Media Board Trends (a calmer discussion)

tttia

Recommended Posts

As someone who has been a part of the media board for a long time I would like to have a post that discusses the current trends in a more calm manner.

Some questions for thought:

1. Has the quality declined?

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

3. What keeps people coming back?

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

ps, Is it not clear from just the last two days that all you have to do to get a topic locked here is to stir up trouble, whine and posture a bit? That is pathetic.

1. Well, some has improoved, some has gotten worse.

2. I think it might end soon, and maybe move back onto something else, I think everyone will start getting bored of it preety soon and only the strong pixelers will keep doing it.

3. Boredom? . Nah, Tip.It forums are a good place, most people are nice and friendly, and the quality of most work is good.

4. Ones where there is no point in rating them, I don't really like rate.it posts, I would prefer C&C + Rates, 7/10 isn't really useful information.

5. Quality sig posts, by quality artists, also serious discussion posts (I like to argue, it's a good way of being clear).

6. Don't really understand this question?

Most posts get locked for spam, whatever the definition of spam is, I don't know, differs for everybody :P .

Lowgravity, I want to be just like you. But...I never will be as 1337 as you. :(

Here are my views.

1. Has the quality declined?

Actually, I would say the better artists have gotten BETTER by a long shot. In my time here we keep getting more and more progress. I think the media board has proven to be a good place for people to hone their skills and learn :)

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

I commented on this earlier. I think it is great for developing free hand artists, and allows high detail images in a small size. But the problem is that it has been so high profile that it drives some nutty :)

3. What keeps people coming back?

Learning and...that age old reality, showing off :)

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

I don't mind them in general, but the problem now is the media board is a victim of its own success. It used to be that there were not enough artists for these topics to clog up the whole board. Now it is easy to see your post on the second page in no time.

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

I love discussions of art trends, discussion of media board artists, obviously cool looking sigs of nearly all types (though I prefer brushed and freehand ,etc.) and Large scale artistic works, rs related or not.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

I honestly think it is cyclical. This is a great place to learn and to teach. But after a while everything becomes the same, ya get lazy, etc. I know I used to post on ever rate my sig post. But after a while you see some grow, some stay the same, and so many new ones that you can't keep track. For me when I stopped recognizing a lot of the artists I lost interest.

Just to clarify my stance:

GreatSilverwyrm just asked me, so I figured I'd explain better...

I'm not against pixel in anyway. ANY trend is positive. It makes people learn and get better at what they like to do. It also weeds out the people less successful at it. I was merely stating in my other topic that we aren't necessarily interested in the very first work of art someone does, because it usually isn't that great...

Hope that helps. I'm all for pixel if it's done right. :)

1. I think the overall quality of work being posted has declined. Unfortunately people tend to go with mob-mentality, and when that mob is going in the way of only sigs, and pixel, people will of course follow. Which means that larger peices, or non-pixel pieces are getting glanced over and maybe not receiving the respect they deserve, because they're being overshadowed by the trend.

2. I wouldn't say it's positive, nor would I say it's negative. Some things that go along with it are negative though, such as everyone posting their first attempts at things, whether or not they actually spend time on it or not.

3. I really don't know...

4. Depends on what you're rating, if it's rating first attempts, 1 or 2 is too many. If it's rating other, more serious things, then a few more might not be too bad. I'd like to see more comments than ratings though.

5. I really enjoy seeing posts where somone posts something, and everyone gives constructive critism, not just ratings. Stuff like "that color may be a bit too bright", or, "the background is a bit busy, try it toned down a bit". Stuff where people get real help refining and perfecting their work. I wouldn't even mind if the critisms were negative. "I'm not digging it at all, try this and this and this, or start over even", is a lot more helpful than posting nothing at all.

6. I don't think I'll leave until I've really lost all hope of this board ever turning around.

ps, Is it not clear from just the last two days that all you have to do to get a topic locked here is to stir up trouble, whine and posture a bit? That is pathetic.

