You need crimsons for talon beast charms anyway so I'd say go with crims.

Don't hunt for that many talons.It'll be frustrating and in the same time you could've gotten a lot more crims.

I believe those count aswell.The way I did that particulart part of the diary was to get a wily cat then go to West Ardougne, in the middle.There are a lot of rats there and the wily hellcat has missed about 2 rats in ~500 so far(caught some hellrats after the diary part was done).
