I think staves increase the damage output of your spells? Not entirely sure though. Maybe. My Damage on Autocast Info doesn't change (342 if I have Ice Barrage set on auto-cast) even if I'm not wearing any weapon :P The Equipment Bonuses screen isn't very useful right now. It should display a lot more info. I get a 430 critical hit when using my virtus wand, 637 wearing my chaotic staff. Abilities deal the same damage whether if you're using a wand or a staff it seems. Edit: this is so weird. I get a 1720 critical hit when using Asphyxiate with a virtus wand + FKS and 1680 when using a chaotic staff? o.O I hit less with a staff. Edit II: wow, Torment makes a TINY difference. I hit 342 max without an overload and Torment and 356 with only Torment on? Dat 0,4% difference.

Melee, Ranging, and Two Slight Diversions
I agree, this is a great guide. I used this guide when I was training for 99 Ranged.

Is there any point in using a staff instead of a wand + offhand? I'm using a virtus wand + FKS right now and I get the same hit bonus as I would get with my chaotic staff, and on top of that I get a massive defence and LP boost and defensive abilities :/

Magic is kind of overpowered in PvP. Rangers using dual-wield are extremely easy to kill, rangers with a shield are quite difficult and meleers are a joke. Lol not that I mind :P I often don't even have to eat my rocktails in a range vs mage fight. And melee never hits through my virtus, lol. By the way, familiars take very long to respond... when I'm in a fight with two people and I want my steel titan to switch targets it takes forever to switch. Very annoying.

No Good fight mages with a CSB then? o.O CSB is useless because you don't need bloods/deaths anymore. You still have to craft a lot of elemental runes if you have a CCS though. Speaking about Magic, how does it fare in Dungeoneering compared to Melee and Ranged?

Now take that number and cut it in half to account for people just standing around. Now maybe we have an accurate number of people testing beta. If I could give you my beta access I would. Funny looking at my friendslist and all the ones who tested beta on day one compared to now. I used to have about 10 or so friends who got in beta. I haven't seen one test it since Wednesday. I'm sorry, but this is really annoying me. They're denying access to a lot of people who want to test the content, but they're allowing access to people who gamble on a beta server where all your items will just be deleted at the end? What the hell is going on in Jagex's mind? If you look at my previous posts they are dealing with it the next update. And I understand. Trying to find someone to actually do something with in beta without already knowing them is annoying when half of them are begging for partyhats the other half are gambling. And if it means anything. Those people wanted to test combat too. They did, until they got bored, and started to gamble. I will be honest, I want to run around and try to make fake billions too. Trust me, it gets boring REALLY fast when you are gaining nothing. There is a reason people get paid to do this. I hope they will deny access to those that gamble on the beta servers and instead, invite more players in to test their content.

Post all RS Screenshots, Videos, and Sounds here!
They should just kick those people out of the beta and invite more players who actually want to test the beta... <_<

1625 out of the 50,000 people + everyone who was allowed in automatically... and here I am, wondering why I can't test the beta and provide some constructive feedback on Magic.

