If she says he's dead...he's dead.

It would be awesome to see that, in a weird twist, Dumbledore himself hid different parts of his soul into horcruxes.

Why would that not suprise me.

"- Dumbledore IS really dead. "Everyone needs to move through the five stages of grief" and get past his death. "

The above is an excerpt from Mugglenet (link). JK Rowling actually said herself that Dumbledore is dead and that he's not coming back.

"Sadly she added ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Ådon̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t expect Dumbledore to do a Gandalf.̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

I know your putting up a good arguement, but is there proof that JK Rowling really said that, how could you be for sure. Even if she said it, she could be twisting her words. She may be telling you he is dead, so you will believe her. . . therefore making everybody in the book, and out of the book believe he's dead.

J.K. Rowling wouldn't do that. She'd say something that has a loophole. That. Has. No. Loophole.

Im more concerned who RAB is...

agreed. The second I read that i started coming with possible anagrams(right word?)

my first was rubeus albus   ...yeah

those are some interesting theories. It would be really weird if snape turned out to be good :anxious:

but how can you even theorize that when It "speaks" of the hatred "etched" in his face.

Also I don't remember the part where snape says "I can't go through with this" I only remember hagrid telling harry and the gang that Snape and Dumbledore had a row

I definently want to know who RAB is more then anyone else

oh also for people who posted earlier...Dumbleldore DOES go flying over(which isn't a characteristic of the Avada Kedavra) and lands on the bottom. Remember harry goes and almost kneels on him then Ginny helps him back into the castle (wewt)

so cha

i think you've got me convince on alot of that stuff

thank you for making us think!

The question shouldn't be if he is dead or not. The question should be why is he dead.

He is dead because Harry Potter needs to finish this thing off by himself. No more headmaster to hold his hand.

The purpose of dumbldore was to instruct, teach, encourage HP. He fulfilled that role and now he is worthless (Well not really, but j.k. likes killing her best characters.)

Personally, I believe he'll come back.

J.K. Rowling is a very clever author, she inserts lots of little twists and clues into her books. Obviously she likes the shock factor of "wow I didn't see that coming" in her books as well.

In my eyes, the bigger shock would be Dumbledore coming back to life in some way now that she's made those statements.

We'll see.

Ok guys, a lot of replies!!!!

OK OK u guys allllll think he's dead? Why because JK Rowling said so on muggle net? She's saying that because he took the death potion . . . he will be dead untill the potion wears off . . . think about it.

There were the 5 potions mentioned:

Veritaserum - truth potion - USED

Polyjuice Potion - Makes you change into a different person - USED

Amortentia - Love potion - USED

Felix Felicis - Luck potion - USED

Draught of Living Death - ???? - Makes a person go into a deep sleep, faking death.

Snape asks Harry about the Draught of Living Death in the very first book. *hint hint*

Book number 6: Chapter 28, page 608

Dumbledore's eyes were closed; but for the strange angle of his arms and legs, he might have been sleeping.

UBR, I don't think you seem to understand.

JKR HAS SAID HE'S DEAD.

Dead. Not asleep. Not fake-dead. DEAD. Not alive. Rotting in the ground with a portrait.

If he was alive, why had Snape and Malfoy ran? Why did he get a portrait put up of him? Fawkes wasn't there in time to save Dumbledore, and you can say a spell and not mean it.

And all those highlighted passages, why would JKR have taken them out?

I never said she lied. I said she said he's dead because he is . . temperarily. The potion making him act dead is why there is a picture, all the more convincing.

Plus, do u think that jk rowling would just go and say "Guess what guys? Dumbledore is still alive!!! Oh yeah, I tricked you guys so good, until now!!!!"

On August 2, 2006, at the second night of the Harry, Carrie, and Garp charity event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, J.K. Rowling gave a reading from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and then answered questions from the fans.

Nine year old Cory Mayer from Bordentown, New Jersey, asked:

In a recent interview you hinted at two main characters dying and possibly Harry Potter too. Was Dumbledore considered one of the main characters or will we have the chance to see him in action once again? Since he is the most powerful wizard of all time and Harry Potter is so loyal to him, how could he really be dead?

J.K. put her head in hear arms and replied:

I feel terrible. The British writer Graham Green once said that every writer had to have a chip of ice in their heart. Oh no. I think you may just have ruined my career. Umm, I really can't answer that question because the answer is in book seven but, you shouldn't expect Dumbledore to do a Gandalf. Let me just put it that way. I'm sorry.

Then author Salman Rushdie and his young son came up to ask a question, to which J.K. reacted:

I'm not that sure this is fair. I think you might be better at guessing plots than most. But anyway, off you go.

Mr. Rushdie then asked:

Until the events of Volume 6, it was always made plain that Snape might have been an unlikable fellow but he was essentially one of the good guys. Dumbledore himself had always vouched for him. Now we are suddenly told that Snape is a villian and Dumbledore's killer. We cannot, or don't want to believe this. Our theory is that Snape is in fact, still a good guy, from which it follows that Dumbledore can't really be dead and that the death is a ruse cooked up between Dumbledore and Snape to put Voldemort off his guard so that when Harry and Voldemort come face to face, Harry may have more allies than he or Voldemort suspects. So, is Snape good or bad? In our opinion, everything follows from it.

