly all of the decent rap died out after 2004. There was some great hip-hop songs from that year, great for dancin.

No offence to you, but the songs you posted consist of mindless drivel full of the same-old rhymes. Bojangles? Have you listened to the words in that song? "If you don't know her name, it's cool call her this, jigga jigga call that girl Bojangles". Uhm... what? Now I listen to a lot of hip hop music, but I have to say, I've ceased to buy any new release cds for quite a while because of this.

And for the record, there's more to life than women and money. And although I haven't really heard much rock and metal music, I'm pretty sure they don't all sing (if any do) about cutting themselves.
