  1. Before I get into good ol' rhetoric here, I'd like to state that if this client took on the normal functionality of a browser - meaning no extra toolbars, no stat lookup, no NOTHING, make it behave just like a browser, then and only then would I not see it as a 3rd party client advantage. Convenience at the cost of violating a rule/exploiting a grey area? Alright then. I won't debate it with you beyond that point. Thanks for respecting my decision, but under no premise am I aruging about security. I'm only debating about the long standing rule that Jagex has written (and enforced so many times) that is being trampled over. You can tell me it wasn't against the rules because it didn't give you an advantage, but it was meant to. It makes things somewhat convienent, as muggiwhplar said himself. Convenience can be seen as an unfair advantage to those of us that don't trust this source. Again, I care not for security, but for the integrity of the rules that Jagex has set before us. Doesn't anyone really pay attention to those anymore? Or is everyone still hell-bent on looking for a loophole to keep using this program? If you type 30WPM, perhaps you should take typing courses. People pay secretaries somewhat near $13.75/hr if they type over 55WPM or even higher. You can also always upgrade your internet line to DSL at least. Lastly, this is what Mod Burgess had to say about the rioters: 1. The medium-high level gear you've described (Mage short, Iban Staff, Dragon Dagger) all were earned through hard work using the LEGITIMATE way, NOT through a third party. 2. The abilities that I have acquired throughout the game are a direct result of me training them up tirelessly, and not through a third party. 3. If you want to be a high level, you're stuck with two options: Do it the long way or become a member. This again, has NOTHING to do with a third party client.
  2. Technically, a keylogger is NOT a virus. So a virus-specific scan may not pick them up. The good ones, will. I said "virus-specific" scanners, not "virus scanners". Of course a couple of decent "complete" scanners out there will pick them up.
  3. I choose not to use SS because for three reasons: 1. I value my hard disk space; doesn't matter how small you say it is, I can get the exact same functionality out of a browser. Sure, it might not have all the fancy stat lookups and what have you, but it makes me feel much more secure than trusting someone who wrote it specifically for RuneScape. 2. I don't agree with the concept of a worldswitcher. If it were so simple I'd bookmark things in Firefox. 3. More than half the time I'm online, I'm using LINUX (Ubuntu 6.06/6.10). Since it's using IE technology, using anything related to IE on Linux is both pointless, a waste of time and a burn of finding out that Wine won't support it. (And no, I have never used SS. I never plan to either.) EDIT: Technically, a keylogger is NOT a virus. So a virus-specific scan may not pick them up.
  4. Right now it is still banned from use. The only problem is that a new update to it will make it legal to use again. A very poor call on Jagex's part. A very poor call indeed. How am I to feel once the rules, which tens of thousands have been BANNED for, are being circumvented in 48 hours? :(
  5. Finally found another decent sig quote. ------ Listening to the masses of players that were protesting isn't anywhere close to constructive. What happened to the days of old, when Rule 7 was enforced so strictly that more than half of the players were banned for that particular rule...?
  6. What is this?! Jagex reverses their decision to say that 3rd party clients are allowed but ONLY IF they conform to these rules? And I thought Kerry was a waffle. Lookie what we have here. Well that was a kick in the teeth for me. The first update that actually does them good as a company and they reverse it. They're off to a great start in the year now...
  7. It's impressive that he's actually going to continue with this project. I still don't feel that it'll do him much good; Jagex has already decided and a change in their new policy would do them more harm than good. I concur. It's not fair to the people trying to do thing constructive if all you see are "SAVE SS" in your chat window. :(
  8. Careful now; that's libel. They never said they were considering IRC... Believe me, if they add group chat, it will be IRC. They may give it a cleaner front end to make it more user friendly, but the backend will be IRC without a doubt. Why in God's name would they go to the incredible expense of re-inventing the wheel? EDIT: Unless you think they're going to try to give clans a five line chat box? I don't believe you. I won't believe you. IRC is not the one-stop source for mass chat in real-time. Don't you know there's other mass conversation clients out there, such as AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, etc, etc... Even so, if they "reinvented the wheel" that would be perfectly fine. They have the resources, the manpower and time to do something like that. I'd prefer it if they built a chat client that was (in their mind) safe, instead of using some shaky source from Internet Relay Chat. I couldn't care less if it is five lines, the chat feature ingame isn't based off of IRC. I'm sure they'd modify that to whatever specifications they'd ever need in a group chat system.
  9. You're arguing semantics. You're missing the obvious off of the rants forums: EDIT: Careful now; that's libel. They never said they were considering IRC...
  10. But I do know what I'm talking about. How is SwiftSwitch a browser? Even in the FAQ for it, it uses this statement: (1) Decided to bold the parts of that statement that you may or may not have noticed. It is similar to one, but that doesn't mean it IS one. For instance, an optical mouse is similar to a touchpad in the sense that they are both pointer devices on a computer, but that doesn't make an optical mouse a touchpad, or vice versa. Furthermore, simply stating that a need that was not provided by Jagex does not give anyone, individual or company besides Jagex themselves, to step in and fill that need. If Jagex wanted you to have an IRC client embedded in their client, then they'd have provided it. They haven't? Guess they must not trust IRC security... (1) - Referenced to the FAQ of this client Probably is. Show me this "screwed up interface" and we can debate it at later date. I have not noticed any such thing.
