Media Board Trends (a calmer discussion)

Featured Replies

1. Has the quality declined?

I've only been in the media board for 3 months or so, I don't think the change I've seen would be enough to say wether the quality has declined or not over a longer period of time. From the time I joined the media board up to know, I think the quality has declined, and quantity increased (sounds stupid but it seems to be happening): When I first saw the pixel sigs, there were only a few very good pixelers (yes I like to call them this insead of the long name "pixel sig makers"), and they were all worth checking out, rating, and giving great respect. Most of the original good pixelers I saw seem to be gone, and are now replaced with numerous rookie pixelers whose combined quality could not come even close to a single one of the original pixeler's quality of sigs.

Quality, I think is diversity, how good something is, and density of good quality. There isn't much diversity, mainly just pixel sigs, yet there are so many other forms of art that could be posted (M&M sigs, I'll never forget that, kudos for originality and entrepreneurship), I wasn't afraid to try pencil drawing sigs just because they didn't even exist in tipit.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

If 90% of tipit media board pixel sigs were as good as Jeppoz's, Shaw's, or Jumister's sigs, then the pixel trend would be positive. From my opinion, the pixel trend isn't so positive because it attracts too many people who should just try something other than pixel sigs for their own good. I'm not saying I'm a good pixeler, but if I were to try abstract, it would come out pretty horrible and I would eventually move on as I know my capabilities just aren't there. I joined the pixel trend when I realized how close drawing MSpaint was to drawing in RL, and decided to use that instead of pencil drawings for sigs (which took much longer).

3. What keeps people coming back?

New sigs by good people, demand for personal sigs.

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

People should be able to determine wether other people will like their work based on the audience's past reactions on similar past work.

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

Discussion threads, good sigs posted, my 60 page shop.

Time to bring out the noob in me: I used to like those media project threads such as that puzzle where everyone put a piece of their artwork and combined all the pieces into one media puzzle (didn't do that as I just saw it). I also liked that pixel city pic thing, and the pixel houses project. These kinds of community projects are what the media board is missing, and need to be brought back if anyone can repost any of the old ideas or make new ones, I'll post something if I think it's worth working for. :)

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

I have little time for sigmaking, but I am still making sigs.

Pixel sigs by me.

Pixel Art

1. Has the quality declined?

The quality from back on Scapoeboard has definately declined. Alot of the really good artists that we had are now gone, and the few who still post here don't show any pieces very often at all.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

Positive in what way? Like benefitting the Media board?

If thats what this question means, than yes and no. People can now buy really detailed and specific sigs from the good pixlers, but the trend has brought in alot of people who post really poorly done pixel pieces.

3. What keeps people coming back?

I keep coming back for a few reasons. I like some of the people here, and I want to see how their art work is coming along.

I also come to read discussion such as this one, to see what people think about different aspects of design trends, preferences, etc..

I also keep hoping that someday I can make a few geepee from here 8)

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

I've seen this already, but I agree that it shouldn't just be a "Rate This" post, but a C&C post. If people are looking for genuine, honest C&C, and not just a rating to make them feel special, than there is no real limit.

For those wanting lies to feel good about their not-so-good art, than 1 is too many.

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

I like these kind of posts. Discussions about different trends, preferences, and.. this sounds familiar.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

When the forums opened as TIF, I posted alot on the Media Board. I entered alot of contests, since they were all abstract/landscape and the occasional space. I made a good bit of earnings from the first couple months, but then the pixels started. Once everyone wanted pixels, and the new threads were dominated by 'Rate my 1st pixel', I lost interest and didn't post much at all for awhile.

The pixelness isn't as extreme as it was at one point, as there are now people actually buying some other type of sigs, so I have entered a couple contests and opened shop once again.

From the time I joined the media board up to know, I think the quality has declined, and quantity increased (sounds stupid but it seems to be happening)

No, that makes sense. You can pump out 5 sigs an hour all day, and none of them will look good. What some people here don't seem to get is that spped doesn't equal quality. Alot of them don't seem to want to spend the time to get quality results.

