If you're looking for profit, just go with red chins right now. When I tried them at my level, it wasn't really all that bad.

For fastest xp, stick with red sallys until level 80 hunter, and then switch to red chins.

Personally I used orange sallys in the desert until 59, and then red sallys until 66.

The portal isn't in the castle, it's behind the castle. And the Rogue's Castle is 10k thieving xp, not smithing.

I got 72 mining today (68k from 73), I might or might not get 73 tomorrow, I'm going outta town so I won't be back until later, and then Thursday I have a track meet, and I don't know when it'll get over. So far, my plan is to mine my 92.5k iron ore (which would put me at like 3.79m xp, which is level 86 and 181k from 87), at which I'd switch my mining focus to coal in the mining guild, but before that, I'll probably play a bunch of Stealing Creation, as I need 184 (or something like that) hammers. Getting 86 mining would probably put me in the middle of May, so I should be able to get all my hammers before I get shipped to basic, and might start on my coal before then too.

Keep mining, Atom! I'm 72 mining (about 68k from 73), and I go to basic training on June 8th, let's see if I can catch up to you by then ;).

I know it's faster to buy for smithing than it is to mine for it, but I'd prefer to mine.

I started to train my mining. I'm going to smith what I mine, so naturally I decided to mine iron and coal. I started mining iron at 67 mining, and I should be level 86 when I start the coal mining. So at around level 86, how long would it take to mine 1k coal at the mining guild?

Wrong. I've trained quite a bit in the new system and get through a full inventory and a tortoise with time to spare. And if you use someone else's house, the burners are usually always lit.
