  1. Well, you need to get all your drivers. That includes graphics and audio. Next, you need to run Automatic Updates (I'm assuming this is a windows installation). Download all the critical updates. You can choose software and hardware ones later, but you need the critical ones. Especially the service packs. After you update it, you need a firewall, antivirus, and antispyware. I would go with Comodo, Avira, and MalwareBytes Antimalware, respectively. Then, get Mozilla Firefox. That will have your computer set for the rest of my post.. I could rattle off a whole bunch of other programs that I find essential...Then again, I do web development, VB, and C++ as well, and experiment in graphics design, so if you don't do any of that, half my programs won't fit for you.. What are you going to do with your computer? Play games? Schoolwork? Do you do any kind of development, like web design, or programming? If you can say something about what you like to do on the computer, I can help you find a program to match that interest, most likely one that I or someone I know uses.
  2. Alright, you may want to put that code in hide tags (...lol) - the [hide][/hide] ones, so it doesn't stretch out this forum's page. But, there's one major problem I saw with the code - it only allows for one thing to be hidden. It's not you, it's probably something Errdoth did, maybe thinking you only wanted one hide box..Unless I'm interpreting the code wrong, but that seems to be the problem. As far as the color problem, I would need a copy of the css files too. Without those, I can't help with the color problem. If you need the text to change color, you would have to add to the css at the top of the page. The code would be: html{ color: red; } I don't know if I can help, since I haven't used GoDaddy, and I don't know how they get the files for the html. I could try to work on it tomorrow for you if you want. Are you using a free version? If so, you're probably screwed. Free hosting usually sucks, and they don't allow you full control of how your site looks. If you want a better choice, pay for a host. You can get them for like $5 USD per month. Just ask visitors for donations or something to keep the site alive. $5 isn't a lot, just a bit less than a RS membership. If you could tell me if they allow you to upload your own files, that would be great, because I can work with that. If you can't use CSS, or link to external sheets, then we have a problem. I would advise you wait for Errdoth to roll on by again. Maybe send him a PM? In the meantime, go to W3Schools. It's a great website for beginners to web design, and even experienced people will go and looking at their references.
  3. Send me the code you are trying to use. All of it. I'll try it out here and see if I can find out what's wrong.
  4. I don't know if I'm remembering right, but my teacher (who teaches web design) says he hates go daddy. Says the service sucks, but I can verify tomorrow. I have the new link - Working one (also a zip file). I had to add a class declaration to the link. If you send me the code for your guide page, I can add the functions to it and comment it out for you. Just post it in a hide tag, or upload it in a zip file to mediafire.com. I can help explain some parts of the code if you send the files to me. I can have it back either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon, since I have some projects to finish up here. I've been meaning to practice my HTML, and I have quite a bit of free time this weekend. If you want to make the content, I would do the coders part. I'm not a complete novice at it, but I'm nowhere near an expert. I have a good hold on html and CSS though, and I can understand a lot of JS too.
  5. http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm - Winrar, it's what I use. You can try 7-zip.. I have a question though - why are your links not blue? Default link color is blue, and the show/hide thing is a link..
  6. Alright, I have a download for you that has what you need. I'm still trying to figure out the div tags to get the show/hide thing to work though. I think you may have to change it manually, but since you use the same call every time, it shouldn't be that hard. Link to Download. Just unzip it and go, it should be rather self-explanatory. I'm working on something else too, so I may edit this or make a new post.
