so ur saying survival of the richest is good? every player should be treated equally(except the members they need to have more rights).

Most of the people buying these things got their money in a non-honest way(scam, scam friends, steal accounts, lie or wildy).

Hoo boy do I hate people like this -.-

Looking at your stats, I see that you have 3 million (ish) xp total.

I have more then that in my mining alone (my highest skill).

I've put more effort into my mining level then you have into your whole account. (currently lvl 86)

I also have a green halloween mask.

Guess which of these 2 things in rs took more effort on my part?

That's right, the mask.

So, why the hell should I have to give up something that took more effort then you've put into your whole account just because you don't like rares?

Admittedly I wouldn't be all that wounded if jagex were to remove all rares from the game, as I no longer play it. However, when I bought my mask they were selling for 9mil (I was and still am an f2per, so making the money was no easy task ), and I shudder to think of what it would be like for someone who's just recently bought a mask, or even worse, a phat, to lose all that simply because someone thought it would be a good idea to remove them from the game.

Hey, while we're at it, why not remove skills from the game as well? I mean it's just not fair that higher levelled people can kill things/mine/wc/fish faster then I can just because they've put the time and effort required into getting higher levels in their skills

You know, the funny thing is I have NEVER,EVER, seen a SINGLE logical argument against rares. It's always some whiny 10-year-old who thinks that just because they can't get one it means that

1)No one can get them

and

2)They should be removed from the game.

All other arguments aside, you can't really expect the general rs public to agree with you if you can't even back up what you're saying, so try again, and this time actually tell people WHY jagex should remove something from the game because players are willing to pay a lot for it.

Quit runescape, now playing EVE-Online(Mail Cambarus and say hi  )

This topic is idiotic. It's basically been proven as fact that there's no reason that rares should be removed, and additionally rares are beneficial in so many ways to this game. This thread is so 5 years ago.

I'm being serious. Could we change this subforum so you can't make new topics but can only reply, and only topics that are verified to be of high quality from the rants board get moved here? People with rants are unable to differentiate whether their rant is really worth serious discussion or not, and this is a good example of that. I mean if nothing else comes out of this, at least put this topic on the list of banned topics to start rants about.

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

To be honest i am rather shocked at the way these 'holiday' items have turned out. jagex dropped those items as a gift to those who supported them back in the earlier days and there players have exploited them. Those items were meant as a gift and a bit of fun to the original player who supported them. Yet jagex is caught in a bind if they give people cash value for the items and remove them. People will be angry that they no longer have them. If they make them untrade-able than people will get angry that they can't make money off them and the 'lazy' people would quit runescape as they don't have an easy money makes anymore. So their hands are really tied. If they want to function as a business then they need to keep players and unfortunately to a lot of people that is what runescape is about the so called rares. Jagex just needs to re drop them even though they would decrease in value everyone would stop their crying. They could even create a seperate version of the party hats etc and use them as a holiday item. Players would have their own version of a party hat and a lot of people wouldn't bother.please forgive the formatting i am on my phone. :)

What brilliant and revolutionary ideas that I haven't heard before! Redropping party hats would fix everything!

Oh wait. There isn't a problem needing fixing.

Dead topic. Dead issue.

Jagex is going about it in a sneaky way.

Construction?

3rd Age Armor?

Skill Capes?

All of these are targeted specifically at reducing rare values by either providing some other status symbol or directly removing cash from the game.

And guess what, it's worked. Rares have been stable for 6 months, which is totally unheard-of.

Most of the people buying these things got their money in a non-honest way(scam, scam friends, steal accounts, lie or wildy).

Wow, just wow. That is the worst gneralization I think I've ever heard. Most people that buy rares DO NOT scam to get them. How did you even come to that conclusion? Also, why is the wilderness a non-honest way? Jagex put it there for a reason, and that reason wasn't to "cheat"

image002cc6.gif

im level 76 and IM NOT A NOOB 30- is a noob
All of these are targeted specifically at reducing rare values [...]
I can see that making sense, but I'm still a little unclear on the motivation here. Maybe I'm short-sighted, but I've never really seen rares as a "problem" to be fixed - is there a reason for Jagex to stabilize/defame rares, or is that simply a happy coincidence?

