Stance on dogs with violent reputations?

Featured Replies

I've never been fond of these kind of dogs. Rotts, German shepherds, pitbulls, etc. Any dog can kill yeah, but these are the majority - especially pitbulls recently.

Banning them is not something I agree with (though pits are banned here in ON), I think that people who want to have pets like these should earn a license proving they're decent pet owners. Dogs like these are practically weapons.

A dog is only as violent as the owner makes it.

I'd like to get a rottweiler, so you can figure I wouldn't want to see these kinds of dogs banned. I think if more people raised their dogs well, they wouldn't be as likey to bite/attack people. I've seen some badly abused dogs and I don't understand how anyone could do that to their dogs. And then they get upset when their dog bites them or someone else..

Have you ever heard of a Yorkshire Terrier that was bred to kill?

maybe those types of dogs should have to pass a handling class, even though it's not that likely for you to be walking down the street and be mauled by a dog (except in my case, got bit in the leg by a stray chihuaua while walking my puppy), though it would calm those who worry about it.

maybe if some people werent idiots about their dogs they wouldnt be as violent.

i once saw on T.V. that people raised dogs to fight each other for money and they would bet on which dog would win. :(

no, [rooster] fights are still here. they just say dogs as another way to make money.

My mates dog had to be put down because it attacked an Avon Lady (one of the ladies which come around to your door to sell you cosmetics). He got it from the pound 5 or so years before it was put down and was fine it's whole life (besides a little nip here and there) until it turned on the Avon Lady. Luckily it wasn't any serious injury she got, but they had to put the Dog down as they could get sued if it attacked and hurt someone again. And they knew it was the right decision. Especially as they now had a little child.

To puppy pic:TOO CUTE, IT BURNS!

to put down dog:Well, I could sue for killing an innocent animal.

to topic:Banning gods=NO

Sir, the Panzerschreck squad is blocking the road!

I think dogs that have been specifically bred for fighting should be banned, because they have such a violent nature.

But all dogs can show violent tendencies, even the most adorable ones. I don't have a problem with big dogs, as long as you never entirely trust a dog and train it well you should be okay. I think I fancy a golden retriever myself.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

This is a hard on. We have the fact the these things can kill, and at the same time in the right hands they can be great pets. Im think they should only be given to people who wont turn them into killing machines. I guess do it the same waywe handle guns, you need a license and they keep a record. Though honestly i cant see why you cant just get another type of dog, but to each there own i guess.

Umm yeah, I read in a newspaper awhile ago one of those attacked a police officer, and was describe as "more fearsome(sp?) then a pitbull". Least I think it was a Yorkshire Terrier, anyway it was a breed of dog you wouldn't expect to do that. So CrimsonKing is right. My sister knew someone who had a Rott, not the sterotypical(sp?) type. So yes it is how they are raised.

I agree, owners must be held more accountable.

The government should publish a list of what it considers to be dangerous dogs.

If a particular dog is on that list, then you must obtain a "Dangerous dog licence" (but only if you're applying for a new dog, so current owners with an animal ages over 10 years are excluded).

Also, that dog must wear specific items when outdoors, attended or otherwise.

These items would include, but not be limited to, a brace lead (gives walker much more control of dog movements), and a muzzle.

He can't be serious then. A Yorkie at the most would weigh what? 7 lbs (imagine a 15.4" laptop)? A pitbull can weigh 10x that.

I agree that it is how they are raised, but these kind of dogs (especially since some of them are bred to fight) require a lot more experience to handle.

My god.. That was very moving.

I'm quite upset that dogs are sometimes bred to kill.

It seems unnatural and completey unnecessary.

Yorkshire terriers are probably alongside Jack Russells on the vicious and attack scale. They can hurt, but not likely to kill.

Problem is, dogs such as Mastiffs, Boxers, Pit bullls were used in bear baiting (and of course security) and were originally bred to be agressive. But nowadays it should have been bred out.

They had an interview on the BBC with a Pit Bull breeder. Like many other breeders, he will not sell a dog to a person who does not act or seem resonable. But, the same can't be said for kennel or abandoned dogs, the charity or kennel are just happy to get rid of them. :|

I, myself, own a boxer dog. She has to be one of the wimpiest dogs ever. :P She only barks when being playful and although she can bite, she won't. In the end it's down to how the owner treats them.

"Dangerous Dogs Act", pfft. Why label a certain dog more ferocious than another? A dog may be stronger than another, but that doesn't make it dangerous.

knkcopy.jpg

Pit bulls, German Shepard's, Rotweillers, and Dobermans are as placid as any other dog. When the owner mistreats them and starves them, then they turn mean.

Not true, most viloent breed of dogs depend on the breed.

I was doing my paper round earlier, and when i pushed a paper through this door, the dog jumped up madly (i think it was a germa shepard) and bit the paper from out of the letter box. I think that if the door wasnt there, then i would have been seriously injured.

The problem is that people just say they have potentially dangerous dogs which are not aggressive, but that is because they are good owners and have tamed the dog appropriately. The government should not call them 'dangerous dogs' but 'potentially dangerous dogs'. It is a FACT that some dogs have violence in their genes more than others, for example a pitbull is potentially more aggressive than a Yorkshire Terrier. Personally I think that banning is not the answer, as banning does not reach out as far as the black market, and anyway, it is inhumane. So I think that 'Potentially Dangerous Dogs' should be slowly bred out, placing taxes and restrictions on breeding owners (and the dogs, for example number of litters per year) of that type, and increase the cost of keeping those dogs gradually, until it is not worth the trouble of keeping them. Yeah, maybe it will not remove the threat instantly, but it will be much more effective in the long run than any other method.

Its really all on the owner, but if you guys feel that upset over it, maybe something should be made to show if a person is compitant enough to raise one of these.

Certain breeds have the potential to be meaner. Like, a Chihuahua isn't going to eat your face off, but a Pitbull would. But it still depends on how they're raised.

You should have to have a permit to own ANY large-breed dog in my opinion, and the people giving out permits should heavily use stereotyping when issuing them. The people will the violent dogs are always the same...They look like hicks.

Being buying Pitbull's aren't helping them. Most people are buying them for the "cool" factor knowing that they CAN rip someone's face off. They're not being trained to do so, though. My sister's boyfriend bought one because he thought they were cool, and the dog turned out to be a big, moronic moose. :P

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

as far as german shepards, I almost laughed at them being considered an agressive dog. they were bred to herd, and herding dogs were bred too bite very little, only unless nippping cattles heels, I have known a lot of german sheperds and not one of them has ever showed the slightest sign of agrresion.