  7. Yeah, as the title says, I'm looking for someone with a decent knowledge of C++ or VB (I use VB 2008 Express, and VB.NET at school) to help me with a small project of mine. Preferably, someone good with working the registry (as I believe some changes may need to be made in there). Now, that my seem pretty bad, but my intents are completely innocent. What I'm looking for is help with an idea I've had for awhile. It's a background rotator. What I want is that after a certain time interval, the background will change from one picture to another. The pictures will be in one folder. It's similar to the windows screensaver, where you set an interval and the location of the folder, and it cycles through them, preferrably randomly. It's similar to the webshots program, but that seems to mess with my computer, so I don't like to use it. Also, I was hoping to include support for multiple file types (jpeg, bmp, png), which I don't know how easy it would be to implement. I have an idea on how this might work, but I would like an experienced coder's advice. If anyone is interested, post here or PM me. Also, please don't tell me to "google it" because I did, and I didn't like the few results I found. And, I'm not interested in someone just handing me code and telling me to compile it. That's not the point. I'm trying to learn C++ and get some real-world practice with VB, but I need some guidance on both.
  8. I know what sleep does. But I'm trying to say that Hibernate would be better for you, because it draws almost no power (even a completely shutdown computer draws some power, and hibernate is almost the same as a complete shutdown). I'd be willing to end it with a "to each, his own" here though, and I will. Nice PSU btw, was thinking about getting something around that for my build when I get the money for it. But were you yelling at me in your post? The part? If so, pm me, because I need to inquire about this.
  9. Alright, I figured it out. There are a few changes you need, one small one to the HTML document. You do need a css page though. Open up Notepad (or Notepad++, or HTML-Kit, both of which are great for dev), and save a document as "style.css" without the quotes. Save it in the same folder as your web page. If you have one for this page, add the code to it. [hide=HTML Edit] Your title here You only need to add the part to it, I just included the other parts so you knew where to put it.[/hide] [hide=CSS] body{ background-color: red; } a{ color: rgb(0,0,255); } [/hide] That code will make your background red, and all your links blue. If you don't want all the links to be blue on that page, then I can add a work-around, but I just put up a quick example. You can edit the link color to your choosing, I set it to pure blue.
  10. Ahh, alrighty. It just happened that you couldn't do it after I stopped going to FG, which is about when we had the forum move. Didn't even think of that (actually forgot we moved from 2 to 3). Thanks for clearing that up.
  11. I think they disabled that feature after some users *cough*me*cough* abused it in Forum Games, and other places.
  12. No, that book should be banned. I hated reading it. And to show my hate, after reading it, I got a few copies, and burned them with an Axe can flamethrower. I still don't see why Huckleberry Finn is banned. It's a historical book really. Then again, so is To Kill A Mockingbird, which is also banned in some places. I wonder how many sales of these books this topic has caused so far...
  13. You can't afford the power bill, but you set it to sleep? Now, forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't sleep mode draw more power than Hibernate (which I was told is equated to turning off the computer)? Unless I've been told wrong all this time - Power On > Sleep\Stand-by > Hibernate in terms of power consumption. And I was just trying to say what a hard reboot was. I didn't mean that Hibernation is bad. All of the computers I use have been set to hibernate after a certain amount of time. I also have a hibernate shortcut on my desktop (I can post the instructions for it if anyone wants them). Yes, you should do a restart every now and then. I try to do a restart at least once a week. Usually I do it once every 2-3 days. But, you don't have to do a hard reboot, or a forced reboot. See, the problem with hibernate is that your computer keeps everything in RAM that was there before. Eventually, all these temp files get written there, and they stay, which slows down your computer a lot. By doing a hard reboot, you're clearing out this memory, allowing your computer to read and write to RAM and other parts faster. Rebooting should be a weekly thing, if not more. I also defrag my computer once a month or more as well, to help make reading and writing just that much faster. I'm sorry if I posted wrong information, I don't mean to. I'm just trying to help with what knowledge I have, or what I can find in the 5 minutes of research I may do to refresh my memory. Note that I don't post on every thread, because I don't want to help in areas I have no clue about. I think I have this info pretty much down, else I've been arguing with my dad for no reason all this time.