  11. What I'm reading here is a lot of nonsense how it's not easier to get into server 2 or to do certain things. Well, let me tell you: I call every five seconds faster than pressing F5. Especially when you really can't press F5; you have to wait on that empty 20 users to appear in server 2 with the arrow refresh trick. If you blink or sneeze and accidentally press that button, it'll be gone for a half hour. Even then it'll take you another half hour to get in. On top of this, people seem to fail to realise that Jagex has had the "no third party" rule in effect for quite some time. Why is this just now coming to everyone as a shock? You can debate with me that it was legal and all this stuff, even show me the screenshots of the maker asking Customer Support. I've seen that, and even then didn't believe that it could be legal; after all it was still third party. You can even argue on the premise that all it did (or all that you used it for) was the switch feature. It is still third party. You can even dare to argue that you used it just for the IRC. If you wanted to, you could just download mIRC separately (in fact I've recommended that to a number of people in my IRC channel), and you would be within legality. But if you didn't, it would still be a third party client with a feature that was obviously not intended to be within the original RuneScape client. You can even debate with me that it did not give you an advantage. Oh sure, you may not call having guides, calculators and an IRC client open in the exact same window an advantage...but I sure do. Right now, what matters is what the rules say right now. Arguing semantics about the past is both pointless and a waste of time. Jagex's policies are subject to change (without notice), so you can either live with it or stop playing quietly. (By quietly I mean people that say "Jagex is going to lose money over this!"; say that and I'd buy 6 months of membership to make up for your loss.)
  12. What the hell good is complaining going to do for you? For anyone? Not a doggone thing, I'll tell you what. A lot of people wanted to challenge the legality of this client through various queries sent by Jagex. Let me tell you a little tip: Nothing, I repeat: NOTHING is in stone unless it is in the rules. Messages from a moderator have been proven to be erroneous in nature before this ever occurred. The only thing that protesting will get you is a ban. And I for one am glad about it; I need the server space. If you want to continue to play RS, then do so with separate RS and mIRC clients. If you don't, leave and don't let the door hit you on the way out. If you think that it was legal before this update, let me tell you this: This client gives you an advantage by allowing access to a fansite's cache of knowledge. This client allows speedier access to skill calculators. This client allows slightly faster access to worlds, although I am told that it is quicker to just use the RS client for worldhopping. ------ For those that say this client is no different than IE, let me ask you this: If you logged into someone else's internet chat session, are you that person? Well, that's something that this client does. It uses a DLL from IE (which could get them in a LOT of hot water with Microsoft), but that does not make them IE. It's also rather easy to detect what browser/software version you're using. If you know PHP, then the superglobal $_SESSION can be used to detect what browser you're using. So don't try to argue that it's not detectable.
  13. I've personally been very active in the High Level suggestions sticky, and I don't feel that a high level update will come out anytime in the next month. I just can't foresee that. But if it DOES happen, that's a big bonus.
  14. Farming was at first very unpopular because it wasn't possible to grind it, like you would any of the other skills. But nowadays people are starting to show some patience.
  15. A lot of people are saying how cool it would be IF white dragonhide came out. Well it is out already, just in the form of 3rd Age Ranger armour. Only takes 65 range and defense to wear, I believe. I also doubt highly the appearance of a white dragon. Just because the armour appeared which was made out of those hides doesn't necessarily promise the appearance of that particular dragon.
  16. What would break RS? The day that the peak number of players hit 300,000. Then, I'll be hitting the road.
  17. Okay, since no one wants it, I'll take Sir Prysin's entire room. Including his armour. Gotta have that chess set in my parlour. :P
  18. Best: Mining. Don't ask why; it was something I really enjoyed back in the day. Worst: Selling a Santa to the General Store.
  19. I highly doubt that; a lot of people don't know Latin. Not just on this thread, mind you.
  20. There's plenty of Latin dotted around RuneScape and the English dialect. Where do you think we got "portal" from? The Latin word "portas", translated as "gate". ;) Glad you're observant.
  21. It doesn't matter how you felt. That kid has feelings too. You could have told him your stats and then asked him in a kind manner to "not see through your windows". Either way, that is creepy. Instinct would've told me to slam the door too, then my humanity would act up and apologize to the kid.
  22. So what's better, showing off that you have a 99 (or done all quests), or that you can last two hours in the fight pits? Personally, I'd have to say the Achievement capes are what it's all about for me. It's effectively just a cheaper version of the Obsidian cape, and comes with a handy bonus. (I don't know why you'd want to raise your Slayer to 100/99 though...) These capes share some similar ground on the fact that they both take time, resources and patience to acquire. Yet it takes substantially longer to get a 99 in any skill at all than it does to beat TzTok-Jad. Range pures with 43 prayer can get a Fire Cape nowadays. It's just not that hard anymore to get one if you know what you're doing and have the bare minimum. However, with the Achievement cape, you've shown that you not only did the bare minimum, you went above and beyond that. I'd hold more respect for someone that had a 99 Slayer cape than someone that had a Fire Cape. Which cape would I take? All depends on what I'm doing. If I'm fighting something, then maybe I'd take the Fire Cape, if I didn't have Strength at that time. If I was PKing or just fooling around, of course I'm going to take the Accomplishment cape out, simply because not ONLY will it add a boost to my defense, but it will add a level to my magic! More accurate Barrage == More Kills. So what if you lose that cape...you can just buy another for cheap. That's my view on it.
  23. Black mask + High grade armour vs. Bronze Dragons = Easy task. Black mask + Prayer potions + Super set vs. Iron/Steel = Easy task.
  24. Personally I could care less as to what happens with whip prices. It is just a whip. Arguably the best weapon in the game, but I've seen a dagger pull off double 37s. Argue with THAT. In retrospect, I made a promise to myself (and friends/community home) that I'd sell whips at 1M each when I hit 85 slayer, regardless of the economy. I'll hold to that. Doesn't matter what may happen when whips fall really low; all this means is that everyone will have one. This is a good thing since so many more people are chugging for 85 slayer/combat related goals and could use a decent weapon. (It ain't half bad for tackling the KBD, either.)