I pm'ed Witty a while back, asking why he hasn't posted any of his works. He told me that if he did, that it would get maybe a few posts, and then fall off the charts, so to speak. Less people here seem to appreciate true artwork, and would rather post on someone's lame first attempt at pixiling.

As someone who has been a part of the media board for a long time I would like to have a post that discusses the current trends in a more calm manner.

ps, Is it not clear from just the last two days that all you have to do to get a topic locked here is to stir up trouble, whine and posture a bit? That is pathetic.

1.

well, i guess if you count the board as a whole yes, alot of new not that good sig makers have been coming in and good ones leaving. ( Good sig makers < Newb sig makers)

2. Well... not realy sure about this one :P I'll just say yes lol.

3. The (semi) freindly atmosphere of the boards. For me, my freinds on here, plus the fact that being new on another forums sucks wagon :P

4. When they take my sig shop down to the 2nd page

5. Good sig posts (like a good person has posted something just really awsome and awe-insipiering) , Discusions like this + discusions about the past.

6. Because the lack of good artists arn't posting as much as they used to. Now even people like Vlad and Uncovrd and Azvy arn't posting new sigs alot, and of course people like firefreek ect. arn't either. It just seems that all the mediocre/ newb pixel sigs are hogging the board. and now landscapes are starting too... Stuff like this has even made a spamish person like me cut down on posting.

I usualy like to rate guys sigs but it seems that all them are "my 1st sig" and i can give advice but people won't follow it (well some don't) So i just think why bother?

Also, those posts usualy just have people saying "preaty good for your 1st 7/10" or "it sucks!!! 2/10!!11!one!!"

Serriously, 90% of the posts on rate my sigs posts are like that lol

and yeah keiph, that anoys me too. Witty could probaly post the most ownage thing on here right now and it would get brought to the bottom in 20 mins because none of these new kids know him.

EDIT:

Demoris, i made my cash in the first few months too lol. That and the fact that i have a lot of freinds on scape (well they are on my msn lol) so usualy i have people pay me decent ammounts of cash for a sig :P But yeah, i posted alot when it came back because i was so overjoyed (not having the forums for a few months sucked lol) but then... it just kind of got worse.

heck, i'm not sure how long i'm gunna last here. atm it seems i'm staying just because of freinds and the ocasional person buying a sig :)

Like its been said, a few months ago was the good time period on TIF for non-pixelers.

I don't know how long I'll last here either. There are some people that I keep coming back to read their posts. If they left, and it was only newer, not-so-good pixlers left, I would probably diminish into an unknown figure of the past.

Hi.

Some questions for thought:

1. Has the quality declined?

Overall, I think definitely not. The good people are way better. The bad people are better too. There are some new people who aren't very good yet (but also some new people who are amazing) and some old people who will never really be all that good, but I think that on the whole, this board is definitely improving.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

No trend is all positive or all negative- it's just a trend. The great pixel works are no worse than great abstract works and are just as rare. It's not like there wasn't a lot of abstract whoring when those were popular.

3. What keeps people coming back?

I don't know...maybe we're all interested in graphics and we recognize that there are lots of people we can learn from here.

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

More than 1 per person. People should just make portfolio posts where all their works can be critiqued, not individual posts for each individual piece.

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

Posts where people who talk about how awesome I am...um, and this type of post is pretty good too.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

I don't have the free time to commit to this board anymore. I'd like to spend more time making graphics, but I've been way busy with college apps and my research paper.

That was fun.

Face it guys, the past was not really that much better. It is just that you are hitting the wall like we all did. The same ole' same ole' just loses its magic after a while. The only problem is moving on. Where to? And will ya miss your friends.

Then you realize most of your friends are doing the same and there is just no point. Check back now and again and hopefully you see them post. In the meantime you lose track of all the new members until it seems pointless to bother.

