  1. Maths Sudden bursts of understanding Solving problems that require thought Explaining things I find interesting Feeling powerful (either through knowledge or just being a baddass in general) Relaxing for a while without any responsibilities Friends Seeing people I like being happy (...I don't particularly care to see people I dislike being unhappy, though it doesn't bother me as much as if it were someone I liked). ...
  2. Wherever I am, there's always Pooh, There's always Pooh and Me. Whatever I do, he wants to do, "Where are you going today?" says Pooh: "Well that's very odd 'cos I was too. "Let's go together," says Pooh, says he. "Let's go together," says Pooh. 'What's twice eleven?' I said to Pooh, ('Twice what?' said Pooh to Me) ' I think it ought to be twenty-two.' 'Just what I think my self,' said Pooh. 'It wasn't an easy sum to do, But that's what it is,' said Pooh, said he. 'That's what it is,' said Pooh. 'Let's look for dragons,' I said to Pooh. 'Yes, let's,' said Pooh to Me. We crossed the river and found a few-- 'Yes, these are dragons all right,' said Pooh. 'As soon as I saw their beaks I knew. That's what they are,' said Pooh, said he. 'That's what they are,' said Pooh. So wherever I am, there's always Pooh, There's always Pooh and Me. 'What would I do?' I said to Pooh, 'If it wasn't for you,' and Pooh said: 'True, it isn't much fun for One, but Two Can stick together,' says Pooh, says he. 'That's how it is,' says Pooh. --A.A. Milne In fact, A.A. Milne in general is one of my Favourite Poets. I say this every time, but I think a lot of children's poetry (i.e. poetry written for children) is really very good. In a strange way, children have higher standards than a lot of adults, in that if the poem doesn't have some sort of euphony, they're not going to be interested (usually).
  3. I particularly liked the part where Mr. May was yet to arrive with his vehicle, and Jeremy explained that he'd probably said "Hullo" (in May's voice) and they'd shot him then and there.
  4. I get it a lot. It's just a feeling of "Oh wow! DÃÆÃâÃâéjÃÆÃâÃâàvu: this has so totally happened before, exactly like this!... Oh WOW, it's still happening!". (That's my inner monologue, by the way). In other words, when each new thing happens, I feel as if I'd seen or experienced it before... but I can't predict what's going to happen, or anything -- though it feels almost as if I am. Someone might say something at which point I feel "oh, yeah, I remember this" -- then they continue, and at each new thing that happens I have the same feeling "ah yes -- that's right, that's what happened" and so on.
  5. It does rather come across as if the whole point of bringing up incest as an issue was to have a go at homosexuals.
  6. I like the smell of matches being lit, but more than that, matches or candles being put out. Burning wood, too, I think is nice. Bonfires (so not necessarily wood)... actually, lots of burning things. Car exhaust (sometimes), tar, bread... lots of things, I suppose.
  7. I don't know -- were I to make one myself I think instead of calculating what angle and position each mirror needed I would just align them one at a time out in the sun, adjusting each so that it pointed at some place I'd decided would be the focal point, maybe keeping the others covered up or something. I couldn't really be bothered with all the measuring and thinking "why isn't it working? Is this one out by a little? I wonder if it's this one". Of course, I'd need to keep pointing it at the sun as it moved across the sky, but that wouldn't be too much effort compared to all the horrible measurements I'd have to do otherwise.
  8. If you like the little details (or the really big ones, of course), then Physics is the one for you -- Chemistry is, in a way, just Physics applied to lots of things at once -- so many that sweeping, general statements have to be made. I suppose it's got bits about atoms and electrons and whatnot, but that's just getting into the realms of Physics.
  9. Hehe, reminds me of a friend of mine who used to think that there were: animals, plants, fish, and lizards.
  10. I've been around people who were high who were most certainly not in complete control of their faculties -- though that's not to say that it's bad when taken in moderation (as with alcohol).
  11. We aren't in the USA. I'm entirely with Parabola on this issue. Hypothetically, if you had to break the law to save a loved one's life, and by doing so you wouldn't be hurting anyone, would you really let the loved one die just because "the law's the law"?
  12. No more than I am by other aspects of different cultures. I suppose I'm more interested in religions I don't already know much about.
  13. 2918. Not really that addictive. I have no particular desire to play it again as the start is so boring -- it takes too long to do something that can go wrong in an instant, which is frustrating.
  14. Mayhap you are partially sighted. I've spent lots of time on several; at no point did I consider it a particularly important part of my life.