Just curious.

A bit of speculation on the motivation. Two points to look at in the economy (as far as rares go):

1. The amount of money that is easily created and brought into game.

2. The gold piece limit/cap (not sure if I remember the amount correctly) of approximately 2.1 billion gp. Add in the rumor (fact?) that anyone passing that limit would lose all their money.

With rares raising in price over time, at some point the economy would have to stabilize itself or possibly start to crash. As the prices would become too high, and players wouldn't be able to sell them, without risking their savings. A "governing force" is needed to keep an economy in check. Therefore, Jagex has started to take measures to try to stem the rise in prices, and try to balance the economy.

If left on it's own, it could cause it's own depression. What would happen if rares actually reached a point where players decided that it was too much money to buy for anymore? There would still be money continuing to come into game even after that point but nothing to spend it on, or less to spend it on as rares would slowly go back down to more reasonable prices at that time. And if rares were going down in prices, would players really want to sink that much money into them?

And that's enough babling from me, not sure if I made any sense, but it sounded good in my head.... :P

If Jagex ever made a perfect update, there would be players complaining about nothing to complain about.

[hide=My Stats]Jake_Corsair.png[/hide]

In a MMORPG, you need to have goals, be it picking cabbages, getting 99's, staying in touch with friends/ clan members, or just saving up to buy a piece of history. Without a long term goal such as this, the MMO loses its touch, it has nothing to look forward to or to work towards, and thus there would be no real economy and not many players (especially members would be quite totally depleted unless they have become a member for the skills).

2. The gold piece limit/cap (not sure if I remember the amount correctly) of approximately 2.1 billion gp. Add in the rumor (fact?) that anyone passing that limit would lose all their money.

Its a fact, at least, if it is based off of the same way that lineage II did it. And I know for a *fact* that in lineage II if you go above 2.1bil it will turn into a negative number.

*lots of stuff*
Lord, how I love speculation. :D

I've been of the opinion that Jagex holds some certain... discontentment... for rares in general for some time. Not exactly for "exploitation", as Shaz goes on about, but something similar to it. Otherwise, they would likely have gotten around to pumping the store value of rares by now, so that you wouldn't risk losing them if you whitescreen during a random. The later holiday items would likely be tradeable as well...

What would happen if they continued to rise in price, to the point where they become unachievable to virtually anyone who doesn't already have one? Well, they would lose significance - nobody's going to chase a pipedream. Assuming they don't really want to support rares, Jagex would most likely consider that a good thing. The gong-show would finally be over, and people would find something else to do. In any case, what you suggest would actually be a move by Jagex to protect rares. That's not entirely unfeasible, seeing as rares still exist, but I do maintain some doubt.

Okay, conspiracy theory time. \:D/

Pure essence - suddenly, obscenely rich 2x nature crafters are forced to pass a larger portion of their profit down to the players mining essense, which has virtually no requirements.

Construction - several kinds of logs, including oak (lv 15) and teak (lv 35) suddenly have a reasonable market.

Skill capes - unidentified herbs, several kinds of seeds, dragonhides, raws as low as lobsters, bars as low as steel (and so on) have improved markets. The prices don't necessarily go out of control, but there are far more (rich) buyers.

The punchline - is it possible that Jagex is trying to force a redistribution of the net wealth within the game, to discourage scamming/begging/newcomers quitting? If so, perhaps the effects on rares are, as I've suggested, a happy coincidence.

Many people would stop RS because they spended lot's of time earning money.

And they are a huge part of RS economy.

The punchline - is it possible that Jagex is trying to force a redistribution of the net wealth within the game, to discourage scamming/begging/newcomers quitting? If so, perhaps the effects on rares are, as I've suggested, a happy coincidence.

I give them a little more credit than this, though it's pretty sneaky. I think that they know exactly what rares mean to the game, and I know for a fact that they don't like it (see Jmod posts on new tradable holiday items). They also know that they can't make them go away - so instead, let's take cash out of the game.

They also know that you can't keep rares from growing forever with a single money draining or new status symbol update - so what do they do? These big updates are spread in such a way, I feel, that they pop the rares increase before it can get started again.