Then you start to get crusty and defensive like keiphus and have to flex your artistic muscles! haha couldn't resist. And you take some perverse joy in knowing that--if you really wanted to bother--you could blow away all the lousy first time pixelers with some real art. Then you post it, see it on page 3 and say...wow, either

a. I suck

b. They suck

c. I need a new forum.

I am not sure which of the three it is for me yet, I am leaning towards a. only because I have been artistically lazy for a long time now. We will see :) At the moment i am into the rs clan scene and it is eating up all of my time.

Oh and Keiphus. we all know you don't learn much here, but it is the community that helps you WANT to learn and makes ya put in the time on your own. At least it was for me. I didn't probably learn much here in the long run, but it kept me wanting to learn.

1. Has the quality declined?

Extremely. When I arrived awesome artists liek Witty were dominating the boards. There was a lot more indy art also. There were contests like Twiceborn's where pretty much everyone participated and it really pushed the limits.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

Mainly yes. It's getting everyone involved in the media community and giving them a chance to try. The main problem is that a lot of people think that if they spend 10 minutes on it, they can still sell it for a lot.

3. What keeps people coming back?

I don't know...I shouldn't be coming here so much :P

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

1. Posts should be the finished product and you should like it enough to either sell it or use it yourself.

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

Unique posts. Posts that contain art with expression.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

I'm considering it because this is not helping me much at all. There's not motivation here. Not to mention I'm sick of seeing these "15 minute, 2nd pixi evar" posts.

Then you start to get crusty and defensive like keiphus and have to flex your artistic muscles! haha couldn't resist. Get. Out. Of. My. Head.

Seriously though, I was thinking about coordinating with somebody (anyone who is willing) a "teaching study" type thing. Maybe where we have like a daily sketch, stuff like that, and teach these guys how to do some real art. I mean, yeah, I like to flame people. But deep down, I also like to help people, and I'm pretty good at it (all of you older people know this) So I think it would be cool to start up like a series of brushing lessons, etc... I'm sure when people see the alternatives to pixel, they will start to pursue different paths.

I tried posting some vector work the other day... It failed miserably. I'd like to think it was good, but it just wasn't what the "pixi" boys wanted to see. :(

I'd love to learn vector. It requires more drawing ability and I think it could have the same effect as pixel. Yeah, I'm puttin git ou there. I think vector could replace pixel because it could give the same effect. YOu can have the exact scene you want including your guy customized like you want.

Yeah that's my idea so don't take credit for it :P

Not to mention, when I posted my sig/ava combo animation. Sure people gave some praise but it didnt' nearly have the effect I had hoped..

the last time we did a brushing contest /fun deal xawsomex was about the only entrant :(

But hey would be fun.

I could post the linework for my latest pic (unfinished of course) and see how folks do....

Vector as usual.

If you have some too that would be great.

Others could post linework too.

The problem with vector is that it takes more than 2 brain cells to do, and you can't do it with MS Paint. That rules out about 90% of the first time pixelers. :P

Oh that ISN'T my idea, it was Solomon's some 3 thousand years ago :)

That's what's brilliant about it. You get real artists participating.

trends require willing minion! The masses!

ok, let's stop whining here and teach brushing. folks can at least learn that :)

lol

so very true.

also, as far as the trend-whoring stuff goes, i never realy stay on one style. For example i don't mind Jeepoz's pixel sigs because he does other stuff to and is capapble of other stuff :) heck if i could do pixel i'd probaly join in the bandwagon and make some $$$ :P

my favorite artists are those who varry from what they do. for example i may post a space scene one day and the next be working on some landscape/abstract combo. Or I might even be venturing into doing photo manips, ect. For me its just exploring new ideas, something that latly i haven't seen people do on the forums. It seems that everyone just sticks to there own little style. (weather it be pixel or whatever) and never realy spreads out.

although its just me, but i think that sometimes if your realy bad at one style you may be awsome at another (for example, you may suck wagon at landscapes but own at abstracts) but if you never venture out into the unknown you may never know :D

Although right now i'm just trying to wait for a good competion :( Twiceborn's was mad lol, and i still cant belive i got 7th out of like 32 on it lol (was a big achivement for me, considering guys like IDPUP and stuff were in it :))

Anyways, enough ranting from me

Wouldn't you know, I came back...again.