Fair enough. But I think if people really want to improove, then they should post, but not asking for ratings, but for advice! If you look at my first work, and my recent one, you will see a large difference, thats due to you guys helping me out + giving advice, did you never post a "my 1st sig" post Keiph?

2. Is the pixel trend positive? - no

3. What keeps people coming back? - personalitys, the addictive dessire to post your art watch and discuss it

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many? - not quite answerring the question i think about 1 per person every 3 days would be good

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY. - Long, to the point, filled with research and knowledge, funny and sarcastic

I think we all know that i am not a big fan of non-representational art (it is not really abstract, please let's not rehash all that again), so I find the pixel trend to be great.

The only thing it has done that I don't like is to push people into that pursuit rather than to large scale art works.

I also know that my old art posts were often fairly lame. But ....having said that...some of the ones now are basically stick figures. That is just not constructive. A bit of learning in art is fine to post. A stick figure that you just know is not good is kind of embarassing in my book.

It's true that people have improved, but I really doubt much of that is from the media board. For me at least, the media board hasn't really helped me improve myself, but working on things on my own, and bouncing them off some of my artistically-inclined friends has helped a lot.

1. Yea, many unfinished peices and "first attempts"

2. No, I hate "pixi" sigs

3. The crack, possibly bordom, thats why im here now tbh...

4. Too many of the same genre/quality. Mainly pixi/rubbish

5. Wallpapers, Competitions, From known artists, GSW, tttia, Keiphus, Vlad

6. Bordom, poor quality and too many first attempts and pixel sigs

did you never post a "my 1st sig" post Keiph?

Yeah, about 2 years after I made it.

Another thing I forgot to comment on.... It kinda irks me when I see topics like FireFreeks dying so quickly. He is one of the few who actually posts good work on his topics. I am somewhat a reason to that, as I rarely respond. However that is usually due to the fact that I have nothing constructive to say. Then again, praise doesn't really hurt every now and then. I think he is the only one of us X-SMG/DAG still active, as far as consistently posting work goes...

Oh, and if you notice LG (LowGravity - can I call you that?) I never post a numerical rating. If I don't have something constructive to say, I usually keep my mouth shut. Unless of course my attitude gets the better of me.

Never underestimate the power of a bit of gp :)

I do think that there are two trends.

1. people improve to sell sigs ,then find they like it and work hard at it.

2. The board has ATTRACTED some better artists.

I respect you for posting C&C instead of ratings, I normally do the same and sometimes post a rating if I think it's nessicary, and I agree with the attitude getting the better of you sometimes :P . Which is why I think people read you wrong, I think I have, and you state some very valid points. You're probally nice, you come off as kind of a evil person because most C&C is kind of rude/mean, in any kind of way.

Same here. I was just as bad as a lot of the people posting now when I first started, however, I never really asked for comments or rating on my work until I felt I was at least proficient at it. That was about 6 months or so after I started..

Yeah, you were pretty bad.

Haha... ok on a serious note.

I think people read me wrong. No, wait. I know people read me wrong. I have a very sarcastic dry sense of humor. If you take anything I say serious, then you should stop. 99% of the time I am joking around. But I'm not a nice person in real life, please don't ruin my reputation. If you noticed, none of the older members of the media board responded to that post to disagree with me, even though I'm sure a few of them didn't like what I had to say. It was probably because they know me. I just like controversy. I argue the point that can best be proven, not always what I necessarily agree with.

Back on topic.

I think as far as individual artists, we have gained alot, and gotten alot better. However, I will be selfish here. I don't think that the media board is the reason I have gotten better. Alot of the old DAG members have gotten better. But again, I wouldn't say that the media board is the cause, directly. Actually, the reason most of us got better, is because we LEFT the media board. We moved on to bigger and better things, and learned from ourselves. I think that here on the media board, following trends is good to a certain extent, but you can only take it so far. After that, you have to learn on your own. So in response to #2? I would say that yes it's good, but you have to go on farther with it, after that.

Am I making any sense here?

