Not again.. In Europe this time. School massacre+Youtube vid
BlueLancer replied to BlueLancer's topic in Off-Topic
I searched a lot even on native Finnish sites, but I never found an explanation as to what led to his massive anger. All I found was him saying he has 'suffered', but I don't know if that's physical abuse, neglection, witnessing something way too horrible etc. Now that he's dead there's no way to find out though, unless someone comes forward to explain. -
Record the phone calls, when he calls you back, play the tape and say that's what his parents are hearing when they come home.. If he doesn't stop calling you O:)

Moving this 8-)

Even though we all respect his memory, *please* don't bump up an old post just to say "sniff".

Life isn't quite that black and white.. Someone could like Lord of the Rings and still hate midgets with a passion. A movie or book doesn't define you as a person... It's just what you watch/read/listen to in your spare time. -
Sorry Daan, but you must understand I agree with the spam report for this post...

I have a scaringly similar world view compared to his (and I have nearly the same first name.. *gasp*), but I'd never go to these lengths to show it to other people... His selection of targets was screwed up big time. Instead of picking off filthy oil company bosses who get away with cleansing (killing) whole villages in poor countries to build a pipeline, or mafia criminals that get away with dozens of muders.. He picks school students. Reading his posts, he does hate everyone who is a part of the 'system', but I despise him for taking on people who are too young to even know what the 'system' is :? He shouldn't expect must hospitality from other inmates while spending time in jail... He claims one of his main objectives is "justice". By selecting those targets he just proved himself wrong. -
Native speaker of Swedish/Finnish plus Serbian from my father's side... English as a 3rd language, Russian as 4th... :) Also capable of medium-level japanese speaking and reading, but still trying to learn... I'm looking towards finalizing my language set by learning Chinese and Arabic as well, but that will be a monster task since I don't just want to learn a language.. If I study it, I want to speak it fluently so I can't be distinguished from a native even over a phone.. I figure Chinese will be the hardest to learn, and I probably wont even bother trying to learn the 10,000+ different signs, just fluent speaking and some basic reading skills... A great motivation is the massive benefit of knowing the language: China will in a decade or two surpass the US militarily and economically... And it doesn't hurt that out of the world's 6.5 billion people, 1.5 billion speak mandarin chinese as their mother tongue.

This just happened a few hours ago: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21669167/ It's not just an american phenomenon, but it seems like these kids do it for attention and even post their intentions before carrying out their deed  The guy still has his YouTube account open, the username is 'Sturmgeist89'... It's kind of scary to read the thoughts of a mass murderer, and yet he's only 18 years old...

Yeah, quite aware of tea's health benefits (especially Green tea), just can't be bothered to buy it since it needs to be heated and you need other accessories to make it drinkable... But that's just an excuse  I also read multiple articles, especially studies conducted in Japan/other asian countries, that green tea extends your lifespan if consumed regularly. It can also massively reduce the risk of other diseases. Heck, I don't even care what a study says, if a japanese guy lives up to 116 years and says he did so by eating healthy and drinking green tea, I'm taking his word for it...

Myself, I don't read particularly many books, maybe 2 to 5 a year if I can be bothered. It's a good change from audiovisual media, you can use your mind to intepret events and places in a book (fictional or not). However, nearly every very intelligent person I met (ranging from anywhere between 20 and 60 years) were avid readers of books. No, they didn't spend a whole lot of time watching 24 or Big Brother on TV. No, they didn't listen to country, heavy metal or pop music all day. They *read*. And guess what, truly intelligent people don't have the need to bring up their own intelligence, or the other person's intelligence in a real discussion! (Or you can do it for comedy purposes in a smart fashion like Maddox, but not many people can do that) By reading books, seeing how people can live in different cultures and ways, understanding how problems can have complex roots and complex answers, you can become a truly wise/tolerant person, increase your vocabulary, make your brain work more effectively as it understands there are many ways to fix something... Because frankly, most of the real pseudo-intellectuals I know that get drunk every second day, spend their free time watching reality TV and talking bad about their neighbours, also express irrational hate against some people/groups, always emphasize their own 'smartness', and don't even try to understand other points of view/alternative solutions... They're the real peanut brains.

