Global Warming

Recommended Posts

Well i recently heard some sort of statistic saying 100% of the credible scientific community believes in global warming, but only around 50% of Americans do. I have watched Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and yes, I do believe in global warming.

How about you?

Please provide reasons that you do not, as I would be very interested in hearing them :D .

You can argue all you like on possible causes of global warming but you'd be a fool to say it's not happening at all.

Pfft. It's nothing special. Earth's been cooling and warming for billions of years.

In fact, I'm in the middle of the biggest Ice Storm I've ever been in.

Man's contribution to greenhouse gases is less than 5%. Volcanoes, cow farts, agricultural fields, etc will forever put out much more than we can.

That hole in the ozone layer's been there for thousands of years, too. It's actually smaller than the big CFC scare nowadays.

The first step to accepting global warming is to accept that it is going to happen. But that doesn't mean we are going to die, and we don't even know when it will happen. All we can do now is try to limit it as much as we can, or hope the world does itself. Which it will, but who knows if society will die out or not in the progress.

So you're telling me, cow farts and farms polute more than all the cars and factories in the world :?:

The penguins down there must have anti-radiation suits eh?

To quote A: You realize there are more animals in the world than cars, right? Our rectums do not have catalytic converters. There is more farm area in the world than makes up all the roads in the world. Every time that field is plowed, it emits a huge volume of greenhouse gas.

Have you ever seen a Harvest Moon? See how completely distorted the sky is? That's all farm gas.

To quote B:

The hole is not sufficient enough to allow Sol's radiation in great amounts. It's not really even a hole, just a weakened section. If it was an actual hole, our entire planet would be devoid of atmosphere.

All the CFC propaganda movies from the 80's were "what if's" in case the entire atmosphere melted away. With the disuse of CFC's, that's extremely unlikely to ever happen.

Case in point: it's not enough solar radiation to hurt animal life, the little animal life that actually exists down there. Remember that most Antarctic life lives on the coast, while the interior is completely uninhabited (and the 'hole' is above the interior).

Heh, I doubt rising seas will kill us. Sure, we might have to abandon some cities, but that won't kill us. More dependancy on air travel until the waterline levels, but shouldn't be a problem these days.

If it happened 100 years ago, it would suck, but not now.

It might not kill the human race, but it sure would kill the world's economy and trade systems. That in itself means the less rich countries would have a hell of a time getting aid, and hence many of them may die as a result. Rising sea levels = major anarchy.

And as for whether or not global warming is happening, obviously it is as the greenhouse effect has been proven and we emit greenhouse gasses. Even though our emmisions may not be as much as natures, it dosen't mean we shouldn't try to do something about it. Some pollutants that are spewed into the air on a constant bases aren't easily broken down and some can kill you.

As for 50% of americans not believing in global warming, hmm. Well they are the biggest users and biggest emitters so they may want to protect thier way of life.

Could you give a source for that statistic please?

I found a source that backs him up, not surprisingly - Source 1

Another - Source 2

I'll have to be honest and say I didn't know that the gap between natural and man made emissions was so huge...

There are specials all the time about global warming on tv. Its commonly known.

5% though do you really believe that? I mean yes there are more animals than humans. However, we contribute with; transport, power staions, lighting, factories etc. which use directly/indirectly contribute to carbon emmissions 2/7. Cows fart but not 24/7 out of giant funnels into the sky.

Another thing, the only reason Bush has taken so long to tackle global warming is because he didnt want to rock the boat before the last election and afterwards he didnt want to hurt his popularity rating by having Americans drive sensible sized cars.

So really its all a big blow up? Hmm I'm confused.

humans' effect on it is a blow up, the event itself isnt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming

theres a link to some charts that will show you the reality of it. it really is big.

You should never use Wikipedia as a source, im sure you can make quick refrences to it, but its very unreliable...

im making a refrence to the charts, not the article.

the charts used are not wikipedia's charts. they are from scientific orginazations. i cited wiki because they could be found in one place there.

I dont like Al Gore or Global Warming, but sadly both still exist.

coincidence? eliminate al gore, and eliminate global warming.

well, even if it doesnt eliminate global warming, it would definitely make the world a better place.

ill have to agree with barihawk on this one. it's being blown way out of proportion. you know why they didnt care about global warming hundreds of years ago? they didnt have the technology to know it existed.

The earth has been warming and cooling for years yes, since the birth of plant life oxygen was introduced to the atmosphere which significantly cooled the earth.

global warming isn't natural, with the constant increase in change I think its like by 2080 the temperature will go up 4+ degrees, the most significant changes won't just be the change in climates, im sure we'd deal with it.. But the raise in water levels. We're gonna loose land, with our population increasing so rapidly that definately not a good thing.

Wrong. There wasn't major global warming back then. They wasn't huge polluting factories and no cars.

i think its been established several times that factories and cars are hardly the one cause of global warming, with evidence to back it up. or maybe i just posted without reading the whole topic.