J.K. cautiously replied:

Well, Salman, your opinion, I would say is, right. But I see that I need to be a little more explicit and say that Dumbledore is definitely dead. And I do know - I do know that there is an entire website out there that says - that's name is DumbledoreIsNotDead.com so umm, I'd imagine they're not pretty happy right now. But I think I need - you need - all of you need to move through the five stages of grief and I'm just helping you get past denial.

----------------------

My original thesis

This web site has been updated several times since it was created a little more than a year ago, just a few days after Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released on July 16, 2005. But the site's opening remarks have not changed since that first day. My first words were:

Dumbledore Is Not Dead! Well... maybe not. At least, I don't think he is.

And I also said this:

All of the clues point to two possibilities, that Dumbledore's not really dead, or at the very least, that Snape's not really a Death Eater, and he killed Dumbledore because Dumbledore ordered him to, as part of a grand plan.

So, I've never claimed for sure that Dumbledore is not dead, just that there are lots of clues that make us wonder if it's possible or not that he's still alive, or that something else sneaky was happening up on the tower that night.

Most of all, I also said:

Think of this site as Half-Blood Prince therapy.

How what J.K. said fits with this site

The most important aspect of the theories and clues on this site is that there's more going on in Half-Blood Prince with the "death" of Dumbledore than meets the eye. And J.K.'s first answer to the question of Dumbledore all but confirms this. Even though J.K. is insisting that Dumbledore is dead, when asked point-blank about it by the little boy, J.K. answered:

I really can't answer that question because the answer is in book seven...

That's really important. Dumbledore is dead, but that's not the whole story, because the answer to what is really going on with Dumbledore will be told in Book 7.

In addition, the second most important aspect of this site is the belief that if something is going on, Snape must be in on it, which mean's he's on our side. When Salman Rushdie asked:

So, is Snape good or bad? In our opinion, everything follows from it.

J.K. cautiously replied:

Well, Salman, your opinion, I would say is, right.

There you have it. It's as not black and white as the ending of Half-Blood Prince would have you believe. Everything follows from whether Snape is good or bad, as we've been saying on this site.

By the way, it's interesting to point out that Mr. Rushdie, who J.K. herself had just acknowledged to be "better at guessing plots than most", described in his question almost word for word, this site's theories about Snape.

Where does this leave us?

So, what does that mean to us here at DumbledoreIsNotDead.com?

I've never claimed for sure that Dumbledore was still alive. It's only that there are clues that make it possible to think he's not dead, and even if he is really dead, perhaps thinking about these clues could make us all feel a little better about the terrible events at the end of Half-Blood Prince, which is what J.K. said she wanted.

And I think J.K.'s protestations aside that Dumbeldore really is dead, her comments pretty much confirmed that there was more going on up the tower that night than was obvious, and she said we'd find out more in Book 7.

It's impotant to note that these new comments by J.K. don't magically make all the clues we've uncovered go away, all of which lead to the conclusion, to which Salman Rushdie agrees, that Dumbledore and Snape were up to something.

Is Dumbledore alive? Is Snape on our side?

The answer is, it's still up to you, as it always has been since the day we started this site, to read all the clues, go back into the books, examine all the evidence and decide for yourself.

And if this web site has any purpose at all, perhaps it's most important purpose is to remind us that, no matter how the story turns out, to paraphrase Dumbledore himself, he will have only truly left our hearts when none here are loyal to his memory.

Directly Quoted.

I don't believe he is still alive, but there are mysteries to his death. And I also believe Snape is acually good, and was just "Following Orders".

There ya have it, what I think.

...I really can't believe this many people care about a book character. That's kinda' creepy...

Indeed. You know what would be funny? If it turns out Dumbledore's just dead, period. And all the hours people spent re-reading the books and researching to find hints of evidence that he's still "alive" would be wasted. I enjoy reading the books just as much as the next guy... but seriously, some people just get way too much into this.

yeah, i know JKR said he was dead, but here's an interesting theory i found on the net around a year ago.

*not mine*

Below is a theory I thought of that would be a solution to Dumbledore's death, one with a lot of proof behind it and a solid, believable story.

The evidence I've found will back up the theories that (1) Dumbledore is an Animagus, (2) his Animagus form is of a phoenix, and (3) he flew, in phoenix form, out of his ashes at the time of his burial.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

About Animagi

An Animagus

Being able to transfigure yourself into an animal while keeping your mind intact - and still able to think and act like a human. Very few wizards are able to master this ability.

"The animal one turns into as an animagus reflects your personality." - JKR

"The registry"

[PoA - 19]

If you are an Animagus, you are required to register yourself as one with the Ministry ASAP. Failing to do so can meet some severe punishments (Azkaban). This registry is public - Hermione was able to see a list of 7 registered Animagi in the 20th century, and which animal they could turn into. Professor McGonagall is one of these 7, the other 6 are unknown to us. We know that other wizards (Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, James Potter, Rita Skeeter, etc) have this ability but prefer to keep it a secret, even with the risk of being caught by the Ministry.