Ron Paul raises over 3 million dollars in 24 hours
BlueLancer replied to dwarfdude3's topic in Off-Topic
There's not really anywhere else he can post it... a "news" isn't automatically a piece of plagued filth, it tells the world what happened. Yes, believe it or not, news aren't made up so you can read random stuff. They report unusual events that have recently happened. Anyways, I find it highly improbable for Paul to be elected as president  But if his supporters are devoted... Who knows. Money is really the only obstacle between any average person vs the presidency. You don't get elected by your merits, you get elected by how, when, where you market yourself. -
Absolutely not.. When you hear the cheesy "We care about our customers", or the healthcare company's "We care about your wellbeing", what they really mean is "We care about your wallet". Really, if you missed 3 payments on your healthcare plan because you are poor and needed to feed your children, and you suddenly get a heart attack, would their clinic accept you out of good will to save a human life? They don't give a rat's ... about human life, a "company" is just a bunch of people looking to maximize profits with the least possible effort. Like said above, a company isn't a collective entity really

Why would I want 'all the money in the world', thus crippling the whole world economy, leaving everyone without a job and I couldn't spend it before everyone went out of business? But yeah.. I'd easily take even like 100mil over true "love". "Love" is a chemically altered state of mind. Yeah I experienced it, but I'd much rather have kids and secure their lives financially, than struggle and fight with a wife that eventually turns against you and starts arguing. I seriously doubt there even is "true love". My grandfather has been married for 30 years and and outsider could think it's a perfect marriage of love... But really, my grandmother told me how he gets angry about small things, goes into rage and breaks stuff, how they barely care about each other most of the time etc... Just look at the pitiful divorce statistics in the USA: http://www.divorcemag.com/statistics/statsUS.shtml On average people stay married for less than 5 years before finding someone else to live with, then possibly re-divorce (!!!). Why commit yourself to "till death do us apart" when humans aren't obviously physically meant to live with only 1 partner. Just about nobody in real life stays married to their husband/wife until death.

What do you think of this review on IGN?
BlueLancer replied to SportsGuy's topic in General Discussion
Your post title+adding the link had to be modified so it can constitute as any kind of discussion. In the future try explaining 'why' you agree with something, and try to promt others for their opinion.. That's why it's called the 'general discussions' forum 8-) -
It's quite clear the poll will be biased, just about impossible to get real results unless you just asked people in-game which one they use (instead of separately asking for opinions on both respective forums..). Moving to questionnaires though. :)

Will my skill levels transfer to mechscape?
BlueLancer replied to nickeley102's topic in General Discussion
Seeing as it will be a sci-fi themed game, it's a near certainty that everyone will have to create a new account to play it. Why would a game set into space travel & combat have fletching, woodcutting, ranged  But as this is just pure speculation there's nothing constructive to discuss.. -
Paul/Andrew Gower already adressed this issue back in 2002-2003, the reason is quite simple: The screen lag would be massive with up to 100 people on your screen all moving at different speeds. Especially when done in Java programming language. The runescape client is 100% dependant on your CPU power and does not utilize a graphics card at all. This might work in a game like WoW, but remember that's a game that comes with 5 CD's and totals over 4gb in file size, is coded in C++ and utilizes GPU (graphics processing units) and CPU (central processing unit). RuneScape is a java applet you can access from a web browser.

He's a long time member of tip.it who also had moderator duties+ if I remember correctly, used to do graphics/signature arts on the forums :) Nothing has really changed here since you left... A few people are gone, topics are kind of running dry, but hey, it's fun to check this place once in a while 8-)

While I couldn't agree more about the fact congressmen/representatives salaries are way out of proportion in contrast to what they actually do, there's 1 problem: Politicians salaries in democracies are high for the sole reason that they become harder to bribe. Sociological fact is that the less you pay, the more prone to corruption officials become (just see the state of russian police, they basically live off corruption due to earning like $200 a month) Sure criminals can persuade a group of congressmen to do something against their will for say, 10x their yearly salary, but there are few political advances worth so much money. You don't even get a guarantee they'll fulfill their promises. By paying politicians $10,000/$20,000+ a month you discourage a lot of bribery and corruption from happening in the country's legislative chambers. Why take $100k in bribes and risk ruining your entire life and career, when you can just earn that legally in 5 months and say "no thanks"

