Gin_and_Tonic
Now, many of you may not know what conforming is, so to stop all the spamming, 'W0tz c0nf0rm1ng', I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ll define it. 'Conforming is adapting the behaviours and views of a reference group, due to a real or mentally induced pressure'. Now, an example for those who need it: Simple: Your friends smoking, you dont like smoking, but do it anyway as he and your 'pressure group' all seem to be enjoying it. Whether or not they're actually 'out casting' you as you dont smoke, or its just psychologically induced 'exclusion', you still conform. Does this sound familiar? (Obviously not just the smoking issue, theft, alcohol abuse, or even a certain game you don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t like but still play) ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s not all bad. What are your views on conforming? Is it the right thing to do? Should people conform in certain situations? If you feel you need to conform, are you with the right people? Lets see what YOU think. I'll give my answer as a guideline: Personally, i dont conform. On a Saturday night, about 80% of my friends go up the park, drink, smoke etc, and then rave about it all week until the following Saturday. I DO NOT go up the park... I think its pathetic, and personally i'd rather be sat at home on Off Topic talking the (minus a few exceptions) the people on here - As, with reference to my friends, they have mentally surpassed the age of 13. However, there are times when i feel the need to conform - For example at work. I work in a sport shop (part time), so naturally most of the employees and 'lads' shall we say. Now im not at all 'ganzta' but i feel a 'need' to maybe change my attitude when interacting to the other staff. As they're not personally a friends of mine, I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢d probably put my conforming down to an imagined pressure, but think about it.... 50 staff, and 1 proper gentleman, I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢d be a sitting duck... Am i right to conform? Probably not, but i do, as i like to get into work, get out, no hassle... It may sound like i've contradicted myself, but like i said, work is not my social group, they do not make me conform, i chose to on the basis of an easier, general atmosphere at work. What im doing is not against my morals, such as smoking/drinking etc is, its just the way my staff portray me - Maybe i dont want them to know me for who i am? I dont know. Well, lets hear your thoughts.

jemathonical
I sometimes conform. But normally I just be myself, I don't really give in to peer pressure. But when I get my job, I'll change myself, be more nice etc ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it!

Guest
Yeah we all need a little conformity in our lives, or else we'd be known to the general population as freaks, and you wouldn't want that would you. Though I think over-dosing on conformity is such a low personal trait, and not having any uniqueness about you isn't something I like in a person.

indy500fan
Heh, you defined conform not thinking anyone knows what it means. 90% of kids age 12-17 go through at least one stage where they complain about conformity and proclaim themselves "non-conformists". All of us older folks look back on those years and find it funny how naive we were. :D

Geez I was so stupid -_- Belive it or not I never did have a "major" OMG COMFORMITY stage. I mean I always somewhat despised the "cool kids" in high school but it was mostly because a lot of them were pretty thick and stupid ;p. I'd say I conform a little bit. Sir_Alex85
Clothing wise, I wear what's comfortable. T-shirt and jeans are good for me every day. Some band shirts...some collar shirts. It's all good. As for conforming to ideas and behaviour, I spose I conform a bit to my friends. But it goes both ways. So we all end up building off of eachother, if that makes sense. ;P It really has
yomom1919
Conforming is usually a refrence to a whole of standards in society. Your friends would actually be the non-conformists, but i still understand what your saying. Yes, I do conform to society, unless I see a reason not to. Non conformists that do not conform with society, for no reason at all, really annoy me. You mentioned that your friends "mentally surpassed the age of 13". Could you please elaborate? Are you saying your friends are mature just because they drink and smoke? Or did i just misunderstand you?

What's not to get? Con+forming= forming cons, the creation of negatives. Or it could also mean creating convicts. And it makes sense too. When you 'conform to society', you create negatives/bad things or enemies which can turn to convicts. Me doing staff.

This is going to sound really stupid, but...huh? Could you please explain? :-k Aside from viktors blatent obviousness ( :P ) you pretty much have to conform to some things. Hell, your "conforming" technicly because you wear cloths. Wearing clothing is the normal thing to do! But other than the stupid example I can almost bet you that you conform to something here or there. For example, I can almost bet you (again) that you dress a lot like your friends, am I right? And don't tell me that it just happened out of coincidence ;p. Also, don't tell me "but I like to dress like that". Well, those people wearing expensive clothing like to dress like whatever they dress like too. Your still generaly sticking to something though if you like it or not. Eh, sorry if I rambled on a bit.. hopefully you get the idea :/. You can't just blatently say that conformity is bad because, quite frankly, some people need to conform. Viktorkrum77
Conforming CAN make you happy. Maybe if you're one of the few people who finds cons pleasing. On the flip side, you all know I'm not being serious right? Me doing staff.
deloriagod
I used to be the big nonconformist who was always trying to stay away what was popular. But this year I decided it was more work to be a nonconformist than it is to be a conformist. So now I do what I need to in order to fit in and I'm enjoying school a lot more. And so, conforming has made me happy. But don't expect me to conform to some things.. Internet Marketing For Newbies
