imhomer
oh this is with that color wheel and using colors adjacent to the first to shade it, right? Yeah, it looks like color wheel shading what with the purple and all. You need to work on anatomy of the guy. The shading is interesting the the dark lines around the abs of the armor are too dark, replace them with the dakr purple or a slightly darker shade than the darkest purple in the body. The shading itself is decent but the way the lighter bits are speckled across the body makes it look like it's saved as a .jpg :XD: Just MHO though. Mac_The_Rocker
Clean up your shading, then dither the "completely" shaded product. Some things are best left unexamined.
eckered
ugg... i dont think you guys realize. this style of shading is used to color terlies *CARTOONIE* pieces. this doesnt work with realistic crap, so please to all who aer readin this, dont draw a picture of your best frend, then shade it like a cartoon@!!!@!. also, take out all the dithering. it looks horrible. the anatomy also nees work. i sugest trying to fix that before you try to become a superhero and shade like terly... wop wop

terley
I do agree eckered, being too drastic with your Hue shifts can make it looks too cartoony in some situations, but it's mostly down to your colour saturation, adding tints of other colours does reflect what happens in real life, if you want to make your colouring more realistic I suggest you be much more suttle with your shading, don't dither unless absolutely necissery and don't stick to so little colours. Im only suggesting that, because pixel art is all about working to a certain palette, you've got to learn to make the most of your palette and really understand colour the best you can, don't pretend you do know what colours to pick when you clearly don't.. If it looks too cartoony, so what.. At least you're learning something. I would definately expect you to try learn as much as possible from those around you, or you wouldn't get much better, asking why or how someone selected those certain colours isn't an atempt to become a clone of that person, it's simply to learn why and how.. To possible take that into their work and expand individually as an artist. With this you're trying to make an image using 5 colours you're unfamiliar with, I've gotta comend you for that because restricting yourself can be very difficult. The thing you didn't understand with this is you can use the same colours for the armour as for the face, it's all about how much of one colour you show in one area. I've used red as a base colour with the yellowy/peach colour for the shines, yet that same red can also be used for shadowing his face.. So you don't actually have to choose more colours for the characters face. (don't ask about the crotch area :wall: lol) With your dithering, as you have only 5 colours the contrast between those colours will be much greater so any dithering only really adds as a texture, with metal (armour) you don't don't want any unwanted texture. And with this scale image you'd only have to dither if absolutely necissery where it makes it look smoother, just zoom in and out and judge if your dithering makes any different to your work, its not a must have with pixelart. With my take on this (yes it is cartoony eckered  ) I tried to first deal with the anatomy of the character, the plan is initially symetrical so I know my work won't be slanted and from this I built on a natural outline of the character in my base colour with the red to eventually figure out the best way to add shade. And bit by bit just tweak your character more and more, adding a darker shade were needed and slowly make your way around the character until you're happy with it.. Its fairly straight forward but there's so much more you can do with just a little bit of critique, im sure with a little effort I could make this look more and more realistic eckered.. Take my other piece for example, not even half done and it looks completely different from when I started it. The thing that makes this unrealistic is its anatomy, the chestarmour atm is dis-proportioned and though the shading does have a metalic feel to it, it still looks very flat on the screen. as if you have pillow shaded it, there's nothing wrong with the colour selection, Its the quality of the artwork that makes it look realistic. This is the perfect example of what I mean, kinda sums up what im tryin to say, cheers Helm. Im not suggesting you do this, it just shows the use of colour very well with an excellently proportioned character, this was only 4 colours worth of artwork.. you need to ask yourself if its pixel art you want to do, or do you really want to make things photo-realistic.. Because imo theres no creativity in what your all talking about.

When creating metallic textures, large, bright highlights and fast changes from light to dark and key (hue shifts also help make it look more realistic, but this is pretty much covered). Unfortunately Ter didn't show this in his "edit". D: Dithering can also be handy when using limited palletes, when you want to convey more colours then you have avaliable *points to helm's piece* and to create textures when you don't have highlights and dark colours to work with. Anatomy is probably something you should sketch out first if you're doing a small piece, so you don't get stuck adjusting five pixels for half an hour. Choose a lightsource before you start shading. at the moment you've just got 'silly' shading. You piece doesn't use shading to show form and depth. Study Ter's and Helm's stuff, and see how the lighting works in it. Lol at the missing hands. I see how it is. ;P