  15. I'm going to be a game developer (going to school for it, ect.) Sure it doesn't revolve around playing games, but they are important to me. I've nothing against game development, which I think is a good thing (as long as you're going to be one of those folk who do it for fun and other such good reasons as opposed to money -- the bad reason for most games' development these days). I just don't agree with the people for whom playing games is their life -- to me they're fun things that one does in one's spare time.
  16. I really don't care about it that much. I'm slightly surprised when I meet a girl who's into video games (aside from all the anime stuff), but it doesn't tell me much more about them than it would if I found out a guy was into it. I don't see it as an issue. However, the image presented by lots of businesses know, businesses, of pretty girls who play games in skimpy outfits annoys me. Basically, the whole idea of "being a gamer" annoys me. I don't see it as an activity that should be taken so seriously. Fair enough that there are tournaments and things where people earn lots of money (so, fair enough that people do it professionally), but at the end of the day they're computer games.
  17. There's the whole "it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" thing, which would imply that a possibly infinite number of loves gained from an eternity might outweigh the loss of a finite number of loves in a normal lifespan. (This isn't necessarily what I think, but still).
  18. People have been saying that they wouldn't take it because the reasons they like life would die. Other have been saying on other threads that there isn't "the one" (or rather, there aren't "the ones") -- and in this case there could be many reasons for eternal life. Seriously -- there would be so many new people to meet. Doubtless there are people in the world today that I'd really get on with but just haven't met; similarly, in the future I would expect there to be people I'd get on with, even if a past generation of friends had died. What's more, there's the idea that one would get to see the future unfolding: a (perhaps) never ending, completely original story. Some people might get bored of that, of course, but not necessarily. The universe is just too big to exhaust, even if one had an eternity. Without dragging this down into a horrible pseudo-science debate about the universe, some people say it's getting bigger (and I shall leave it at that) all the time; if so, there's always going to be more than enough of it to see (even if it is beige). Hypothetically, if one couldn't die or be harmed, one could simply blast one's body off out into space and see where one went. Another thing: there would be the immense capacity to do good (if you like the idea of good or bad). It might be nasty to have to live for ever, but one could have that warm fuzzy feeling of having done the right thing (some of us call it a conscience) for having performed an eternity of good deeds. If one were invulnerable and immortal, then, if one's ego were big enough to take on the job, one could become a super hero, ÃÆÃâÃâàla Captain Scarlet. I don't know if I'd take it, though.
  19. I don't agree with the practice, though mainly because of all I hear about the results of not consenting to marry the other person. I don't have anything against one's parents choosing a spouse for one as long as one has the option to say no... but that's not the issue. Similarly, I don't have a problem with most traditions that don't mess someone's life up (so I DO have a problem with lots of arranges marriages).
  20. While that's an admirable thing to do, the topics that get the most flaming and trolling are usually about issues which have yet to be solved by the greatest minds, and are unlikely to be sorted out in this forum. I've been posting far less of late, and that's mainly because I don't really have much to add to the topics that I've seen here recently. Often they're religion topics which have been done to death, or at least topics which soon become religion threads. Sometimes I write a post, then think "bah, there's no real point my saying this" and close the tab without submitting. It's a shame, really. I put the lack of topics interesting to me as being down to the moderation and censorship of topics which might have become interesting. That's not really intended as a poke at the moderators or staff -- there are good reasons that most of these threads are closed -- but I do get a bit of a feeling of the forum being aimed (specifically) at children these days.
  21. I don't know if this would have been mentioned yet, or how useful it would be, but last night I used the term "Half-Eight" and was asked to clarify whether or not I meant 7:30 or 8:30. Now, had I been asked by someone from the continent, I wouldn't have been surprised, but the girl was from the USA. (To anyone who doesn't know anyway, if an English person says "half-eight, half-nine, half-twelve, or any other, they mean half past that hour"). When talking to people whose first language isn't British English, I more often find myself noticing their word order and choice of phrases, as opposed to their different vocabulary.
  22. ... when I read that, some cynical part of me immediately went "Blissfull ignorance". No -- that part of you is right, but some people might take the attitude that "if there's nothing else for it they might as well try and enjoy themselves" if you see what I mean.
  23. Not all causes of depression can be resolved by talking to friends or briefly being cheered up by having fun. There isn't necessarily a solution to your problem. Being oneself doesn't always make one feel better, even if it is sensible -- usually. If you can't change what's causing it, just put up with it and you will most likely either find something else that makes things better later on, or get used to it and not be so bothered. Or, if you want a quicker, simpler answer: Each of: your outlook, your expectations, nothing. i.e. you're probably right: lots is wrong with the world in lots of ways. On the other hand, lots of people seem to have a nice time, so it is obviously possible to view things differently somehow.