Just look at Michael Jackson, just proves my point further... Hardly a case of "innocent until proven guilty" is it? The court ruled he had nothing to do with abusing children, and even found many of the kids lying by pressure of their parents in hopes of big money by winning the case. Even though Michael Jackson did nothing wrong and is innocent, people still make jokes of him abusing children even on popular shows like Conan O'Brien, because his reputation is already gone beyond any imaginable restoration. People would still react negatively to him in public, even though the man did nothing wrong. He may be able to live with himself, but in Japan, a person who's had his honor so badly damaged in public would commit suicide. Heck, look at the last Japanese minister of finance... The man committed suicide at age 61 because he was accused of taking bribes. Can you even imagine an european/american/african politician of briefly feeling guilty for doing that? They'd just have some lame response like "Come on, it's human nature" or "can you really cast the first rock"
-
Weird, I was going to mention the honor-based cultures in asia as well. In most Asian countries (especially east-asian), if your reputation is gone, you are *nothing*. You must earn your honor back by proving your innocence, thus shaming the person who falsely accused you. Yakuza, Triad and other dubious groups in asia have long exploited these cultural features, by for example stalking rich businessmen and recording them doing something embarrassing or inappropriate (such as a businessman with a family and children visiting a prostitute, or gambling illegally) then succesfully extorting them out of tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for "silence". Because unlike in western cultures where in a twisted sense it's "ok" to be a 'b**ch' or 'greedy' or 'selling out', it's not the worldwide view. In a lot of countries you have to prove your innocence yourself as well.

Aa didn't realize you meant in Australia  You're right, withdrawing troops in "coalition" countries is largely a matter of domestic politics instead of 'betraying' the nation they are supposed to help. Most countries contribution is quite insignificant anyways, not to belittle it, but some sent like 10 engineers or 100 soldiers as a symbol, not as a real means to combat insurgents etc. Demanding australian withdrawal could win you extra votes.

What we goin to do tonight, Brain? Narf! Haha that cartoon is priceless.. Anyways, on topic: Your election promises are pretty general, and not bad at all... But here are a few that would cause political and financial problems: 1. Not wearing seatbelts/helmets are punishable by law, because hurting yourself hurts the state. If you don't have any concern for your own health, the state can end up paying for some of your healthcare bill, you stay out of work due to injuries etc.. Or in the worst case, if you die.. It's not your life the government cares about, it's the fact when an average american dies, they just lost a potential $100,000-$400,000 in tax revenue over the rest of your lifespan. They NEED you to stay alive, so they can keep being in business. -- 2. The state doesn't control the supply of marijuana, if it becomes decriminalized, it'd still mean dealers reap huge profits from a product which can't be even taxed. If it becomes taxed, dealers will sell it for a lower price on black markets without paying the tax, benefiting both the buyer and dealer. If the state can't enforce the taxation of a substance, thus earn revenue from it's distribution, they will criminalize it. They couldn't care less about your health, it's the 20-30% tax cut they want that they can't get. -- 3. Withdrawing 150,000+ troops, heavy artillery, helicopters, tanks, supplies, will take a very long time. It's not an overnight process. Iraq is theoretically in a civil war right now, withdrawing from the responsibility (USA created the civil war by assaulting the country in the first place) has HUGE political repercussions. The american army can't leave Iraq before it becomes a normal stabilized country without warring factions who have their own armed forces and each levy their own taxes in their local bases of support. American generals have even admitted it's possible the model of democracy wont even work in Iraq, and they might have to resort to other government models similar to Saddam's (dictatorship), which at least kept the country stable (though terrorized minorities under Saddam Hussein) Attacking a country, securing oil flow to domestic corporations, then leaving the country in chaos isn't something the rest of the countries will look through their fingers.

Or you could save your health and not play for periods of time that require you to consume oral drugs  You can game without using drinks or substances for fairly over 16 hours without feeling naturally sleepy, soon after that you should sleep anyways. There's barely anything to be gained from staying up for long periods of time just to get "levels". (Unless you do it as a business to get yourself food on the table, like managing your taxes on Second Life to convert it to real money, etc..)