Bird as an Animagi

[PS - 6]

Ron, sitting with Harry, received a Chocolate Frog trading card of Morgana le Fey on the train to their first year at Hogwarts. He gave it to Harry, which was the second card Harry had ever seen or heard of. Morgana was a bird Animagus. The first card Harry received was Dumbledore himself.

The only other known bird-Animagus is Falco Aesalon; he was the first ever recorded Animagus. His animal form was a falcon. This information can be found on the HP trading cards.

Dumbledore as an Animagus

If Dumbledore shared the powers of a phoenix, he would be able to re-animate himself from his ashes.

Order of the Phoenix

In the 1970s, Dumbledore got together a group of great wizards willing to fight against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. This secret organization was called none other than "Order of the Phoenix". This was Dumbledore's Order. This is the most obvious clue we can find, completely overlooked by most readers.

Teaching

[CoS - 13, 17]

Before Dumbledore became a Headmaster, he was working as a Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts (roughly in the 1940s).

The current Transfiguation teacher - McGonagall - is a known and registered Animagus, which is obviously one of the reasons why she is wise enough to teach Transfiguration.

Re-animation

[CoS - 12]

"'Fawkes is a phoenix, Harry. Phoenixes burst into flame when it is time for them to die and are reborn from the ashes. Watch him ...'

Harry looked down in time to see a tiny, wrinkled, new-born bird poke its head out of the ashes."

Dumbledore explains to Harry what happens to a phoenix on their Burning Day. After a phoenix's Burning Day, he will be full-grown again

[HBP - 30]

"Then several people screamed. Bright, white flames had erupted around Dumbledore's body and the table upon which it lay: higher and higher they rose, obscuring the body. White smoke spiralled into the air and made strange shapes: Harry thought, for one heart-stopping moment, that he saw a phoenix fly joyfully into the blue..."

The body was obscured by the flames, and by the time the flames were gone, the table (and what we are supposed to assume is Dumbledore's body) was lowered into the tomb. It's more than possible that Dumbledore's body was burnt to ashes, and the tomb is just another distraction trying to lead to the conclusion that he really is dead.

Why Die?

"Dumbledore has had to step back a little bit from Harry in an effort to teach him some of life's harder lessons." - JKR

Dumbledore's death has made Harry more independant. Harry now realizes he must be the one to kill Voldemort - he has to be the one to hunt down the Horcruxes.

With Dumbledore now gone, Voldemort will be confident enough to rise to his full potential. This will weaken him greatly, in a way, and will give Harry a much better chance at Voldemort (especially if Dumbledore turns up to help).

The fact that Snape killed Dumbledore allows Malfoy to stay free from Voldemort's punishments, without having to face the burden of 'murdering' his headmaster, and will also make Snape more popular with Voldemort.

Dumbledore's Patronus

"What form does Dumbledore̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s Patronus take?

Good question. Can anyone guess? You have had a clue. There was a little whisper there. It is a phoenix, which is very representative of Dumbledore for reasons that I am sure you can guess."

(from an interview with JKR)

Many wizards Patronuses are also the animals they become in their Animagus form For example, the Patronus of James Potter takes the form of a stag. The animal he turns into in Animagus form is also a stag.

Domesticating a Phoenix

In the book Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, J.K. Rowling writes that "phoenix gains a XXXX rating not because it is aggressive, but because very few wizards have ever succeeded in domesticating it".

It's unusual that Dumbledore is able to control Fawkes so well. We know he is a great wizard - but what if he has a unique way of communicating with phoenixes?

We know that an Animagus is able to communicate with certain creatures in a fashion that most wizards wouldn't usually be able to. Peter Pettigrew was able to find out Voldemort's hiding place by talking with rats. Peter takes a rat in his Animagus form, which would explain why he can communicate so well with those creatures.

If Dumbledore was a phoenix Animagus, it would explain the rare ability he has to be able to domesticate phoenixes (namely, Fawkes).

Registered Animagus

If Dumbledore shared the powers of a Phoenix, he would be able to re-animate himself from his own ashes. If any of his enemies knew this ability of his, they would know not to leave his body after he was killed, or they would have at least ensured that no flames could touch the body. Perhaps Dumbledore is an unregistered, and uknown, Animagus. That would explain why no one questioned the phoenix they briefly glimpsed flying from the tomb of Dumbledore.

Other Misc. Info

Dumbledore uses a scarlet quill - presumably from Fawkes. [OotP - 37]

Dumbledore, like Fawkes before his "Burning Day", had been looking "dreadful for days" and looked like death upon arrival back in Hogsmeade after recovering the locket.

Fawkes? - "I am not going to answer about the role in the next books, which probably gives you a big clue, and [Fawkes] has never been owned by anyone but Dumbledore." - JKR

"The animal one turns into as an animagus reflects your personality."

"You become the animal that suits you best." - JKR

Dumbledore has always had an unnatural affinity towards fire, and he has a lot of control over it (much like a phoenix would).