On the topic of getting better at SB/TIF, I can honestly say I have. I used PS before making sigs in very small amounts and in a very newbish fashion (oh these dropshadows are nice with pillow emboss!!). It's, of course, up to the audience to decide, but when I made my second (and the one lasting more than 1 thread) appearance at the ending time of SB I posted this signature. I think there has been progress.

I was very proud of that one back then.

1. yes, everyone thinks they can do great art within the first try and in 15min of work.

2. OH yea, maybe one of the most positive yet. Why? well it truly leads to more creative art the doesnt require another program to do all the work for you. As pixel art becomes more and more realistic, it will could soon develop into actual digital drawing.

3. * Looks at his avatar*, because we are a bunch of geeks deep down inside

4. 5 - rate my posts are essential for work that you feel is iffy or a new style. But work that is unfinished, or is done in 15-30 min isnt even worth posting.

5. Sig contests with more then 5 contestants.

6. Boring, quality has gone down, competition has gone down, its not as exciting. Used to be a lot of great sig makers entering every contest and always a small battle going on. Now there is maybe one or two good ones once in a while. And really we have spoiled ourselves with the amount of money we think we deserve (including me).

If you posted this instead of that ego burst + primal rage maybe the result should have been better. I wanted to post on your thread but went eating and when i came back it was locked due to the flamespam on it.

But i wanted to express my opinion anyway about this pixel problem.

While i can agree with you about the soul of your post (i've been around these boards for almost 3 years now with different names) i realy found your way to express it the only disgusting thing around. I know what was your point (and somehow i shared the same view) but not the form at all.

Yes there's a lot of ugly works going around, but this is a free world, isn't it ? I see no rules against those posts and that also matches the purpose of this board. Who do you think u are ? A censor ? no...all you can do is skip all those thread or rate them for what they are. Or suggest a "1st try sticky" that could realy save some space. (with the 2nd try taking over the 1st i suppose :? ). And from a strictly personal point of view i've never seen such an ego rising in such a disappointing way in the last months...You'r a great artist, one of the best here for sure, but on the human side today you riched the bottom imo , showing a lack of that same maturity you were ranting about. But i still consider that post as a rage burst u failed to keep in the right trails...and i'll consider the problem closed for now, saving the respect towards you to his previous level. Would be pretty disappointing to find out that's your real you... (your first reply here doesn't help a lot in this way i'd say...). Stated all the above i realy don't want to go back and check everything. I'm not angry or something with you, i'm simply stating what my thought was before i went eating, and if it somewhere looked 2 hard it wasn't ment to.

About GSW i wanted to say he was in his full rights to take his side in that thread, in fact he's still a user and as a user he posted (and maybe went a bit over the lines like every1 does sometimes). He can use and maybe abuse :P his user rights, the important thing is that he doesn't misuses the mod benefits, and he didn't at all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back on topic

1. Has the quality declined?

On average , Yes . There's still a lot of good works (not as many as before i'd say) but they somehow get lost in the mess of 1st tries...i have to agree here...

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

It's a great tecnique, but probably harder than most ppl thinks.

I personaly think a lot of ppl waste their time on this tecnique cause of the trend itself but it's their time and they'r master of themselves. We got to respect it.

3. What keeps people coming back?

Everything but Keiphus :P ....well maybe him...2

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

It's a free world. More users also mean more posts. The snake bites his tail here...

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

Posts with constructive content

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

Thanks, dad. That post wasn't my idea, nor did I write the subject of it. I simply edited it to sound as big of a punk as I could, to illustrate my point, and my contradictions. It was part of the point, but you were too thick to get it. I was merely a catalyst, save your personal attacks for a PM.

That doesn't change the fact you were wrong in the form of your post. And if you don't get it simply try to grow up a bit until you understand that sometimes it's better to apologize, also. There was no personal attack there, simply what had to be said in public, since you started a public rant exposing yourself. No discounts to you just cause you'r Keiphus. Not at all.

However i was far from the idea of running an issue here. Nor i'm willing to go further on.

oh and for my 3. one word.. I R O N Y ( i was pretty clear about what i think about your works...simply answering your 3. there)