I have no time or energy for long posts, or controvery, or even the most subtle wit. I'm glad Keiphus is up and doing things though, I feed off of controversial flaming.

Keiph, it's a bloody shame your post was locked. Seems like no hope for this place, eh?

Tttia, you've always been known for trying to lift the people up, lol. I'm glad you're gonna try to teach the media board into Renaissance. I doubt it's gonna work, but I wish you luck.

Other than that, let's all place our bets on things like Firefreek's work and hope it will have the power to open eyes to beauty.

See ya people,

1. Has the quality declined?

hell no, i know i've improved and some others, but there still is a lot of trash being shown on these boards i get the feeling that as soon as someone makes something they post it even though it looks like shiht or hasn't been finished.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

hmm yea i guess, but when are we gonna move on 2 something different though?

3. What keeps people coming back?

for me it's the comments on pictures i've made because most the time you can get an honest reply that helps to improve your pics.

i'm not very active atm because of school work and i'm also usually unactive when i haven't made any artwork myself in a while.

1. Has the quality declined?

Yes and no. Yes because I see users here who joined "Media Board" and started doing graphics the same time Wyrm and Keiph did. But as I look on their sigs and whatnots now, they aren't any better than the people posting "R8 my f1r5t s1g!1!". And no because I've seen many users here going from terrible to utterly brilliant artists.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

Hm, I guess it is. The positive part outweighs the negative, anyway.

It contributes to peoples' more creative sides... - nothing more I can say about it really...

3. What keeps people coming back?

I have cut back on my activity here yes, and I often consider to leave. Basically because I have no motivation whatsoever to continue doing graphic. Heck, I can honestly say that the quality of my images has decreased majorly the past 6 months. The only thing I am remotely decent at doing now, is photomanips - but I use stockphotos! Congratulations, you achieved to make a decent image - just 75% not by you...

1. Has the quality declined?

Yes and no. The original sig makers and artists have got incredibly good, there are even quite a few new people who are also very good. However media board has got a lot active and the lack of talents by the many out weighs the large talent of the few :(

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

Kind of. It allows anybody with a computer and a good artistic eye to go wilts and produce quality work. However with any trend you get the bandwagon jumpers, people only doing pixel work because everyone else it. And because of that there is unfortunatly a hell of a lot of really bad stuff here. Some people are getting better, others are not. For the most, pixel art just isnt the area of art that they should be working on, but they do it anyway because of the trend.

3. What keeps people coming back?

Speaking from experience.... the hope that some real quality artwork will be posted and i can awe at it :P

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

One, a post should only be make when its completed and the creator is 100% happy with it. If the artist isnt happy then they already know what to change and should do it. I hate posts that are like... "I made this sig, i dont like the shadows so plz rate". The dude in this example already knows that the shadows are crap so whats the point in asking for critiscisms when he knows ppl will post about the shadows. Get my drift?

There should be a sticky for constructive criticisms to save the boards from the mindless spam of "rate my first pxl! w00t!!111one"

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

Original and unique art. I love the pencil drawings that people do.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

I rarely posted any of my art anyway. I do a lot of photo manips but ive never really asked for help here. I have however definitly stopped coming here so often. I used to browse a lot but there is so much unoriginal work here that i rarely bother. Its sad to see it that and unfortunatly i think that pixel art is a major contributing factor to the lack of originality here.

1. Has the quality declined? Yes

2. Is the pixel trend positive? Positive as in good? If so then no

3. What keeps people coming back? Pixel

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many? Depends what style and how good the piece is, probably 7 per page.

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY? Wallpapers/art (abstract + brushing) that people have on devianart (sp?), some of those blow me away.

6. For those who have left, cut back activity or are considering it, why? Styles they don't like are taking over, there is never a good balance of style, either too much pixel and not enough abstract for example.

Hacked, gaining none buy-able skills.