  14. Sounds like Lord of the Flies (another banned book here) to me, except it was a whole group of kids, not just 3.
  15. SWEET! Looks really good to me. Hope they can deliver on their promises. I hope to have enough money for my new system around the time that it comes out, so I'm really banking on what they do with Windows 7. I really don't want Vista, and it's not because it's a resource hog or anything, I just prefer XP. And I work with both daily, so my opinions have a decent root behind them. From the article, it seems like Microsoft has learned from some past mistakes, and is finally playing on the same field as Mac as far as the GUI and ease of use. I hope that part about switching from Vista to Windows 7 being seamless is true. That would make my life as a programmer so much easier, knowing I will not have to change really anything when the new OS comes out.
  16. To each his own. I don't think its racist at all. As long as you didn't actually mention something racist relating to that, than you are fine. We all have our preferences. Just because I don't like thrash metal doesn't mean I think Slayer are horrible people. (Hope I got that genre right). Same thing with your homophobe example. Everyone will have their preferences. Did you ask them if they prefer all races equally? Because chances are they have a race or group they don't like either.
  17. My 9th grade English teacher only chose from books that were banned to let us read as group books. Actually, most of my teachers have done this lol. I think it's wrong to ban books, especially for stupid reasons. I'll agree that "How to smoke crack in 3 easy steps" should be banned, but Huckleberry Finn shouldn't be banned. That's a great book, and a great movie. Animal Farm (actually, all George Orwell books I've read) are probably banned so the government can protect itself. So much in 1984 is relevant to today's issues, it's not even funny. *Note to all: go read that book, it's a brilliant piece of literature. It's not like someone is going to stop me from reading the books, but still, there are some entries on the banned books list that make no sense at all.
  18. Last resort? You mean to tell me holding the power button, then rebooting, and performing a disk check is a last resort? ...Just walk away urbest...just walk away... #-o Isn't hard restart another way of saying to wipe out the Hard Drive and start all over again? It sounds like it is. Well, if not, i have tried it alot of times, this problem is like a year old, but my mom just recently told me. No, a hard restart is as I explained....Uhh...Here's a Wiki article on it, so I don't have to try to re-explain it (since I have to go to bed): link. You could just uninstall and reinstall the graphics and sound drivers. That's not hard to do, and there's no formatting or anything involved.
  19. Last resort? You mean to tell me holding the power button, then rebooting, and performing a disk check is a last resort? ...Just walk away urbest...just walk away...
  20. Listening to, and also attempting to play (on Frets on Fire), Eruption by Van Halen. Song is epic, but friggin hard to play.
  21. I'll admit, the twisted logic he pulls at the end was pure genius. I keep seeing previews for the new episode, and I get less and less interested though.
  22. Paintballs, yes. They hurt like crazy when frozen, but can cause problems with the gun. For some people, it's quite normal. As for the alarm clock, I suppose it could be considered relatively normal. If you were told no more alarm clock smashing, I suppose that would be one way to shut it up. I don't really find weird things in the fridge. Usually we eat the food before it has a chance to go undiscovered (when you have such limited funds as we do, you tend not to waste things). I have found a month old blizzard before, but it got pushed to the back of the freezer and we kept adding stuff to that part, so it didn't get seen. I have left the remote and the phone in the fridge, but only for about 5 minutes at max, until I had to use it.
  23. So, it's not a vacation to Cancun. Big deal. Why do they need basketball, cable tv, or anything really? We should give them a toilet, a concrete box with a steel door, 2 meals (breakfast and dinner), and a bit of water. They don't need any fun stuff, it's prison, not summer camp. And your article is for lethal injection and such. Now, go to my choice, which is the second one down (the box of 1000). That works out to 0.19899 per round, or 20 cents. Now, if we have to do 2 rounds to make sure they're gone, that's 40 cents per prisoner. Include backhoe rental for a day or two a week (if the family can't afford a burial), and we have a solution. And so what if I'm a twisted person? As long as I don't go snapping babies in half, then there's no problem is there?
  24. Have you tried every type of beer there is? I highly doubt so, so you can't say that. I can't legally drink, but even I have a beer that I find enjoyable, and I only get to try a few sips here and there. Real men drink hard liquor anyways (whiskey anybody?)
