It's supposed to do that. You stay in combat 1 minute after dcing (or closing the window) and if you survive that you are logged out safely; if not you get a gravestone however it can not be blessed.

If you intend to complete the varrock diary at some point you would have been better off getting a cat training medal on normal rats and then doing ratcatchers. You rarely fail when using it.

Dragon bolt special doesn't work on Jad (or the guy in a vidio using them I saw was just every unlucky), and the healing from onyx won't do you much good because he hits so high anyway.