Don't be fool by the numbers, you don't always hit 300-400%, or hit at all. Abilities to me feel like an extension of special attacks. Most people relied on them before, the only difference I see now is you have more that you can use more of them more often. Normal attacks do plenty of damage, most of the lower abilities are just a bonus. It's usually the ultimates that are doing the big hits. there is no balance at all. its an absolute mess and quadruplely so in PvE. The only attacks that do any appreciable damage are ones that damage a % of the targets max LP but anything worth a damn has a cap on how much damage it can take, so you just spam unload and frenzy as they hit the cap multiple times. All the ideas put in seem to be working in opposition to each other, like whats the point of better armour giving better lp boosts if the only real damage is coming from these stupid % based attacks, which causes you to take more damage in absolute terms and so making you need more food to heal? The same is true with weapons, since all the damage is coming from the % attacks and abilities are always the same speed, weapon speed and power are irrelevant so the only weapon stat that matters is hit rating. I hope they werent actually planning to release it this year, as if this gets released even remotely resembling this mess then I really do see myself leaving and never coming back. Oh dear... that doesn't sound good at all. Is there a balance between 1h weapons and 2h weapons? Everyone seems to be dual wielding. Are bows like the zaryte bow any good? The chaotic maul? Staves? I would say there is a bit of an exaggeration on how messy everything is. I am not saying this is anywhere near right, but it's not THAT bad. Most of the time, the people who complain are the ones who just spam and don't put any thought into what abilities they use. Here is my thoughts + experience with duel wielding and 2 hand weapons. Duel wielding has the abilities to rip through someone, and cause a lot of damage fast (typically beating out someone using a 2h weapon but not fairing well with someone tanking with a shield). 2h weapons seems to do well against people using shields. I love the zaryte bow. I usually kill anyone I am fighting unless they are divine tanking (melee, mage, or range). I do this by binding them, then i use an ability that hits higher while they are stunned. I hit a few more abilities and then about the time they start running at me, I hit them with the range ability that does more damage while they are running. Finally I finish with a range ultimate, or if I am low on health I rejuvenate. Now if the person actually knows how to use abilities, they just counter my bind with the freedom ability and kill me. That's kind of what i mean about the people complaining. I killed some guy 3 times in a row while using range (he was melee), because i kept binding him. He then sat there complaining about how this is garbage. If he actually spent anytime putting in thought on what to use, he would have used freedom and ripped me to shreds anyway. Edit: I would also like to add something for anyone afraid of all the damage they might take. There are defensive abilities to counter the damage as well. Anticipation reduces all damage taken by 10% for 10 seconds. Revenge causes any attacks you received to increase your damage by 10% stacking up to 100% for 10 seconds. Immortality reduces damage you receive by 25% for 30 seconds, and if you die you return to life. Debilitate reduces damage enemies deal by 50% for 10 seconds. Resonance makes attacks within the next 6 seconds heal you instead of harm you. Reflect sends 50% of damage back at an attacker for 10 seconds. Freedom as I mentioned before frees you of snare, gains immunity to them for 6 seconds and clears damage over time effects. Rejuvenate uses up your bar to fill your health and drained stats over time. Thanks for the answers! Really appreciate it :)

I would say no, but it's better than before. And from looking at the beta forums, they are actively looking at everything we have to say and are addressing it. This is early beta and we have months for things to be adjusted. What class is the weakest right now? And is Magic effective on Nex now? Given that Nex has no weakness, I suppose it could work effectively. That's pretty cool then if true :P So is there an actual rotation of some kind? Or is it just random button spamming?

Considering I can't test the beta (stupid Jagex), I have to ask this: is DPS really balanced now between the three combat classes?

Does the Magic Focus scroll still give the same boost as an extreme potion? Is Magic more effective against bosses now?

The Crucible 19-06-12
The more I play it, the more I hate it. Every high level is using gano armor, farcasting with poly or SoA. Range sucks too much to do any serious damage, melee can't counter the farcasting and Magic sucks against gano armor. So much fun! Right now this game has the worst combat balance I have ever seen on a game so I'm happy it's being reworked... sucks it won't be out until late august or so.

Just what I expected. Meleers lose to mages, rangers are too weak to beat a good mage so the whole area is just going to be infested by ganodermic mages. Fun! They can't really farcast you with SoA effectively, can they? True. But with SoA it's generally not worth it to farcast. The amount of DPS you deal is so high that the opponent spends most of his time eating, and not attacking. And any damage you do take as the mage, you just heal yourself back to full LP with Soul Split.

getting farcasted? its called dhide and range or mage him back. not hard Too bad dragonhide (or any other hide or range armor) offers terrible mage defence against a good with a good mage attack bonus. And range is too weak to defeat any good mage. Has this been proven in pvp? or is all this mage>everything stuff still being tied to duel arena experiments or pking with only the best equipment against ill prepaired opponents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHrdBnGUTX0&t=0m12s YouTube is your friend. Plenty of people getting kills with SoA. May I recommend you check out Rhylek0's channel?

Protect item prayers, not protection from melee/mage/range Wait what, the update says " (protect prayers and curses cannot be used within the Crucible)"? Did they actually mess that up? Yes. Yes they did...

The Surpreme weapons are kind of weak... 21 mage attack and +15% Magic Strength on the staff... lol the special abilities better make up for it.

No So everyone'll use Korasi's and Soul Split... Joy. I was thinking everyone would use SoA in ganodermic armor :P
