I don't really enjoy speaking in front of audiences, but I'll do it. The only problem is my voice hasn't changed yet(13) :( and it sounds wicked wierd and annoying, not to mention I have a speech impediment, so I get made fun of a lot. I hate it. :?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ah yes. That's my main problem too. I can memorize a ten minute speech with a cue card or two, I can be calm and comfortable, but I can't make my voice not sound like a girls.

I hated speaking in front of people when my voice was changing. What made it even worse it my voice changed twice. The second time was when I was 15 so none of the other guys sounded funny and I got picked on but it was mostly just playfully from friends/family. I actually never realise how deep my voice was until I heard it on a video and was quite surprised. But you don't need to feel bad about not having your voice change yet. I've seen 14/15 year old freshman who still have their high pitched voice ;) Those are the guys who get made fun of.. Ever heard a )white) freshman male with a high pitched voice try to act like he's a "gangsta"? It's halarious. :XD:

Oh yeah. Reading a post here reminded me to only one reason I have with public speaking.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I have a speech impediment. I can't say "Or". It comes out as "Ur". So Four is Fur. I don't know how to pronounce or!

I'm the class clown in a lot of my classes, but I can only talk while sitting behind people, in a desk, hidden :) But once I get to the front of the class, everything changes. I basically am not my self anymore, I am some kid who's words tumble out of his mouth, and sounds like I am about to cry :D I give teachers a lot of props. I'd be SOL as a teacher.

I went through that stage of being a bit nervous, especially foreign language speaking exams. But with presentations now i'm fine, it doesn't phase me.

Speaking to an audience scares me so much.

Its rather easy for me, those are the subjects I get the best grades in. Dutch, French, English, German, its all the same to me :) . Those are the only subjects where I get compliments in.. But anyway, just get up there and start speaking. I really don't know what you guys are afraid for.

I've never had a problem with speaking to others, and i rarely get nervous on stage, if you know your content you shouldn't have anything to worry about it, it's your own fault if you don't know it well enough and you stuff. Be confident in your abilities. I agree with Beanonator, i really don't see what all the fuss is about.

When I was a kid I stuttered, fairly badly (every third or so word); I used to despise ANY sort of oral presentation. I don't even know when I stopped. I remember taking an after school class to help curb how often it happened, but I really don't think it helped much.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Whats amusing now is that I work in retail and essentially spend almost every minute of my day on the floor talking to customers - selling them products, or talking up a sale, etc. I have no problems with that because it's in reference to subject mater that I know in depth and enjoy discussing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Whenever it was a forced topic (ie: selected assessment in education), I never went too good. No passion ftl.

I think what most people are afraid of is just giving a bad presentation/messing up and looking stupid. I know that is what I was afraid of, so I would get nervous because of that. But I soon realized that getting nervous is what lead me to give a bad presentation. I don't know why, but that usually helped me feel more relaxed, because I knew if I wanted to do good I would have to relax a bit. Also remember if you mess up a few times, it is not a big deal, just keep going, no one cares. I think that is another big point, no ones cares. Cause its true.

One time, I was in an acting contest as Cinderella. I had to do a short little peice and some dialogue. I was so nervous I CRIED on stage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I guess the judges thought it was part of my acting. I ended up winning it :D This was about 5 years ago when I was 8.

I used to hate public speaking with a passion. I only hated it when I was doing it with people that I didnt know, I used to hate teachers who would make us present things on like the first week of school about ourselves with someone we dont know, its the worst feeling ever.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If its a class that I have a lot of friends in, then I actually ASK if I can share my work because I know them and feel comfortable. This goes back to my old theory that people you do better in classes with friends because you feel more comfortable

I actually get up and do my speech but act a bit stupid on purpose so everyone laughs and the teacher would give me a good grade for an entertaining speech. Theres nothing really to be nervous about i know every single person of my class so good it doesnt really matter.

For some people, it comes naturally. Too bad I'm not one of those people.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I used to be horrified at the thought of public speaking. I remember my legs were shaking while I stumbled on my words when I did a book report in 10th grade. I'm still not that great at doing it, but I'm much better at it -- just practice and just forget what everyone thinks about you. They're probably just as nervous as you are. And remember, some people aren't even listening.

Wow. You are getting up infront of your friends, they are your grade etc..I don't see why you would be afraid. Not that big of a deal, it's just words?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I consider a lot of people friends, but I go to a school with 1,700 other students. I'm comfortable being in front of a group of my close friends, but when I'm in front of a class of 30-40 students I hardly know, I get nervous. Oh, and I'm no good with words verbally. I'm not so bad on paper though and this nice little spell checker on the Google toolbar helps me out here and there ;) Speaking of which, I want everyone who doesn't have at least somewhat decent spelling skills to download the Google toolbar and spell check your post before submitting it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Haha. Same here, but they are just people, like yourself. Therefore I'm not afraid of merely speaking infront of them the language that all of us were taught, I go to a 1700+ school also.