It's a brilliant move, if they want to get rid of rares, but I have to say that mega expensive armor isn't exactly a good solution. That's like getting an alcoholic addicted to tobacco instead of alcohol.

From Jagex's point of view, it may be that they are happy with the tobacco solution, if only because it once again gives them direct control over the top of the economic system. Prices too high? Increase third age drop rates. Too low? Do the opposite.

This is something Duke and I have discussed a little bit, but it's still a fledgling idea (at least on my side).

Oh, and note how just a little bit of pressure in the right direction can make a dead thread show promise.

I guess I'll copy paste my reply to swampjedi in pm here:

Is it just me, or has the rares market been stagnant for 6 months?

It has indeed. The current prices of all rares are all within a ~15% range of the prices exactly a half year ago, some are slightly higher and some are slightly lower.

There was that blip a few weeks after construction (santas were close to 30m), but it tanked quickly. I'm thinking that Jagex is purposely trying to keep prices down.

Yes - Jagex has certainly been implementing features in the game that help fight the inflation and even the popularity of rares. Not only was construction a major money drain (although according to my own calculations far from countering the inflation), it also allowed rich people to spend their stashes of money on something 'useful'.

One other important reason rares have always been so popular and cost so much is because rich people have nothing useful to spend their cash on - Jagex has been giving rich tons of substitutes for rares throughout the years, starting with dragon armour.

Still, I don't believe these pseudo-rare are really suitable in stopping rares from continuing to go up in price - at least not as long-term solution - as pseudo-rare items always drop in price on the long-term. However, I have to say that the other side of this story could be that Jagex may implement new pseudo-rare items more regularly, which might prevent rares extremely (perhaps even totally) from growing anywhere near as fast in price as they used to.

It's hard to say though - Jagex has always been the most unreliable factor when it comes to the game's economics and predicting the future of rare prices.

I don't know the history of prices, but it seems that this flat line in prices is unprecedented.

Flat lines in the prices of rares are rare (:P), but it has happened before in the past. It usually happens after extreme rises in the prices of rares as kind of "stabilization period".

In this case, that was probably the initial reason why the market was going sideways too, as in the one month before the current sideway fluctuation, the prices of practically all rares doubled. For comparison: on average, throughout the past years, rares grow ~15% per month in price.

Still, the period that rares have been going sideways is starting to become kind of long. Similiar periods in the past have never lasted longer than 3-4 months tops. The stabilization period should long be over by now and rares should continue to go up - but they neglect to do so.

To be honest I have been thinking about this for quite a while already, but I cannot seem to come up with a suitable answer for the continuing sideways fluctuation... As far as I know, the money supply in RuneScape is still growing fast and the player population is still growing as well (although less then it used to). Unless I'm missing something important, I can only conclude that rares should go up in price again sooner or later.

Though, if Jagex can keep up with bringing out new high cost pseud-rare items, the expectancy that rares will go up sooner or later again may never become true. Bottom line is that Jagex has much power over the direction of rares and the direction of the game's economy.

2. The gold piece limit/cap (not sure if I remember the amount correctly) of approximately 2.1 billion gp. Add in the rumor (fact?) that anyone passing that limit would lose all their money.

The money used to go into the negative. Jagex has corrected that and now you just can't accept any money if it gets you more then ~2.1bil gp.

but I have to say that mega expensive armor isn't exactly a good solution.

Hm, whats the problem with expensive armor?

I think JAGeX are actually trying to combat the 'rare' crisis with more and more releases, and more and more armours/items.

Look at construction. A week before santas and masks were looking at 30,37,50m. When it were released they were 20,25,38m ish... Recently they've stayed relatively the same in price.

As for Phats, they're way to uncontrable in price for any update to control.

Conclusion: Dont remove them, just promote the idea that items>rares.

Gin, that's what I said. Please, if you're going to post, contribute something new or at least do more than summarize another post.

Duke, I have no problem with expensive armor - my point was that it's trading one drug for another. I think, in the end, the solution that Jagex wants is much more equity in wealth distrubtion and more control over the economy. I'm saying that they don't have control currently, but that's only because they've been lax. They can take control whenever they want, and I think we're seeing the first of it now.