There were good artists leaving before the pixel trend. There have always been trends. I think it is more that they outgrow both the help the board gives and the audience it provides. Our two options are to

a. Grow artists until they leave

b. raise the level of the board to make it worth their time.

well..perhaps it was unappropiate.

Hmm, perhaps I haven't read all those threads with noobish works before and thus haven't realised how urgent the matter is. After bumping to these three in a row, I feel we need some CPR on TIF!

1. So yes, quality has decented from decent.

Its not nice posting somone's direct artwork, but yes i agree with you for the most part.

I think one of the main reasons people come back here, is because there are alot of us here, this is a very active board, where there are a lot of things to browse through, and contests to enter.

I know I'm not very active as posts go, but I've been browsing this forum for a long time...always thought the best artists resided here (among the runescape related forums...). So I'll put my bit in.

1. Has the quality declined?

That's the funny thing. People come, people go, so quality is such a fluid thing that it's hard to tell. What is quality to one group of people, isn't to another. I'm going to have to say that because of all the first timers emerging, that yes, percentage-wise the quality is pretty low right now. I'm kinda sick of seeing all this ugly work. Sorry to sound so rude, but yes...ugly.

2. Is the pixel trend positive?

Only positive in the sense that it's kind of 'separating the men from the mice." Again, I don't mean to sound rude or mean, but if you can't draw on paper, there's no way in hell you can draw on the computer. Even if you *can* draw on paper, there's a chance you will absolutely stink at digital painting/sketching. I'm all for artistic blossoming, but if you try something, it blows, and you keep trying and your stuff still blows...get over it and move on. We can't be good at *everything*. Stop assaulting my retinas with your ten minute jobbers! :P

3. What keeps people coming back?

Like I said, I still believe the best artists reside here, even if they're being tsunamied by all the n33bs trying their hands.

4. How many rate my whatever posts are too many?

Meh. It's hard to say, and be fair about it. I wouldn't mind seeing 10 of them in one day from The_Jeppoz or Firefreek and the like...but when you get those *ugly ten minute jobbers*...I say one is too many. :P

5 What kind of posts do you REALLY ENJOY.

Depends on my mood. I've been reading this post for a couple days now, but didn't feel like posting. This morning I just felt like I should say something. But, in general, I like posts like this, where we can calmly discuss things. But I know someone will screw it up and get it locked. Chaos is only two steps away from every thread.

6. For those who have left , cut back activity or are considering it, why?

Ask those people doing the *ugly ten minute jobbers*...they know the answer. And they're guarding it like a hobo who robbed a beer truck.

^_^

1. Overall, I'd have to say yes it has. However, it does have the potential to increase a great deal as well, as many of the people who have contributed to the decrease are also brand new; they just need some guidance and a good prodding into looking at old and new art.

2. As positive as any trend ever is in that it teaches a skill and a way of looking at things. I have to go with Keiphus on the point that there needs to be something beyond that though; people need to evolve. I know I don't want my art to look the same in twenty years, I want to get better, move on, and never stop working towards reaching a new height.

3. Occasionally, I can handle five seconds of browsing a board and actually replying. I get curious about what other people are up to (and I need to get away from my art homework/waste time between classes).

4. Any at all. Numbers will never help you, the best thing for you is people's actual, thought out opinions. People care too much about numbers as is. If you want a number, take a test. Art isn't a test, it's a form of communication.

5. Well, I really like this post. In general though, I love to see people's work; often though, I find it disappointing here as the majority are only looking for numbers and don't understand the concept of quality.

6. I was always only kind of here. I don't know why I even came here to begin with because I really don't even like making signatures, talking with people, or generally posting on message boards. I was entertained for a time by some of the members that left, especially when they would compete or try something new and out of the box, but the board seems devoid of that now. I come back occasionally because I'm a hopeless optimist.

It's amazing how much there is to art, and how incredible it can be, that a lot of people on the Media Board are missing out on. If only they would look and actually see; of course, I could probably buy the world on 'if only's.