I do know that my time of buying new rares with cash made from skilling is over. I'm going to keep what I have (at least the phat), but no more.

I agree with swamp. My santa hat was given to me by a quitting friend, back when they were only 500k, so i did not use time and effort to get that. All the same, it is probably my most valued item, and i would never consider selling it.

And the bottom line is that it would be extremely cruel to remove items that players have spent their whole rs careers vying for (I know someone already said that).

Being the smart person you are even you would know that jagex don't make the prices money hungry players do. They don't have a use now, greedy players will use anything to make money because they are too lazy to put any effort into skilling and raising money that way. These so called are still meant to show how long you've played for you can't even show that now and yes a lot of people care what they were brought into to game. They have no use now other than exploitation.

Not a fan of capitalism, eh? These kinds of things exist in the real world and people aren't freaking out about them. If you came to America early and got free land, it's now really expensive. I could list more analogies, but my point is that some things get rare over time, even if they were originally not intended to be an expensive item.

Also, your argument that party hats are greedy items is completely subjective. Are stocks also for greedy people? Some people just enjoy making money by merchanting. Is the act of accumulating money greedy? You kind of need money to function in this game, and sorry if merchanting is the most efficient way to make it. I'm not going to sit at a coal rock for hours on end chugging away earning it the 'hard-working-man's' way. Party hats have nothing to do with being lazy. I don't think "Oh, I'd like a billion gp but I don't want to earn it myself so I'll buy party hats." That's just a weird train of thought. I have party hats, and it's convenient, but you're really just attaching all of these bad connotations to them because they seem so distant and unfair to you.

I can't even believe I typed all of this out to be honest. It's such a dead argument. I'm not going to argue this point any further. Not to be arrogant, but just assume any point you bring up on this issue anyone can counter, because through my years of posting here, I've seen it all countered.

Don't think Jagex can control prices? Do you honestly think they didn't aim construction to change the market? In the end, the exact price is player set, but the direction is set by Jagex. I'm sure you know how the price of a ranger set goes up every time more TT items are released?

Greedy players too lazy to earn cash by skilling? My dear shaz, the three rares that I have came directly from skilling profits. So, I'd appreciate it if you took your gross misgeneralizations elsewhere. Let me give an example. I think you'd be offended if I said only ugly fat girls play runescape, right (Note that I don't believe this)? Same idea.

Exploitation is a very strong word. Are my rares taking cash out of your pocket, or anyones? NO. Quit the drama, it has no place in a debate.

PKMario, quit the freaking spam. Contribute or get out. I want to you understand that I am reporting every bit of spam, so you're just getting a bad rep with the staff.

Edit: Thanks whoever DELETED his post.

Well let's look at what we have.

Easter Egg (unequippable)

Pumpkin (unequippable)

Disk of Returning (unequippable)

Half Wine (unequippable)

Halloween Mask

Party Hat

Christmas Cracker (unequippable)

Imagine the US Economy. We have blue collar workers mining, farming, line manufacturing (smelting), working construction, etc. These workers bring in raw materials and provide assembly and sales to everyone. In return they are paid a modest salary that gets them by. Most are content.

Then there are white collar workers. They work in manufacturing (RE: high level smithing, upper herblore, runecraft, etc.) These people get paid more AND get stock benefits. But wait, due to insurance the bank only allows a certain amount of coinage to be deposited. So what do they do?

They invest. Entry level employees get Easter Eggs, Pumpkins and the like. As their portfolio matures they reinvest for better stocks, finally picking up a mask or phat. Maybe they become an executive and get a Christmas Cracker as a bonus. In the end the executive either retires, quits, or is fired and all the wealth they have accured goes with them. This in turn makes everyone elses stock go up.

But then we go back to the blue collar workers. A few think they can do more and train extra-hard and save every coin they can. Eventually they reach the threshold and cross over to entry level white collar.

NOW: Imagine the stock market crashes and all the rares are gone. Ever heard of the Great Depression? The white collars have nothing as all their money was tied up in stock. Therefore, they can't pay for the supplies the blue collars were making and everyone gets layed off. While the white collars get by the blue collars die in the streets homeless.

So, in conclusion, who wants to get rid of rares now? The players without rares.
